Hey guys, I've been gone for a bit, but I have returned. I seem to remember Drive Through RPG and perhaps one other place selling legal PDFs of TSR 1st ed material, but that all seems to have disappeared. Currently, is there any legal means to obtaining PDFs of this material (other than scanning your own)?

I think Paizo and RPGNow do PDF too, but I haven't been to look for quite some time

They were all pulled because of alleged piracy, but the real unstated reason is that WotC didn't want competition from older editions.

The Wizards of the Coast website has some pdf downloads of 1st edition modules but that's about the only place.

Hmmm, so what about the legal PDFs that Drive Through and Piazo sold? Can they be legally traded still?

Trading should be legal under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act as long as you completely remove any files you have from your possession.  That being said, it's a situation you don't want to have to explain in a court room but unless you are "trading"  with lots of people is unlikely to be an issue.

Ah well, a shame that WoC isn't making them available. I would be perfectly willing to pay a reasonable amount to download good quality PDFs of old 1st and 2nd edition material, just for the convenience of having digital copies.

When all is said and done, everything is available absolutely free, just a couple of clicks from Google. So much for their 'do no evil' policy.

WotC pulled their .pdfs about a year ago.  Here is a link to the response from DriveThruRPG.com to customers if you are interested.

There was a good deal of discussion/outrage about all this on the various DnD message boards at the time as well.
