I try to avoid smoked (cigar and cigarette) books especially if they have yellowed from it. If it is just the smell though, there is some hope that you can get that out but it takes time too.

I have an isolation box with wires across the top to hang modules on - the wires keep the books semi open. At the bottom, I have a smell absorbing substance - something in a vented container from Canadian Tire. I leave the smoked books in for months, then rotate then around a bit and wait some more. Eventually, the smoke smell is dimished or removed and I leave them out in the open to air for a while longer. Its a long process so i try to avoid it when I can.

TFM does indeed own #18, as I have some scans around here of that copy. I believe he obtained it (and others?) from Mike Kuo many years ago, if my memory serves.

What I was wondering about is whether there are copies (i.e., original copies used in play) AND original printouts off the TSR dot matrix printer. This came to mind after recalling Frank F.'s pre-pub R4:

Hard to tell, but I originally thought this looked like a dot matrix printout rather than a photocopy, but I may be wrong.

Mike had prepubs, and I myself am pretty sure tfm bought them from him.

Mentzer was the one who validated my R4 prepub. I can't recall the exact details, but I believe it was an impact printer. My copy had the feeder strips on either side.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

In fact looking at ebay D&D items - if you don't mind being ripped off and money is no object there is an insta-collection sitting on page 1 right now.

eBay listings

OB3,R1-4,RPGA3&4,Fazzlewood,POTVQ,DG,Dragon 1 any number of OD&D books,Pre-pub Falx (and oddly, a pram!)(And Jeff Grubbs Silver Anniversary set-still shrinked!)

Ten grand (£) and you're right up there in the giddy heights of the fab 5(or is it 6, or 7, or is there only one now - I can't keep up :lol:

)

PoTQ has sold for around $1,000US for the last few (except that crappy copy that sold for $225.00US) times. And the copy that (was it KingofPain?) was sold at Gencon for $1,300.00US. Granted, it was #1 of #3 of the Fonorow collection (and appeared to be near-mint as well).

Not necessarily a rip off...

I just picked up a white box with a Panzer Warfare GK logo for $38. Woodgrain boxes usually go for much more.
