I've heard wonderful things about the Spiel show: can you guys give us a general summary, and what the focus of the show is (CCGs, board games, RPGs, toys, etc., etc.)?

Hi,

Spiel has a floorspace roughly 6 times the dealers hall at Gencon Indy.

The attendance is roughly 150,000 (roughly 5 times Indy).

The Germans love games - families play. Its a national hobby.

The main focus is boardgames. I would say roughly 3 or 4 of the halls are devoted to them.

The biggest Hall (Hall 6), is devoted to "Fantasy Spiele" which covers rpgs, ccgs and larp (the Germans love larp).

There is a small hall for traditional games, such as hand-made wooden puzzles, and a couple of other halls as well.

All the major (and minor) manufacturers are there to launch new stuff.

Its a blast, tho it is very tiring to walk round, and Saturday tends to be packed.

It depends a bit on your interests. I only go for the rpg part to find some nice deals to complete some collections. And from that point of view Malc's booth is pretty much the only one left carrying older stuff.

I feel the rpg content has decreased a lot over the years and the larp part has won a lot of space.

Last year Hollistic/Red Brick didn't have a booth anymore. They have been at Spiel for years promoting Fading Suns. Privateer Press didn't even have a booth if I'm not mistaking. There was one huge booth of a german store that has english rpg books but the prices weren't very interesting. They used to have deals to buy 3 books and get the cheapest one for free but that wasn't the case last year. Other than that I think there was a booth with some dutch guys that sold some 3.0/3.5 rpg material.

So personally my highlight is Malc's booth where I find lots of goodies every year.

Malc, do you by any chance have an inventory online somewhere ?

I'm able to attend only on sunday so I guess the nice goodies will be long gone by then

However, I do have the largest amount of stock I've ever had - even had to hire another storage unit for it here.

Yes, larp is definitely picking up. The other big show in Koln is mainly an odd mixture of larp and computers

Hiya,

what I did notice is that Hall 6 is full of stalls again this year.

Last year part of it was sectioned off and empty, as they did not have enough traders, but this year it is full to the back again

BTW, If you are looking for anything in particular Ralph, lmk, and I'll put it aside for you if I have it.

Yeah, rpg content does vary quite a bit. It really depends which traders turn up...

if you do, book early, as the hotels fill out

You should be able to bucket-flight into Frankfurt or Dusseldorf, and come from there.

Hiya,

another record year for RPGs at Spiel 10

Big crowds at the venue - they even had to get police crowd control on the first day!

Great to meet Ralph and have a chat!

First day was the busiest - I guess quite a lot of the collectors turned up then. D&D sales down a little, I thought, but WW held its end up well. Only disappointment was Cthulhu - we've never had much of a large selection there, but this year we did but it wasn't popular.

I thought there was a bit more second hand in the hall this year. Several dealers had a couple of boxes, and some had half a dozen crates.

3rd edition was still being dumped, but not in quite such large amounts this time.

3.5 sold well again, as expected.

I didn't pick much up, the DMs wooden box for 15 euros, some of the funny phb handbook boxes for a euro each, an OCE set with all the extra books, and looked at an early german rpg from 1979, but eventually decided not to take it

Well had I brought more money, I would have helped you boost the Cthulhu sales a bit more Malc.

Unfortunately the Pagan stuff pretty much killed my wallet haha.

But it was very nice chatting with you. I won't be able to make it to Dragonmeet it seems. I'm already supposed to be in Paris on sunday so that would be a bit crazy.

There was indeed some more second hand stuff available so I hope that turns into a positive trend for upcoming years.

A bunch of my friends that went still think it's less and less interesting to go for rpg's. I'm not quite sure what they're looking for though. I'm guessing they want to return to the time where there were several of 'Malc's booths'

Anyway, for me it was definately worth it heading over there. I always find nice stuff. But I'll try to get there on thursday next year as well. (And bring more money)
