Yes, wikipedia has issues.  Yet, it is freely available and much of the information is both accurate and useful.  An educated user or scholar will simply use it as one would a published book, carefully.  Most books are not peer reviewed and are no more scholarly, and in many cases less so than the wikipedia entry.

The entry on internet trolls can be found here.  It is thorough and includes footnotes.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)

I provided a quote from the leading authority on the subject.  Judith Donath is currently an Assistant Professor at MIT.  http://smg.media.mit.edu/people/Judith/

You can confirm the accuracy of the quote on Wikipedia that I used by go to her profile at MIT's website and downloading the following pdf.

Identity and Deception in the Virtual Community (or .pdf)
Judith Donath. 1998. In Communities in Cyberspace. (M. Smith and P. Kollock, eds.) London: Routledge.

You may note that that note on the quote I provided is present in wikipedia and correctly identifies it source.  The overall entry is consistent with academic thought on the matter.  It is not one of the silly fan driven entries that proliferate...  as the footnotes can be examined to demonstrate.

So, what we have here, is yet again, posters to this forum jumping to conclusions and stating assertions without doing even basic fact checking. Wikipedia is a useful resource that requires fact checking, as do all non primary sources.

Oddly, the half handed personal attack suggesting that only uneducated people would use wikipedia was misdirected.  No matter the level of one's education, the quality of the writing, the thought process and the quality of the research are core values to academic communities.  Degrees do not remedy bad writing, poorly defended conclusions and inattention to detail and fact checking.

"Shouting" on the internet, making base accusations, failing to check the sources of an argument you wish to discredit, challenging the education level of someone you don't know and referencing trolls... and burning marshmellows..." makes the intent of your post clear.  And, although you may not be primarily a troll, you certainly have engaged in a trolling post.

As for your quote from wikipedia....  please note the reference to "unchecked information".  The problem is not that all entries are bad, it is that uneducated or lazy users do not independently check sources and facts.  Too bad for them.  You did not bother to read the disclaimer carefully, or to check your facts.  I did both.

I do believe that this is a D&D community of prolific collectors, accurate researches and a class of people who have a true love for the game. I, along with many here, have actually contributed to this site in both research and information gathering as it pertains to collecting, cataloging D&D related material and pricing analysis.

You have not.

I do believe that Dragonsfoot is the best venue for your diatribe though, they love peeps like you

Ok, I know I was going to let it lie, but its nice to know I'm not alone in thinking that.

However, at the risk of a further length of prose with numerous snide comments and being condescending to all and sundry and expecting everyone to agree with his comments due to the sheer size of his ego, I think it really is time for pip to drop it and contribute rather than arguing every other goddamn post...

Apologies for OT... Back to Troll and Toad postage costs.

Sounds like they do re-imburse generally then, but have the goods been any good?

I've always been put off by their disclaimer about 'the box may or may not be complete, broken, soiled, on fire...'

For the more rare items, the prices do seem to start very high, or is that me?

Kosh, Pipswitch has apologised, and I belive he was sincere.

Dragonsfoot - It's sometimes hard to have a sensible discussion over there, and the mean literacy level is a little lower, and the experience and awareness if things has too wide a range to keep a sencible discussion going for long.

GenCon Auctions - I may be blissfully ignorant of what really goes on, but I has always assumed Frank did the GenCon Auctions completely for free and because he was just that kinda guy. It never occurred to me that he might be ,making a profit out of the venture, and I'm happy to believe that he did not, and believed in offering his services for free out of a willingness to be charitable and a sence of wanting to contribute to the community and society that, let's face it' he helped build from those early years.

That is why, when T&T step and reportedly charge, and all of a sudden 80% of the product is tat, 40% of the product shouldn't even be there, and some of it is being mis-sold; I have to ask what political motivations and if financial insentives were given to get to that point.

Now if Frank says it was always that way, and the auctioneer always makes money out of it, so be it. I just always assumed it was purely a voluntary bringing together of people for charity. Maybe it is me that is naive and 'voluntary' and 'charitable' mean different things in different cultures.

If you are talking about anything that is in used shape from Troll and Toad then assume it is 2 or 3 ratings lower than anyone else would grade it.

It has been mentioned already once that even with their rare items such as a Wee Warriors item that they don't bother to check things like completeness.  Blackmoor's example is the second I have heard about a Wee Warriors item being no where near the condition it is advertised in.  The other case was one where all the maps were missing.

In cases like this they accept the return but then it just goes back up for sale without ever changing the listing so they wait and hope the next buyer doesn't know any better.

As for prices.  Yes, their prices are high - generally double or triple would you might expect to get one for on Ebay.

Im going to go out on a limb and say that there was more involved here. If you are suggesting that an expert gets 100 times the sale price I think that is a pile of you know what. Any difference between someone who is an expert and someone marginally competent would be negligible.

Maybe Frank (or some older veteran of the games type of guy) brings along more credibility which might account for beter sales/bids/items in the auction... I know that I'd probably attend a function if it had that "aura" or whatever that the old guard brings to it. I agree with your math though Mars :)

Since this thread is theoretically about T&T shipping charges (mostly for eBay it seems), I won't perpetuate this GenCon Auction sub-thread.

That "sub-thread" is the best thing happening with this thread though

And, I don't like seeing anyone else (or any business) treated miserably on the site.  It is unseemly and it harms the growth of our hobby.

The problem is that there are some shitbag sellers that pose as "businesses". Plenty of these "businesses" have a sort of "fuck you" attitude towards our hobby and this has been more detrimental than anything I can think of really. Have you ever read some of the crap that Tanya King or whoever she is wrote? There needs to be some accountability when a seller has her kind of "Tude". We care about the hobby but a lot of sellers could give a fuck less about the hobby (as long as they get paid). You cannot make the mistake (I think) of thinking that a seller has some motivation beyond making money to interact with you or me. So, the "business" has some obligations and when they fuck you over it's in everyones best interest to "out them". Then it gets hairy of course because maybe the accusations are malicious and whatnot. More often than not, where there's smoke there's fire (from my own experience) reading these threads.
What I quoted above is problematic (in a vacuum) because it gives the indication that you're on the wrong side of the fence, (what if some idiot comes along and rips everyone off and Pip doesn't want anyone to be "attacked" is how you make it sound?) It just doesn't read correctly. I think you mean something else though. The trouble is that you're rules lawyering and then when you do that you're setting up your own standards. added: and you have to abide by your own standards as well as the community standards to some degree. You have to be "ELEGANT" which is extremely difficult and nobody here is capable imo.

Oh yeah!

Trolling. The biggest surefire sign of a troll is somebody who comes off as being some kind of "authority" "moral authority" and setting the standards. This is universal of every forum. Of course huge post counts and whatnot but when people start to "make" or "change some rules" is when you best identify "trolls". I think that there are currently 0 "trolls" on this forum.
That being said...
In the Army we had what were called "shithouse lawyers". The shithouse lawyer was basically someone who would tell you whats up and give you advice while you're sitting there taking a crap (and thus a captive audience).
There are some shithouse lawyer types on The Acaeum forum imo

I was reading through this thread and couldn't help but post my thoughts on the T&T auction.  Hope i don't piss anyone off, i couldn't make it out there and i don't know if anything shady happened.  Just some queries/thoughts based on what i've read.  Maybe i've misunderstood, and someone can correct me.

From what i've read T&T was running the auction and bidding on the items being sold.  They also receive 10-20%, roughly, of the sale price.

Now, my thoughts on auction houses bidding on their own auctioned items aside, does anyone else feel that this system is wide open to corruption?  What's keeps an unscrupulous person from trying to shill bid up the auctions?  If they do accidently win they still get the item at 10-20% less than another winner would, and they're reselling anyway.  in theory they could sit back there and try to jack up prices to increase profit.  they win, the sellers win, only the buyers lose.

now i'm not saying that happened, i'm just curious about the system setup itself.  am i way off base?  is my unserstanding of the setup wrong?  should i go away and be quiet for awhile?

It doesn't seem right, does it

Frank explains it very well and after I read what he says it all makes perfect sense!

After a couple days go by and I stumble on a thread about the auction it just doesn't seem right again

Then Frank clears it all up (usually for the "last time") and everything makes perfect sense once more!

On my troll posts on the previous page: Trolls have to have some credibility in order to really be a troll. You know? Pipswitch (sorry pip! nothing personal here but you're the best example obviously;) has no credibility so therefore he cannot be a troll. His actions are more of a defensive mechanism because he (rightly) feels like he's under attack no matter if he's justified or no.
A troll would be like if Formcritic or Jason Zavoda or somebody all of a sudden starts causing trouble out of left field and then you're wondering "WTF" but the guy is seemingly credible/decent after all so you're sort of not sure what to do... I think that some people will say that Bclarkie's a troll but that guy is right nearly every fucking time about something. It's uncanny! He cannot spell for shit though, if he could he would be in the "ELEGANT" category but since his spelling is the suxxors he's just unique guardian angel'ish'
Kk, I'm outta here and back to the art thread very soon!

It is not like that at all, they are bidding on stuff that they feel they can mark up and re-sell, not shilling for extra profit.

So my current view of ignoring their listings is probably best then, much in the same way as the Coug.

Seems if they can get away with it they will, if they are pulled on it, they refund etc. Doesn't strike me as a great way to run a good business, although it probably makes it a profitable one.

ok, that makes more sense.  i was under the impression that they were bidding on every single item, no matter what it was.  thanks for clearing that up for me.

also, i wasn't saying that shilling was occuring, i was just pondering whether the system was open to it.

It appears that two different companies are involved.

So, the potential for a real conflict is with the various owners/investors of the two companies, not necessarily with the rest of us.

If you are an owner/investor in company A and you bid things up it potentially transfers profits to Company B.

If you are also an owner/investor in company B, you must make sure your investors in Company A do not think you are doing so to deny them profits.

If your investors in Company A believe that you are benefiting them, and the investors in Company B believe that you are benefiting them....  there is a likely answer.

And, the likely answer is that without company A and B both present at the auction, things would sell for so little that most would stop consigning and the auction would go away.  That is probably not good for company A or company B or for GenCon.

Is that what happened to Origins?

This just keeps seeming like people don't like Troll and Toad and fish for both real and not so real ways to bash them.  Can't we move on?  There is a state auctioneers board, state and local tax agencies and probably at least two independent audits (likely four or more, company A, B and two charities) of the books each year.  Then there are the owners/investors of two companies and two non profits involved?

If there are substantive issues, report them and they will get resolved.  If not, then can't we focus more on collecting d&d and less on personal crusades?

Either way, if someone make a profit charity without telling anyone is dishonest and reprehensible.

Isn't it clearly advertised as two separate auctions?
A gen con auction and a separate charity auction at gen con?

In any event you can request the nonprofits 990 (tax return) in writing and look for yourself.  Almost every nonprofit has expenses.  That's why we have 990's and Charity Navigator and/or Guidestar which collect and make many of them available to the public.

If a disproportionate amount of expenses go to administration, fund raising or consultants, many people don't support a charity.

It's always a good idea to learn about a charity before supporting it.  The most common misuse of trust is through telemarketing charity scams.  You can read all about some of them on Charity Navigator.

It's certainly reasonable to ask how a charity is managed and what the management fees and consulting arrangements may be.  And, if you don't like the answers, don't support them.

Pipswich said it best about the auction stuff I think. Assuming that they're legit he's completely correct as far as I understand about charity in the U.S.A.!
I have a question about something and here's as good a place as any to ask (considering all the people who understand the laws and regulations and everything  )
Suppose I was to win an auction on Ebay. Yoohoo! So I win this auction, say it was for some original art or something I guess... I'm all happy and shit... but... Lo and behold!! I come to find out that another buyer worked out a deal with that seller after I had won the auction!!! The seller ships the original art to that piece of shit buyer instead of me  Is that pretty shady or what? Anyways, what would you do if that happened to you? What if that same said buyer turns out to be some person who's giving all this moral advice on a forum I'm always visiting?

that's really f'ed up....I would put the seller in the shady dealers thread, so we all know not to buy from that person, and if your positive on who the buyer was making deals knowing that someone else had already won the auction, I would also post that on here......others have gotten blasted on here for much less...
