Not directly D&D related, but no doubt many here are huge fans. We lost a great man today.

God damn, this is turning out to be another freaking bad year.

I grew up on Frazetta covers. He was a great artist, something I've grown to appreciate more and more as I grow older.

Is there an official announcement somewhere?

A very sad day indeed.  I remember seeing this piece of artwork in a book my dad had when I was 6 or 7 years old:

http://www.gwthomas.org/frank_frazetta_darkkingdom.jpg

This particular piece of art probably influenced how my imagination developed more than any others.  Without seeing it, I may have never picked up a D&D rulebook or read The Hobbit.  8O  For me, it embodies what D&D is all about.

The great cover of Karl Wagner's Kane novel "Dark Crusade".  I might never have picked up the excellent Kane series but for Frazetta's covers of Bloodstone, Death Angel's Shadow, Darkness Weaves, and Night Winds.

I think he earned a meager living for a long time and never realized the $$$ that his works will earn now and in the future. A nice docu on him in the Fire and Ice dvd and you can probably Netflix it. My stupid ass loaned (gave apparently) my copy away... his wife recently passed and so he probably just decided to move on.

Yes, that documentary that came with the Fire and Ice DVD was excellent.  It was a nice surprise, since I wasn't expecting it.

Frank was one of my favorite fantasy artists, as well.  :(  Sad lost.  Safe trip, Frank.

Back in the day, I made a DM screen and decorated it with Frazetta art, since he just knew how to add that fantasy flavor.

One has the feeling of lost opportunities as well as lost people.  We lived in a golden age, had we known it.

Frazetta was the artist who made fantasy paperback sales.

Dark Crusade, Death Dealer, Kane on the Crystal Sea, Night Winds....the list only grows from there.

Frazetta....Howard....Wagner

The names are linked in my mind for all time.  How many books did I read just because Frazetta's picture told me they had to be good?

I start to feel my age when all those people I looked up to as a kid start dropping like flies.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

I really share your sentiments, my 43th birthday was on May, 10 and that day Frank Frazetta died.  :x

My first inclination thinking back is that he inspired many artists. But really, as you say, he inspired an enormous number of readers.
