I thought it was mentioned at some point that WotC wanted to get rid of the OGL for 4th edition.  Was this ever confirmed or denied?

According to WOTC's FAQ, that's exactly what the "Character Vault" will let players and DMs do, with a catch.  Want to hear what the catch is?

In order to use any given rulebook with your stored characters, you have to prove you own the rulebook by logging the serial number from your copy of the rulebook (and paying a fee, of course).  Serial numbers can't be shared between accounts.

Got that? Borrowing rulebooks will be against the (online) rules.  (Sounds more like a Hackmaster rule, doesn't it?)  Also, buying used rulebooks becomes something of a crapshoot, if you're interested in online play.

Also, the Character Vault won't support third-party rules.

You know, I'm getting the impression that WOTC's marketing geniuses spent a lot of time obsessing about customer lock-in.

That's actually a feature the D20 license forbids non-WOTC software from including, because non-WOTC D20 products aren't allowed to include rules for generating ability scores.  WOTC has been basically reserving that for themselves, without really doing it themselves.  Apparently, they were waiting until they figured out how to maximize the profits.

It is actually quite funny

OK....so, a general report on my success as the world's first official 4th Edition collector!

This month I have collected:

1) Squishy Gleemax Brain (Thank you, serleran)

2)  Free RPG Day Module, Treasure of Talon Pass

3)  4th Edition Collector's Boxed Set (all three books, first print)

Unfortunately, Barnes and Noble sent me a slightly damaged box (probably dropped in the warehouse) of the 4th Edition Collector's Boxed Set.  SO, I contacted Barnes and Noble and told them that I was ticked at them for the poor service.

SO, today, Barnes and Noble had the UPS guy drop me off a new, shrinkwrapped set of the...

4)  4th Edition Collector's Boxed Set

Which gives me two copies of the set...one to read and one to keep pristine in shrinkwrap.

(My son was hella pleased as well, because his high school group uses 4th Edition and they are gaming a lot this summer...and he knew better than to ask me if he could use my collector's boxed set.  But now....)

I still have some items to collect...and some 4th Edition collectors are ahead of me in total items collected...but I remain the first official 4th Edition collector and still kicking bottom.  

Don't forget the prelude 4e stuff from minis to the 2 books I think they put out.

Also you need the Keep on the Shadowfell module.

(One thing really stopping me is I can't be arsed to do the research to find out what I need to get - this forum really suits me but I feel a 3E/4E forum/site will just serve to irritate me )
