So stains on pages do deduct from the grade correct? Or does separate just mean noted in the "white, off-white" etc?

Thanks for being here btw!

STAINS are a completely different issue than page quality. Any stain is going to impact the grade.

Yellowed edges to interior pages do not affect the grade unless they are deteriorated to a point where they are brittle.

I have never seen an RPG with brittle pages though I am sure there must be some out there somewhere.

As for being here, you're very welcome - love the discussions here.

Why would yellowed pages not negatively impact an items grade? It certainly does in my opinion and in the comic book & book collecting communities.

Page quality is graded SEPERATELY and does not affect the grade of the book negatively unless the pages are brittle.

A book can be a 9.8 with cream to off-white pages. Is this less desirable than a book with white pages? Yes. This is why page quality is listed very clearly on the label just below the grade at CBCS and middle bottom at CGC.

Here is a link top a Heritage Auction with a 9.8 graded book with cream to off white pages.

So please correct me if I'm incorrect about this, what you're indicating is that the page coloration is mentioned, but is no part of the actual grade? It is its own separate comment exclusively?
And thank you for your reply to my prior question.

Okay, so you didn't actually answer my question, so I'll try again slightly differently. Correct me if I'm wrong, but page quality is no part of the NUMERIC grade. Page quality is mentioned separately, in a comment. So in the case of a shrink-wrapped item for instance, there would be a numerical grade for the cover, a commentary for the pages, and then a letter grade for the quality of the shrink-wrap, is that right?

Ok ladies & gents! Now the bids are open... will we read another copy&paste or not?
(No offense intended but this situation is now comic! ...and the pages in this case do not matter...)

This is why a lot of comic collectors won't collect anything not labeled "WHITE" or "WHITE/OFF WHITE"  in the description. For some collectors it's a big deal, others not so much. For Golden age collectors (and some silver age) there just aren't White pages on many of the items they are looking for, the paper was cheap and turned brittle/yellow if in the sun for any short period of time (much like pulps). Other grades can be objective in that there is evidence of a ding, crease, color break, stain, etc. Page color is purely subjective (although many collectors use "color guides" they can hold up to the paper to determine White, off white, cream, etc). BTW, this scale has been in effect since 1970 (over 50 years), it's not something new that only came about when comics began to be slabbed. In short, page color is seen as a matter of personal preference rather than a grading issue....one man's yellowing is another man's cream, etc.

That is why the Action #1 graded 9.0 is considered "The most valuable comic on Earth"...it actually (somehow) has white pages!

CGC, CBCS and others are using the same grading scale as comics from what I have seen. Below are references. The only "new" grading instance I've seen is the grade for SW quality:

https://www.cgccomics.com/grading/gradi ... e=standard

https://www.cgccomics.com/grading/gradi ... ge-quality

https://www.cgccomics.com/grading/gradi ... estoration

FIRST: Sincere apologies for my repeated posts over the weekend, every time I tried to post I was receiving a "gateway error" and did not think my posts had gone through. I was NOT trying to be difficult.

This is correct.

The book is assigned a .5 to 10.0 grade.

The page quality is also determined and listed on the label separately and judged independently of the grade of the book.

EXCEPTION: brittle pages

NOTE: quite often pages with dark edges that are not brittle will have "transfer oxidation" essentially staining the inside of the cover (and sometimes the outside) and this would affect the grade of the book.

SO a shrinkwrap book would in effect have 3 grades: The item itself, the shrinkwrap grade, and page quality.  For SW items the page quality is determined by observing the outside edges of the pages. Usually the outside edges are the darkest part of the pages and I think every SW module submitted so far has received WHITE pages.

Again - page quality is typically far less an issue with RPGs because the paper itself is much higher quality than typical comics. Even though a significant majority of RPG items will have WHITE pages we felt it still necessary to include the page quality on the label since in those instances when the pages are not white, it could significantly impact the desirability (and price)

How does writing or highlighting effect the page quality designation? Otherwise really nice white pages. Or small/large coffee stains?

I would hope those would be graded harshly. I hope that doesn't sound mean. IMHO, I think a lot of folks would still want these sorts of items. I still like having some of them now. I just wouldn't grade them yet. Maybe in 10 years. Because I think there might be more collectors than first print D3s in existence. Each of the monos really.

Writing or stains on the page would not affect the page quality (unless it was just completely stained all the way through). Page quality is a measure or oxidation and deterioration.

Writing and stains on interior pages WOULD affect the GRADE of the book. How much is VERY dependent on a lot of things. How much writing/staining, does it affect the playablility? What's the "structural grade" of book already? If a book is a 9.8 with writing and stains on the inside, that's going to be a significant deduction.

If the book is a 5.0 structurally, if the interior writing is very minor, there may be no additional drop in grade.

The grade of a book is assigned based on an "accumulation of defects". When we start getting into mid and lower grades, it often takes "quite a bit" to drop a book from a 4 to a 3.5 for example.

Hope this helps.

Yes, it can happen. I once had a postal worker who would fold items too much. Usually it would only affect the carboard cover, but sometimes would split the interior papers if they were too brittle.

Also, the weather conditions which lead to excessive staple rust (such as from being left in a garage) can turn a variety of paper types brittle.

Perfect, and this makes sense.
