"Big Bang Theory" was great for the first season or two.

I was stunned by how well the writers mixed very accurate science with those characters and their foibles, especially in the conflict between Sheldon and Penny.

Since then, the writers have shifted gears and gone into "sitcom" mode, over explaining anything technical and relying on verbal slapstick.

Now, "Modern Family" is a different story.
That show is a freakin riot!

Hi,

have to admit, I do love the BB Theory, even the later series - tho thats probably because I can ifentify with the Amy character :roll:

Arrested Development - watched a couple of episodes, never even raised a smile.

Used to love WKRP and MASH, but they arent good to watch now. Definitely of their time.

Do the "newer" Uk comedies get airing in the USA? Things like:
the Inbetweeners (puerile but incredibly funny)
gavin & stacey
fresh meat
peep show
the league of gentlemen

I am from Canada so the above gun related conversation sounds like a foreign language.
I do not own and have never owned any firearms.
Of all my friends and family I can only think of three of them that even own a firearm and amongst them none own handguns.
Nobody carries guns except police and criminals.
In the province of Newfoundland the police did not even start wearing handguns until 1998.

You just don't know gun owning Canadians then. Canada certainly owns guns at almost than one third the rate of the US, but it's still over 1 in 4 canadians that owns a gun. Most of the time I'm certain it's a rifle and not a handgun, to be sure. But gun ownership in Canada is by no means a foreign thing.

Not for me here in Delaware. I haven't even heard of any of these shows except for the League of Gentlemen (and I've never seen an episode).

Carroll O'Connor really nailed it with All in the Family. Definitely a sitcom I could still watch today and appreciate.

And a sitcom you couldn't make now. The PC police would have it cancelled by Episode 2. I'll always believe it was one of the most important TV shows in american history, in that it put a mirror in front of a lot of our unspoken prejudices and thoughts in the guise of the bigoted Archie at a time of the 70s when pretty much everything the show covered was simply left unspoken in most households unless you wanted a fistfight over the dinner table. I knew plenty of "Archie Bunkers" even growing up in suburban Texas in the 70s. While it was definitely satirizing the typical middle class WASP family (and especially ignorant bigots), few people realize it made just as much fun of the liberal side of things as Rob Riener's Michael ends up looking stupid at least as much as Archie---the show pretty much plays it right down the middle in the Archie vs Meathead arguments. The funniest episodes are the ones where Archie has a good foil, like Bea Arthur's Maude (who was Edith's cousin) or the ever vocal George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley). If you have never seen this show, and have to watch one episode, watch the Sammy Davis Jr. episode. From Davis' underplayed acting confronted with the highly prejudiced Archie, to Connor playing Archie's utter cluelessness at the remarks he makes to Davis, to the very famous last scene (where Sammy kisses the shocked Archie on the cheek and the stuido audience goes beserk at Carroll O'Connor's expression), this is about as good as it gets in american comedy TV.

And No, you couldnt make it nowadays.

Yes, and from what I understand, it was toned DOWN from the original version. Have you seen any All in the Family episodes so that you could compare them? If so what did you think?

no, I havent.

I do know that Till Death doesnt get repeated tho, apart from certain carefully chosen episodes. The language is no longer politically acceptable (n8gger poofs etc)

Check out the Inbetweeners if you can. hysterically funny at times.

Yep that sounds much worse

Although Archie talked about those topics, and that's probably how he was thinking about it in his head, it was definitely toned down for TV.

I'll have to try to see if I can catch an episode of the InBetweeners. Some British comedy leaves me cold, some of it is a laugh riot.

South Park - An American classic. (I suppose it must have been based on a British series?)

Everyone gets skewered. Liberal crap gets skewered more often because it's more funny. But, basically, if you watch the show it's your own fault.

There is a South Park episode that satires and basically flattens Family Guy....which is to South Park as ogre is to storm giant. (Smaller, weaker, stinkier and less intelligent.)
