Is there any indication of what will be included in the Gygax auction this year at Gen Con?

The Gail Gygax interview is 15 minutes in. There is no mention of the auction. If I just saved 20+ minutes of of your life and kept you from having to listen to that host rambling and apologizing for something he said in a former podcast you owe me a beer. That was just dreadful, lol.

I have a source who will know details as soon as there are any to be known. Anything I can pry loose I will share here.

Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

Bruce Carson (who co-owns the company that runs the auction) posted a while ago on the GenCon community forum that he had a preliminary list, but was otherwise sworn to silence.

I'm told that the items will be primarily gaming related, and not just Gary's old shoes or whatever (and I'm sure there would be folks who would love to buy those too, but the original concern a couple months ago was gaming vs. not).

I did not ask for more detail. Slow and steady is the best way...

I would be interested, but only if they were shoes he actually repaired himself in his basement while working as a cobbler to support his family while OD&D was born.

I heard that there won't be much in the way of original gaming IP/manuscripts, and that stuff that will be sold will be Gary's copies of otherwise standard modules, books, games, etc. Worthwhile to be sure, but not necessarily in the same realm as say the Bottle City manuscript.

I haven't been able to substantiate this, yet, however, so take it with a few grains of salt.

And thanks for listening Pipswitch: I hadn't gotten around to it yet, so I won't bother now

This just in, from the Gen Con e-mail update I received earlier today. Doesn't sound all that promising, I'm afraid.

Gygax Memorial Fund Charity Auction

A once in a lifetime event, Gen Con is hosting a special charity auction is to help raise money for the Gygax Memorial Fund in honor of the late E. Gary Gygax. Items in this auction are from Gary Gygax's own personal collection and are being donated by Gail Gygax, Gary's widow. Funds raised will help to erect a memorial in Gary's name in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, the birthplace of Gen Con.

Among the treasures being auctioned off are games from Gary's personal library and program books of Gen Con's past with Gary's signature and notes. The event will culminate with one very special item, personal to Gary.

Be sure to stop by the Auction in room 124 for details about this prestigious event. The Gygax Memorial Fund Charity Auction will take place Friday, August 6th at 6pm.

*nods*. Agreed, Allan; although I hope that scans have been retained if the annotations are (presumably) relevant to the history.

Not quite sure what people were expecting to be being auctioned off, but I guess - for some inexplicable reason in this case, given the stated goal? - they'll have to be there in person to find out.

I certainly defer to those here much more knowledgeable than I about what Gary might still have had in his possession. I had hoped that there might be some documentation of the history of the hobby -- whether module or book design notes, manuscripts, artwork, perhaps drafts of unpublished articles, or something else of that sort. To that end, the Gen Con program books certainly could be interesting, depending on the nature of the notes taken.

In any event, I will be there to see what there is to see.

Well, having been present when Gary was given back the manuscript for T1-4, I hope that is not on the auction block. He looked so genuinely happy to have it in his hands.
