Southsea models - wow - just wow. I'd forgotten what game stores were like. Interesting article though, this chap was leaking a grand a month just staying open!

As it goes I think I preferred it before the refit.

(And will anyone admit to going down there and offering him cash for the contents of his store room!!)

I wish him well - lord knows there are not enough bricks and mortar stores, particularly here in the UK

Difficult to describe this place - The phrase Aladins Cave could only be used if Aladin were a 30 year veteran kleptomaniac, with a phobia about clean, empty, flat, horizontal surfaces (and this includes the floor!)

The programme is about a shop expert who goes and offers advice on how to help ailing shops. One of these is Southsea models. It is a big shop but 40% filled with roleplay and GW stuff that sells and the other 60% topped up with crap. The shop expert basically tells him to have a clear out and focus on stuff that sells. So he does. Unfortunately there are no afters. Doesn't say whether the advice is good or not. It seems that the owner of the shop didn't embrace the internet too much. Imo with D & D and other roleplay I think the internet has too be the main focus of sales and this bloke didn't have it. Have a bricks and mortar shop for games and demos but not as your only POS.

He has a website (roleplaymerchant.com) which is advertised on his shopfront, but seems to be dead. The shop 'after' seemed a little like a GW clone, but if it it works to make money then hey-ho.

Malcolm - interested in knowing what he was like - I get the feeling he was more of a dedicated enthusiast than a businessman, can you shed any light, enquiring minds need to know?! (I couldn't find much on t'web - only thread involving him seemed he was a bit anti-wargamers and was scared of shoplifters in his store (unsurprisingly!))

Interesting this. I am only about 45mins from there and with the ST1 auction may be worth a visit.

I never knew he was still going, as I remember seeing his ads in the old WD and more recently in Imagine mags, so it was interesting to see the actual shop... what an utter cave of stuff though, may actually be somethings worth having a look at...

although having now seen the whole tv episode, it does now look like a generic GW shop, which may be a shame

Hi,

at Games Day you could buy as many as you liked. I got the impression it was "Please, take them away". There wasn't a queue.

I have heard thru the grapevine that Marshall really isnt into roleplaying at all, and that the shop may be a "front" to clean money from nefarious activities. TBH I know of several UK games dealers that do the same...

Given that a) all his Ebay auctions are Private, and b) the shop is still there after so many years with other games shops close by and c) I can never remember speaking to him much at Conventions (and boy, do the Dealers yack at Conventions if we have the same interests) then those theories are possible.

I can't believe there would be anything interesting cheap left, or Coug would have had it, as he lives close.

If you do visit him, you could call in on Coug and say Hello from Us All!

I think if I were to visit the Coug, I'd count my teeth as I left and probably wipe my shoes on the way out.....

I couldnt think of anything I'd rather do less than meet that no-mark!

However, with your observations on the possible southsea model shops activities, maybe I'll visit incognito

and you're right the Ctard would have picked up all the cheap items by now!

To be honest, whilst it may be a fun trip to have a look-see around, I'd have rather visited the old shop with all the old stuff knocking about.. those sort of shops just don't exist anymore and thats a shame

Feeling your pain, bet even thinking about breathing hurts....

But done that and recently recovered from a dislocated nose, which is also very painful post op...You'd be surprised how much your nose moves when you don't want it to!

Three reasons why I dont go shopping the day after Thanksgiving and never will:

1) I used to work retail and know first hand just how a normally nice person can become an evil prick in less than two seconds.
