Most of you know this iconic drawing by Trampier in the 1st edition Dungeon Masters Guide

Thanks to a comment by pseckler13 http://batintheattic.blogspot.com  I learned that the city scape behind Emirikol is actually a real place the Street of knights in Rhodes.

Image

Inspired by this I fired up Google Earth I did a little digging as to where he was riding too.

Larger image is here http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mFjy4EWzmtg/TJQVRqFUdFI/AAAAAAAABDA/r-gas4kl8ak/s1600/emirikol+ride.jpg.

The crude X is roughly where the viewpoint of Trampier's picture is located.

A short distance behind the viewer of the ride is a small enclosed plaza ( I am sure there some technical term for it). It has a roof and archway all around it from what I can tell. It looks large so I don't think that would be a problem.

Until he stopped death raying his pursuers and turned around.

Looks like he riding right into the courtyard in front of the main castle. If he lucky (and skilled enough) he may be able to get out by a road going to the right of the enclosed plaza but given the breakneck speed suggested by the drawing and the fact he just 10 feet or so from entering said plaza that probably unlikely.

So into the main courtyard where the guards undoubtedly wait. If was in the Majestic Wilderlands they would have Knight Killer Crossbows as well.

Well Emirikol it was nice knowing you.

Nice. I've been there twice. I remember the first door on the left as being the house of the Italian Consul in Rhodes.

Nope, an avid D&D 4e player who hangs out on The RPG Site.

This is pseckler, AKA Abyssal Maw  reply

Someone mentioned it to me and I did a bunch of google searches until I found some other mentions and then..actual pictures just like you.

I found this over on Circus Maximus

I think this is a case of the many eyes of the Internet.

Did you happen to recognize the street as the Emirikol picture?

Since we had been to old town part of Rhodes several years back, I had been wondering if that was the location Trampier was using as a reference. Thanks for pointing it out! The Palace of the Masters, which is in the old town area, is also a really cool place. The whole old town area is pretty amazing. Too bad there's no Colossus of Rhodes anywhere to be seen  :)

No, I didn't at the time. My visual memory for image isn't very good.
