Very nice map. As stated, a real gem in a collection. For how much it sold?

Yes, it's the original frame. According to the framer's stamp on the back, it was done in 1963 (a couple of years after the piece was commissioned for and published in Amra, vol. 2, issue 15 or 18, can't recall off the top of my head). I'm not in love with the framing job, but I figure it's part of the history and provenance, so I'm not going to mess with it. It was drawn in black and colored inks by Jim Cawthorn, who was a UK fan, comic, and cover artist (who incidentally passed away recently also), based on the first map of Nehwon ever drawn, by Mrs. Harry Otto Fischer (whose first name I don't remember) in the '30s.

According to Fritz Leiber in issue #1 of The Dragon, it is more or less true to his conception of Nehwon, but more accurate in the southern and western portions than in the northern. A close reading of some of the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories will net you a few locations that do not appear on this map, but which are large enough that they should definitely be there (the Rift Valley, for instance).

It's good to know others out there appreciate it. My introduction to Fantasy was through Tolkien, but since coming across Leiber a few years later he has been my favorite fantasy author by far, though he's one of my least favorite science fiction authors.. Go figure.

Most of my friends locally who visit look up at it and say something along the lines of, "What the heck is that," and their eyes glaze over in boredom as I explain.

Somewhere around $340, I think, though I was highly motivated and my high bid was a multiple of that. I knew I was looking at a once in a lifetime opportunity, so the war chest got busted open. I was pleased and surprised that it went for so little.

Here's my extraordinary collection...

I'm most proud about the 2nd Alpha DMG and the 3rd print Woodgrain (I bought 'em a few weeks back on eBay), but I secretly love the mini-books (I bought most of them back when they came out on vacation in St. Thomas USVI, of all places!) and the little chest (contains dice) I used back in the day. I used to 'roll' important throws as a DM in there; don't ask me why. The rest of the stuff I've had since forever or bought on eBay also.

I have a set of really beat-up manuals I keep at home to read every once in a while. All this other stuff is in my office (the wife...you know how it is...). I use vaccum Ziplocks for some, specially older, stuff. I try to keep other stuff in baggies also. Maybe it's the Adrian Monk in me.

True that. Once I thought some more, I remembered that I had imbibed what most would consider an unhealthily excessive quantity of good Tequila. Add midsummer heat, and stir... and you get the "look", LOL.

Nice start on reviving the collection! Having never owned a woodgrain, I never realized how much smaller the boxes are than the those for the "whitebox" editions. Cool.

Downstairs bookcases first

Upstairs to the GAME ROOM.

The CSIO Map is under a clear plastic sheet (About 1/16th inch thick) and under the CSIO Map is a HUGE hex map for when we are not gaming in the City State.

Tower of the Wizard King... The grandkids and I LOVE That Game! Which is why I have Three Copies of it...

Harpies anyone?

Sports stuff may not belong, but the bottom two shelves in the glass cabinet is Sci Fi (Star Trek and Star Wars Stuff mostly)
Note the six pack of Romulan Ale....
I have two other Sports Cabinets as well, and a closet filled with sports cards and sports memorabilia (Almost all Pro Football)

I have another 16 Boxes filled with stuff not shown (in addition to the 12 boxes in the pictures above).
Most of that stuff is in my office, which is a horrid place to even walk into, so I aint showing pictures of it.

the acaeum texas mafia is making a nice showing! i'd like to see some u.k. (i'm looking at you malc and david-and our other fine brethren from across the pond) and canadian (jeff, mark etc.) and aussie friends show their collections off. it's fun to see things we are not used to seeing.

OK, this isn't my collection at all. Stratochamp is, as some may know, a bit challenged by technology. So he asked me to take some pictures of his collection, upload them and post here. I stopped by his place last week after a local game store auction, managed to obtain the standard required security clearance, and here's what I got.

It should be noted that there really aren't any doubles in these shelves. Where there are multiples of something, it's usually because they have some sort of different provenance (e.g., a TSR employee's copy).

I have seen Bill's collection up close and it is truely a thing of beauty. So many perfect items.

1st print Brown Box that looks just off the shelf. 1st chainmail that is perfect. Unique items, historial items. So complete and so nice.
