I'd only be interested in this if it had a column for "revitalizing D&D" and I do not mean Xeroxes.

We don't really do articles here on the forums, just discussions and many interesting discussions are lost in the normal progression of new topics. The topic discussions themselves are often rambling and disjointed and it might be worth looking over the previous threads here and collating the information for a more coherent article.

For example, over at Dragonsfoot they have the various question and answer threads from Gygax, Frank, Tim Kask, etc... and it would be interesting to see those threads boiled down to the basic questions and the full replies by the authors. For this forum I'd say we could look at many of the more interesting topics and create articles that summed up the more interesting and salient points.

I just don't see the forums as a place where people regularly write up articles on researched or creative subjects as much as a place to talk over much briefer points of interest.

What it will also need is a slush pile of non-perishable articles. Any articles of a perishable nature need to wait till all the tech details are hammered out and the framework of the newsletter is in place.

Would we want a newsletter or zine or magazine? Would we want it to be POD or have an actual (limited) printing?

I can handle the production side. That is pretty easy for me to do and I have the infrastructure in place. I don't want to commit to much beyond that, but I could help with an edit or article from time to time.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

i think it is a very cool idea, and i would certainly buy a hard copy version if one was published. however, outside of scans of items i own, or commentary on same, i don't believe i have any other way of helping...

This is exactly why I started my little Holmes Basic website, to collate/organize info buried in Discussion groups. I know some here (FormCritic, Badmike, etc) have posted some excellent product reviews in the past that could probably be revised & used in a newsletter.

An "intro to production" article would be a cool addition to such a newsletter. For collectors who wish to go beyond into producing something (like this newsletter).

I think the photos of your collection that were recently posted here could be used in some sort of "collector's showcase" type article (Mike include this above as "Pictures of member's collections"). You could also write up a summary of your collection. Not list everything, just an overview with some total numbers and prize items.

I would love to see a printed form of this sort of thing.
Have little I could contribute other than time, perhaps mail outs, or some minor proofreading.

I have done a few low level attempts at fantasy adventure module and book reviews, though they are very pedestrian when compared to many others I have read here and other places.

I could help out on the editing side, as well as articles related to miniatures.

RE: the Sage Advice name suggestion, I'd nix that one as it was the name of Skip Williams' long-running Dragon column.

Editorial rant by Jason Z (not hard to get going once you wind him up);

Definitive article on the different white box versions, with all the details and a bit of history on the white box, a good reference article you could refer if you are collector but actually readable;

Tips on keywords to use on Ebay;

Using Craigslist to find collectibles;

Product checklist and review of The Companions releases;

Product reviews of Bill's latest Pacesetter release, the new Swords & Wizardry book, and a Expeditious Press module;

1st person accounts of this year's Garycon and NTRPG con;

New auction highs of specific collectibles;

New discoveries/print versions/debate on validity of new finds;

"Items to Look For" focusing this issue on Judges Guild;

Interview with Tim Kask;

Letters to the Editor.

What do you think?  Each issue would mix this up every issue, dropping some features and adding others depending on the authors.

Just what we need, but also articles only the writers are going to think of. If this is going to be a newsletter, zine, magazine that manages to come out on a regular and timely basis then it needs articles/articles/articles there simply can't be too many. Best to be working two issues ahead, meaning that when you are ready to publish an issue you have the bulk of the material ready for the next two on hand and are gathering more to replenish. Otherwise shit happens and it starts becoming a scramble just to get the next issue out on time.

People will pull articles, people will disappear and miss turning in regular columns, articles will turn out to need editing and re-editing and then implode like an aluminum can with the air sucked out of it. And all these things will need to be replaced from articles being prepared for the next issue, which will then need articles to replace those... wheeee!

Seriously, the main ingredient to something like this are articles. So everyone interested, start thinking or writing. I am noting down interesting things Mike has said to work on. As soon as someone has an idea they are going to start with, post it here or send it to me. If anyone feels like they would like to be an editor on this or would rather have an editorial committee post it here and we can work it out. I just want to see this get started and actually done, if it can be done.

But, like I've said, the main thing isn't editors or tech, it's material. If you have the material then forming it into a newsletter, zine or magazine is just about organization and determination. Without the material to work with there is nothing to edit or organize or print.

Well, we could start out with a surfeit of material if, say, authors of prior material agreed to have it "reprinted" in the mag.  For example, both Jason and Mark  have some pretty good reviews up for old school materials (here and on Dragonsfoot), if they would agree  to have them reprinted in the Acaeum Journal that takes care of reviews for awhile.  I'm willing to let the mag reprint any reviews I've done here (not a lot but a few) as long as I'm given the chance to "clean them up" a bit as I believe they were done several years ago.  Anyone else willing to take a series of their posts, collate it, and clean it up a bit could do the same thing.  Article writing is not as hard to do as you thought, then, is it?   :wink:

But Jason is correct that material is the key, which is why monthly magazines are so tough to keep going (and why quarterly is probably the best we could do).  Having a lot of articles in the can is the secret to a good publication like this. Anyway I'll check out my reviews, clean them up a bit and send them off to you Jason, in the hopes they can be used in the future.

Excellent!  I will look over some of the reviews I did of the DCC line. I could call it;

Dungeon Crawl Classics a review of the first twelve modules or This One Goes to 11

from the collector perspective ongoing articles could be:
1) 5 coolest things in my collection or
2) 5 best bargains i ever got. or something else like this. they'd have the advantage of brevity (maybe 5 acaeum collectors could be highlighted each issue but not much space would be consumed) and could represent different strata of collecting.

maybe print the games/characters found in stuff we buy.. the unknown gems that people have spent hours making for their own games..

I think that stuff is interesting and left in its raw state..

I can think of a thing or 2 to contribute..

Nice idea Brette.

I am certainly going to try to contribute. There are so many good ideas in the thread which Mike has summarised on the previous page (5).

I am happy to be on the editorial committee as well and will help as I can to bring #1 into reality.

Jason's advice is right though. At this stage it is write, write, write!

I can probably help out with various bits of material. I have reviews. I could summarize some of my already-available MERP or CarWars info. I'm working on some Stormbringer info that might be relevant.

I know I enjoy reading about other peoples' collections: How they store it (types of bags, containers, climate control, etc.), what they have, pictures of wall-length bookshelves, that sort of thing. Brief interviews with some of the prominent collectors would be fun. Hell, I'd be happy to write a short article about my own collection in this regard, but my collection is nowhere near as impressive as the collections of many of the people here. (Only about 12 feet of shelf space, tightly packed.)

I also have some publishing experience, and so I may be able to help out with the logistics of the production.

It may have been mentioned upthread, but I'd suggest limiting the amount of republished stuff each newsletter contains (such as reviews already published elsewhere), mostly for practical publishing reasons. Keep a reserve of stuff that's already ready-to-go in your back pocket to help make up for time periods when it's harder to generate new material.

Would there be any interest in presenting a section on minis? Either painting, pictures, collectables? Might be a small section to run perhaps?

Definitely. Minis are a decent part of the discussion here (just check out the recent fun finds with the gamma world blisters or even brand new minis and paintwork such as center stage).

I think any aspect of RPG collecting even some branching into wargaming or board games since some, like Hero Quest, Warhammer Quest, Divine Right, Snit's etc... certainly cross between RPGs and war/board gaming.

There are the games themselves, the hunt for them, the finds, the collections and the collectors, storage, quality (because a good module in play and production certainly affects its demand and collectability).

Then there is artwork and the artists. The history of the publishers and the people who made the games.

There is a vast amount of possible material out there. Do not hesitate to start on a topic. Even if you are working on an idea please pm either hermit or me so we can make note of it.

It will require a good deal of material before the first issue can be released and right now we are just starting with ideas, but if you have an idea and are starting on it please let us know. If anyone wants to help out on the editing or production side, we can start immediately with the planning and shaping of what the newsletter can be.
