Don't get me wrong, Tharzidun. Just struck me funny.

A lot of this stuff is more intentionally funny that you'd think :wink:

The non staff artists were paid by the piece (as you can see they knocked out a shitload of work) and many of them didn't have many references/models and just went from their own imagination. Also on the bigger drawings, they would use more negative space because they were paid xxx amount for a big ass drawing. The more sky and negative areas the quicker they would get done. That being said, there are a lot of painstaking drawings here as you can obviously see.

I just picked up a TSR cover painting with cigarettes and a beer can (like a day old camp site with trash left there) right there in the foreground!

The cover art has the same trouble with funny anatomy and whatnot:

Look how long the Kings left arm is holding up that crown

I'm drawn more to the photorealist guys like Caldwell and Fields because they get the anatomy correct most of the time. A lot of people prefer Easley, Elmore, Holloway (and on and on) but the more "pure" fantasy stuff tends to have wrong proportions so there's always a drawback. Ken Kelly generally has an anatomical problem in every individual piece that I have ever seen. Anyways, guys who create the art straight from their imagination tend to run into trouble, The guys who use models and references tend to be "not fantastic enough" in their fantasy-as it is partly staged in real life. It's a no-win scenario :wink:

What has always made me laugh about the Dragonlance cover painting is the skeleton guy in the background.

He's just so damn happy about the crown. It's like his team scored a touchdown.

Wow, I'll never look at the cover of DL Adventures the same again, thanks for pointing that out.

I'm also partial to cityscape type illustrations for all their detail. I've wondered where Emirikol the Chaotic has ended up.

I don't know if there are a lot of "grails" for me as I realize that I wount be able to own them (just like the houses and women).. all you can hope for is to be in the right place at the right time with enough money in your pocket... just like with the houses and women
