Well I would like to add my condolences, to friends and family. However I am also going to (as long winded as usual) Admit I just heard it today when my wife told me. The first place I went was here to the acaeum.

I think I can sum up all of this for myself in this manner. Gary touched my life not personaly but through his work. In the late 70's early 80's I was a youth who had a lot of things but not much as we call it family. I had poor reading skills, a large imagination and a while lot of time on my hands.

We moved around a fair bit and I always had the typical troubles finding friends. I was in the wrong crowds alot. A kid on the school bus had these books and they looked cool I asked if I could see them. He hesitated as he feared they would be ruined. He asked if I would be careful. I moved to sit next to him so I could look at them. My first brush with AD&D a Monster Manual. I soon began asking questions. One thing lead to another and Joel Mattson and I were best friends.

Now I know this dosnt mean much but its my memories. And I owe gary and his family alot. My reading skills improved. My social sittuation took me away from so many of the poorer choice of crowds. I spent more time in amongst some other groups. I never did fit in any group but Joel always was there and so was the game.

I played even when only alone. I read and I studied and I learnt and it opened my desire to leanr and read. I did a lot of things that were not good or I am no proud of when I was younger, yet one thing I can say is that "Without Gary, and D&D , I would have probably ended up in prison someplace." Because of D&D and Gary I was often not where the trouble was because I was gamming.

So on a different twist to it all, Thanks Gary, for providing me an out so often in my younger years that you through your game allowed me to distance myself from the troubles, and like yourself become a husband and father of 6 who teaches them and interacts with them as a family the one thing I never had when I was younger.

And Thank you to his family and friends for letting all of us also share in his life as our desires and wants often took him away from many of you in his desire to make the things and or take the time to make himself available to us all.

We had a nice tribute to Gary last night on Lemur Chat. At 10 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. Pacific, we all raised a glass and toasted the man ... so you had guys in Texas, Pennsylvania, Nevada, other U.S. states, and Canada all giving the man a nice send-off despite not being anywhere near each other.

I forget whose idea it was, but it was brilliant.

On that note, I kept a copy of the log of last night's chat.  I've cleaned up the formatting quite a bit so it's legible, for those that couldn't make it.  The toast is about 4/5ths of the way down.
