I can't tell whether the pre-pub R1 is legit or not, but... If someone asks you "Is this a photocopy?", and you respond "I have several of these that look similar", expect that everyone is going to assume yours is a photocopy.

Decent BIN on that Warriors of Mars. Not bad looking at all. And as for the smoke problem....not really sure a book that smelled like pipe smoke would bother me all that much. Cigarettes....now that is a different story.

Guess it would all depend on the "flavor" of the pipe tobacco.

I had a roommate in college that smoked pipe tobacco and it made the whole house smell great. But there are oils and resin in pipe tobacco that might cause more damage to paper than other types of tobacco....not really sure.

I love the smell of 'fresh' cigarettes but stale on books is a huge no-no.

Pipe tobacco - KOP is right - definitely depnds on the flavour - though, again, it doesn't age well on books I'm afraid.

(How I miss being a smoker - good health is highly over-rated :roll:

As a former pipe smoker, I can attest to the fact that the tobaccos that smell the best while burning often have the foulest taste.

Is there a reason for covering part of the signature, or Ebay policy that restricts displaying signatures on this? Its not exactly a secret, you can find the Mentzers signature here and elsewhere.

The idea that he has more as well gives me pause. Has there been any validation of the serial number?

I was considering bidding, you know, because I want to have a better than "good" collection too

But I will hold off or pass till more info is in.

gentlemen, 1) All of the r -series prepubs are photocopies. what makes them unique are the numbered folders that they came in. 2) I would be bidding on this item, but i already have two of these (and yes they look identical) 3) TFM aka crimsonpermanentassurance has a fantastic collection of rares (witness the recent no-sale at 5500.01) and is one of the notable collectors in the hobby. perhaps the way he answered the question wasn't the best, but really that's not enough reason to question the integrity of his auction. by the way as to the numbering that chris mentioned, i have #42 of r3, and i'm quite sure it's legit, and i can only guess that the same amount were made of each, so i'm wondering why he mentioned 12 copies in his question. if you read this chris, please let us know. thank you.

I am sure its the real thing, there is no way that TFM would bring counterfits into the hobby.
This is really a good chance to own a very rare collectable.
