Looks great! Please tell me that will be available at some point to people who can't attend the con. Will it be available through your other subscription programs?

Or to attend NTRPG con yourself...part of the point of these limited editions is to get collectors all sweaty and crazy thinking there is stuff out there they aren't going to get unless they attend.

And I don't think anyone else is going to be either.

While I would love to attend all the cons, I think we all know that time and money are precious commodities lately. However, if I can support these functions by purchasing whatever goods may be available then everybody wins.

So I will just throw this out there. If anyone is willing to pick up a copy of Bill's module or other items at the con for me, then I would be glad to do the same for you when I attend Gen Con this year.

Please PM me if you would like to work something out. Thanks.

Nothing official about my guess (of course)  But I would not be at all surprised if there are over 100 paid attendees this year.
Not all will be there the entire stretch, but most will.
I think you should be able to find someone willy to help you out there.

The drawback with a publication like this is that it breaks the customer/publisher chain.  Snap!  Broken.

If there is an edition of a Pacesetter module only available at NTRPGCon, it automatically and permanently makes my Pacesetter collection incomplete.

As a loyal Pacesetter purchaser from the beginning, my reaction to this publication is considerable chagrin both for myself and for Pacesetter.  :|

I am working on a fix. I have to admit that I have received more than a few emails regarding this. (thanks to everyone!).
I will be sending out "fix" directly to our CLP members. This way, those who are loyal customers and run the complete collection, will have an opportunity to purchase this module in the convention format. It will be a strict order system with a fairly tight buying deadline. This will be a very limited release.

OMG>...  :?  Are you serious?!

Sorry I do not feel that your lack of completion for your Pacesetter collection is reason enough for Pacesetter NOT to publish convention only modules.
And even if you cannot go to Dallas for this convention, I do not believe you could not eventually get a copy of it anyway through a post Convention sale.

While I feel your pain, I don't know why any normal DCC collector would not feel the same.
Just speaking of the 3.x edition...
DCC 3.5, DCC, 30, DCC 17.5...
And I know there are many other DCC modules that are specific tourney only modules, some were mostly just variant covers, others were not.
Those were All tournament only publications and if you want a copy of any of them be prepared to pay through your wallet and bank account.
That is IF you can even ever find them...

TSR collectors too have the same troubles with MANY rare modules only published for Tourneys.

I will likely never be able to complete either of those collections for the very same reasons you just stated.

Trivia question for those who might know...
In what years has GenCon NOT featured tourney only items?
I think I can actually answer that one...
My guess would be Freaking NEVER!

In fact, I would be willing to bet a nickel that a vast majority of all Fantasy RPG related conventions offer the same sorts of Tourney only items.
And no, I am not just talking about posters, Mugs and Pins ...
I would bet another 5 cent piece that nearly ALL games publishers have at one time (more probably MANY times) published tourney only modules and games too.
Regular limited edition MODULES and Programs and Tourney Modules too are common enticements for attending Conventions.
It is a vital part of the fun in GOING to that specific Convention IMO.

While I will never likely go to any GENCON, I can and will go to every NTCon I can as long as Doug and Mike continue to host them.
And if a few tourney only items are available there, then I am happily going to snap them up and hold onto them proudly.

I too am chagrined.... At GENCON, and probably almost any other... blah blah Con too, and at Goodman Games, TSR, and just about every other publisher and Convention that has ever published limited versions of modules.
Most of those being Tourney only modules.

It is of course up to Bill whether he will give in to pressure from his fans to never offer up limited tourney only items.
But I seriously doubt any true fan of his publications would stop collecting his mainstream publications just because of a few Tourney only modules being tough to find copies of.
What about the current and future fans that are not going to be part of his Customer Loyalty Program?
Should he reprint those modules larger numbers too?

I did not want to copy that entire post!

While I really understand what you are saying, we really cannot compare NTX to Gen Con or most other large RPG cons. And as much as I would love to be compared to Goodman, I am speck in the wind compared to their publications.

What I have to balance is that I do print every module in a limited initial run and many of my purchasers are collectors - and very loyal at that.

And remember, the digest modules from last year's NTX were available to anyone, too.

I have not decided how I will make a very limited amount of these modules available to my most loyal purchasers. It is very important to know that not everyone is going to want one.

Also, there will be no after the conventiion blow out on remaining stock. I am only going to produce a set number of these things. Less than a regular initial print run of any of my modules. Any remianing copies will only be available for purchase at conventions that I actually attend. They will not be available through the web site after NTX.

I am still working on how, or if, I will do this.

You are right of course and I had no thoughts to compare NTCON with GENCON in the general way.
I realise that would be a rediculous comparison.

Did not know the names of any small conventions that are still going each year.
Obviously Many regions in the USA have one or two conventions close enough to drive to each year, much like the NTRPGCon.
Probably someone here might be able to name dozens of those, but not me.

I do understand Form Critics frustration, and your reasoning for doing whatever makes your customers happy.
Survival in that market has to be hard no matter how large or small your specific venture might be.

Thank you for your explantion.
(BTW: what I meant by Post Convention Sale was via e-Bay or private sale from an attendee of the Convention)
Knowing your print runs normally in low 100's for regular modules keeps it more in perspective.
Those numbers are lower than even the most rare TSR Tourney Modules.

1) Yes - Consider the implications of the words, "Customer Loyalty Program."

2) I said I was chagrined...not throwing a tantrum or walking away.

3) Consider the implications of the words, "pressure from his fans."

3) I'm cheering for Pacesetter.  Bill should make as many sales as possible.

4) Yes - Goodman's convention modules also annoy me.

5) I live a long way from Texas or Indiana.  :D

Right... and if the convention weren't in your back yard, you'd feel the same way?  Hard to believe.

And in none of the other examples cited is the publisher a prominent acaeum member, who hopefully would want to take care of his prime audience.

I agree with FormCritic's thoughts regarding the CLP.  Bill added a program whereby I get to buy all his stuff and get a year end bonus... but that reasonably could/should cut both ways, and not have items I need to work even more for.

That being said, I've never really liked convention/exclusive items in anything I collect.  If you want to put out an exclusive edition and then follow up with a general printing, that's fine by me, but having items available only at a convention and then vanish leaves me cold.

I understand convention exclusives from the convetions point of view (to an extent) but I really don't see what is in it for the company. It doesn't matter who it is but if you have 200 customers for an item and say to 100 of them, sorry but I'm going to make this impossible for you to collect, it just leaves me a bit dazed.

Honestly I'm jealous as hell at everyone who can go to Northtexas because it is an amazing convention. It is amazing without convention exclusives. The games, the special guests...

But the more I hear about people or companies specificly designing material so that it is only available at the convention... well it doesn't make me happy. So if I am a customer I have to wonder why a someone in business is going out of their way to make a portion of their customer base unhappy.

That's just my opinion. Maybe it doesn't matter or maybe it really boosts sales, but I don't see it and it doesn't make sense to me.

So?  From my observations, a large majority of Gen Con attendees are of the typical impoverished gamer stereotype.  They save their pennies all year just so they can attend the convention, buy a few new releases, and play games and spend time with their friends from past conventions.  Using the "I live too far away" is a poor excuse not to go.  Having no job and living in a van down by the river is only marginally acceptable.

TheHistorian wrote:Right... and if the convention weren't in your back yard, you'd feel the same way? Hard to believe.

I don't have a clue how Gnat really feels, but I'm not going to sit here and say that if Bill decided to go to FartCon and print up 20 or so copies of an adventure he was DM'ing for convention goers and sell a few (that he didnt give to the people in the tournament) as convention exclusives, that I would be pissed off about it.  I didnt get all upset when I didnt get a copy of DCC #3.5 or the 1st edition DCC #12.5 (or whatever it was) that they released at Gen Con several years back.  Same with the exclusive Dune: Chronicles of the Imperium book from Last Unicorn.  Sure I would love to have them both but I'm not going to start giving Joe Goodman or another publisher crap for not printing up more copies for everyone to have.  If I could get everything I wanted, whenever I wanted it, I honestly dont think collecting would be all that fun.

I just hope Bill doesnt wilt under the pressure to make everyone happy and call it quits one of these days.  :(

I really am sorry that I used the phrase "pressure from his fans."
A truly unfortunate choice of words and not deserving of either of you.
I wish to offer Pacesetter (Bill) and Form Critic my apologies if you'll have them.

IIRC (Bill please correct me if I am wrong) Pacesetter's 1st print runs of new modules normally go to just 150 copies.
Once those sell out, Pacesetter would perhaps print another run of that module as 2nd prints, and perhaps even a 3rd print at some point too.
That said, EVERY Pacesetter module is a limited edition print to begin with.

I have no idea how many folks are signed onto Pacesetter's Customer Loyalty Program, but I would guess that the module recently sold under the Customer Loyalty Program was an even shorter print run and an even more limited edition, deservedly so.

Never said I liked Convention exclusive anything, but I will now.
The 3 year old North Texas Convention is the ONLY RPG Convention I have ever attended and as such I have never been able to get first hand copies of any items exclusive to any Convention, except at NTPRGCon.
And to be perfectly honest, I like the exclusive items I have obtained so far from the convention and I would buy them again.

Earlier in this thread I was trying (obviously failing) to show that the idea of Convention exclusive prints of modules (and other items) is far from a new idea...

But I would continue to buy Pacesetter products if there were only 25 (if I could) or 25,000 of them in print.

I have been to lots of Conventions and I like the exclusives.  Gives some incentive (and reward sometimes) to go. :)
