Anyone on this forum played the new 4th edition D&D yet? What are your opinions, and could you help me understand how it differs from previous editions?

Anyone trying to collect 4th edition? I realize that print runs are so large now that is is doubtful that anything released by WoTC for 4th edition will ever be valuable (with the possible exception of the Hommlet module). What are your thoughts on the quality of the materials being released?

Production quality is good. Think of it as a tactical fantasy wargame and not Dungeons & Dragons and you will enjoy it more.

Hommlet prices are very flexable. Ive owned four copies, never paid more than $30 and sold them from $40-50 (keeping this last one so that I can give it a try).

Will let you know how it runs when Ive gotten through the rulebooks (but they are on Players Handbook 3 and DMs guide 2 as core rulebooks, dont know what the hell that is about just yet.

Hmmm, well I heard the same thing about 3.0/3.5, though I personally haven't played since 2nd edition. We often played with miniatures, but didn't really use them in a tactical sense, with strict rules or anything of that nature. They were more to just give us and the DM a visual clue as to where we were in relation to each other and the baddies.

Glad to hear production quality is good. I may have to pick up the core books just to have a look.

Well, I had a copy, sold it, and recently bought another, which I plan to keep.

Well no doubt they are trying to sell as much material as they can, but I don't mind if the quality is good. Yea, let us know what you think when you run/play a game.

It can be fun if the folks you're playing with aren't all about incorporating every last published piece of information that's out there.  The core rules will allow for as much game play as the original AD&D big three (MM, PHB, DMG) did, just add imagination.  As Jason said above, the tactical element has been highly incorporated into the combat system so prepare yourself for using a grid and either minis or something to take their place so that you can keep track of movement (push, pull, slide, etc).

We played it, didn't care for it, went back to 3.5 and then shifted to Pathfinder.

My group likes a nice balance between tactical combat and RPing.  4th edition felt too much like, well, a video game system.

I'm approaching it as purely a tactical combat system. See how I like the feel of it with solo play.

AD&D was all I ever needed for a fantasy RPG. I scavange for homebrew, but I can run AD&D and even get people started playing just from memory.

I am actually intrigued by the tactical aspect of the game. I will pick up the books at some point.

I've posted quite a few times about my feelings on 4th Ed, so, I shan't begin anew. Suffice it to say, I love the system, and if you do a forum search on my username and posts I've made, you should get a good feel for the game. Good luck! :)

So is this the reason the 3.5 books are so outrageously expensive? I cannot believe the PHB is selling for as much as 50-70 bucks on ebay.



I was told sometime ago when I started buying up all of the 3.5 ed books before they became much too expensive that the high prices were due to high demand b/c players were revolting against 4th ed. material is becoming to World of Warcraft like.



I don't have anything 4th ed so I don't know.

But your quote actually comes from Dragonheart, "The peasants are revolting!" "They've always been revolting prince, now they're rebelling!"

4th Edition is a simple and quick and easy to learn rule set. That's what is appealing to me about it.

What I don't like about it is everything else.
     - To make a rule set simple, they had to gut everything out of 3.5... and I mean everything...
     - Wizards do not memorize spells anymore
     - The disparity between hit points, between classes, is almost nonexistent (i.e. You cannot build a fighter with a high Con and expect him to have a great number of hp's versus a wizard of the same level).
