On Amazon.ca the preorder is $23.31 Canadian.  All I have to do is add a couple more items (or buy 2) to qualify for the free shipping.

I don't understand the big deal. I play 4e now and I am happy to be getting in games of D&D. My two oldest son's play it, my friends play it and all of the local gaming groups play it. Sure, I like the first edition stuff a lot better, it brings back memories from high school and playing in the 80's, but the bottom line is, if I want to play D&D now, I have to play 4e...

Which internet are you talking about here? Because the general consensus I seem to be picking up is that 4e has been pretty well received. Anything else I can say on the matter would be a personal attack, as the rest of your comments are just troll bait... well, on most forums anyway.

It's easier and cheaper to invest in a PS3. Better yet, a Wii. They play Gamecube discs, and those are pretty cheap.
One of the major problems with 3/4/whatever E is the lack of imagination required to play or DM. Not to mention the heinous offense of calling it D&D. If they called it D&MTG, it would be more accurate.

That's all I'm going to say on the subject. When this topic first came up last summer, I was severely castigated for daring to mention that I'd actually played one session of 4e ... I've never been more embarrassed for this place or for the tight-asses who felt their worlds were crumbling because a couple of people who post here had played 4e.

I'll leave it at that. Edition wars are probably better left to Dragonsfoot, anyway.

Well, I was dead set against 3.x Edition for a long time; but mostly that was due to ignorance on my part.
(Not stupidity, ignorance )

I am not planning to jump on the 4E bandwagon or anything anytime soon (If ever).
I might not ever play 3.5 Edition either, though I WILL do so, if the grandkids want to.
Besides, I have nearly all the 3.x DCC stuff now....
Gotta do SOMETHING with it and it is not all easy to use with C&C.

I have plenty of C&C/1st/2nd/3.5 Stuff to enjoy with grandkids.
They will be in college long before I run out of stufff to DM them through without 3.5 or 4E either one.
And I figure by then WotCo will be on 15th Edition or so anyway, or long out of business (More likely the last).

But I wont bash 4E either, dont know anything about it except what I read here or other forums and Blogs.

I dont think a re-do of T1 is worth 80 bucks, but then Most folks dont think an Orange B3 is worth more than the Green B3.
And some figure they would rather have the latter version anyway.

My previous statements as to the value of the newest re-do of T1 aside, collectors are a VERY varied sort of critter, with MANY varying areas of interest.

Some other collectors treasures may seem like nothing special to me, while my treasures may seem like so much pulp to others.

I think a BIG factor in the game (4e) is the ability of the DM and the desire for the group to ROLEplay.

When 4e first came out, we played a short test game with some guys from my gaming group, the DM was very dry in his ability to DM the new game and for the most part it just felt like some tactical board game with no D&D elements. It was almost like playing a watered down version of a World of Warcraft boardgame. I decided I didn't like 4e. It wasn't a ROLEplaying game, it was a ROLLplaying game.

BUT, now that I've played a lot of games, it really comes down to the DM and his/her ability to get you into the game, to ROLEplay certain elements and get the players to interact and take part. Now, after seeing how the game can differ so much by the ability (or lack of) the DM has, the game is quite enjoyable.

He could be talking about 4e sales on ebay. For example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/DUNGEONS-DRAGONS-4T ... tsupported

In the last few months the price of new 4e material has come down to the point where these sellers are looking to break even or take a small loss on the stock they have. I have no idea what is being said on the main stream RPG forums but $ speak the loudest. If retailers cannot sell 4e at anywhere near the cover price then there is a huge problem. If retailers can't sell it at a profit then they will stop ordering it and the system will not be produced. It isn't even necessarily the quality of the system. This is a niche market luxury good in a very bad economy. It is a literate game system in an ever increasingly illiterate society. It is a pen and paper game in a streaming video age.

It doesn't help that 4e is a radical departure from the previous D&D game system. It also doesn't help that it was designed primarily to make people buy the new rules and make all their old material obsolete. With the 4e license agreement there has been a flood of extremely cheap yet decent quality 3e and 3.5 material pushed out onto the market. The DCC line can be had for a song, the same witht he Kalamar setting, all the 3rd party publisher fare good and bad is for sale for a fraction of its original cover price. In this economy gamers arent spending what they once did and when they can get 10 or 20 3e items for the cost of 1 4e rulebook, they are choosing 3e more often or you wouldnt see retailer dumping new 4e products.

Would someone please explain WHY people are saying that 3.5D&D has been merged with M:TG

Anyone dare to step up?

I thought it was a joke towards 4e because they have the power cards that you have a deck of for each character's abilities/powers/spells/etc... I thought that was the joke, but I might be wrong.

The cards were introduced into 3.5 originally. At the moment, I forgot the actual name of the Campaign Cards (and previously in the RPGA they gave out "die bump" certs for those who won their tables at tournaments). You are limited to the number of Campaign Cards based on the level of your character (1-levels 1-4, 2-levels 5-8, 3-levels 9-12, etc).

The cards did things like:
     - Once per adventure reroll any failed skill check
     - Once per adventure, add 1d6 damage to your next attack (this must be declared before making your attack, and is expended if missed)

If you want more examples of cards, I can look for them and post them. They're not too game-imbalancing...

Oh yeah, I remember the cards now for 3.5, I had completely forgotten. We never used them in the few years our group played 3.x D&D.

Amazon has it incorrectly retailed at $29.95, and with a pre-order discount price of $19.77. I'm a sucker for super-adventures, so I bit.

Of course, I believe that Amazon reserves the right to change the price once the product comes in (the price guarantee is if the price goes lower, they'll give you the lower price). Even if it goes up, I'll probably still get it, and if I decide not to, hey, the other half of my order to satisfy the $25 free shipping will likely ship for free!  8)

I absolutely agree that in these hard times, people aren't as likely to adopt a capital intensive new edition. Of course, WotC is in the unfortunate position that they have warehouses full of product, whereas the vast majority of 3pp have the basement of their house full of stuff that doesn't need to be cleared out. I've been picking up Kalamar on the cheap, and have indeed noticed that there are still a lot of 3e products that are outbidding 4e stock. I was actually shocked to see 4e DMGs going for $3.99 (I would have bid at least one of them up a little ;) ).

But I don't want my original point to be taken out of context. I took issue with the fact that "internet consensus" said that 4e had a ruleset that sucked with little of the system to praise. This old horse has been beaten to death and I had thought the bones had settled and the ghosts have settled down to raise families of their own...

PS I don't mind 4e. Not close to my favourite edition, but it has its merits, and as has been said upthread, a lot of times if you want to play D&D, you need to keep with the current edition.

Just jumping out of lurker status to say your not alone Xaxaxe.  Though I find the maturity level here outclasses Dragonsfoot by a pair of boots of striding and springing (ahh the memories!)...even if those of us who play 4E get a bit flame broiled at times...hehehe.

With a DM that understands what OD&D/AD&D roleplay is, and how to stay out of tactical combat grind on a miniature mat, 4E is a blast.

More on topic...loved Hommlet...but holy hand grenades Batman!!...people have lost their minds on eBay.

You may now hurl your fireballs at me for saying 4E is fun and even mentioning miniatures (lets not start that thread again)...just please do it gently and with respect.  This site is a treasure and I too understand its purpose.  =)
