I am not sure if I have seen them that way. But I am in no way a 2nd ed. expert. I am sure some of our members who have been tainted by the blight that is 2nd ed. will have the answer.

Another quick question on the same topic then - what did these books contain?

I've read the Encyclopedia Magica contained all magic items from ~78, Dragon and Dungeon, 1E, 2E etc. up to ~95.  Can anyone confirm, and correct me on the years and what was referenced?  e.g. does it include the items from the Book of Artifacts?

With the Spell Compendiums - did they aim to cover the same time period and sources?  Did they contain all spells from Tome of Magic, any other hardbacks or campaign settings etc.?

Just wondering what the definitive source for items and spells is for 2E - should I get a copy of these, and forego the Tome of Magic and Book of Artifacts?  More from a playability/completeness point of view, obviously I'm not "collecting" Tome of Magic or the Book of Artifacts

Never did happen for the Wizard and Priest Spell compendiums.  The reprints of the Encyclopedia Magicas was also in a much cheaper format, only the first printings are in the faux leather. The story for years has been that the faux leather books were so expensive to make, that even at the cost of $25 each TSR LOST money on every book they printed (one of the horrible business decisions that eventually led to the sale to WOTC and the ousting of Lorraine).

Actually there was at least 2 printings of the Encyclopedia Magica in Faux Leather ( I have them both) and one or more in the paper covers

I picked up volume 2 for $12.48 at Origins.  Chimera Hobby Shop had several copies they were selling for half price (original book price).

Come across a set but vol 4 is the revised logo, all others the orginal logo.  Says it's a first printing.  Was vol 4 ever printed with the original, making the full set consistent spines...?

Never noticed that before, but I would think the answer is no.  If the product line logo changed at that point in 1995, then it seems likely they'd choose a consistent line logo over a consistent book set logo.
