mbassoc2003 wrote in Your opinion doesnt matter anymore:That doesn't get away from the fact that it is not even in Good Condition. A large majority of the existing copies in the world today are equal to, or in better condition than that one. That makes the grading the thing completely pointless. The plastic box around it and the statement that the buyer should not judge the condition of the item and buy it because it is so rare that only 6 copies are better than it, is a test to see how stupid people are. It's no different than blindly believing what any institution of 'experts' tells you and choosing not to engage in rational thought because the 'expert' has already done that bit for you. How many people are doing that every day of their lives because the 'expert' says they need to do this or do that.

Someone has effectively said, 'this is the absolute worst copy I have ever seen, with the possible exception of one other. Every other copy I have ever seen has been substantially better than this. It is so bad that I cannot possibly charge someone for my service without listing it as equally bad as the worst copy I've ever graded. This copy never even managed to reach average, its that bad. We place this in the bottom 25% of all copies we've ever seen.'

But the seller chooses to lie about the quality of what he is selling and encourage the idiots among the community to not think about what they are doing, just buy from him? That is deceitful right there.

Just so you know sir, a "Good" grading on the CGC grading scale is a 2.0 to 2.5. So you are correct, my copy is not in Good condition, it is FINE-!

Tszii wrote in Your opinion doesnt matter anymore:I also dont get how folks selling PODs are just capitalists, buyer beware; but this guy is a thief for having the cheapest current copy on ebay?

I have no issue in either case, PoD or Sealed in Plastic, with the pricing mechanism. The evidence is there for all to see, and if a buyer chooses to buy something and pay an extra $50 for something PoD from eBay over Lulu, that's entirely on him. Likewise, if a buyer chooses to pay and extra $2000 for an magazine for a plastic moth box and the assurance that he will never be able to check or know the truth, that's entirely on him.

The plastic box thing is based on the greater fool business model. No-one is buying a magazine that costs $500 for $2500 because they want the magazine in their collection. They are buying it because they believe that in the future some idiot will be more stupid than they are, and pay them more for it because its still in its box. The buyer is doing something stupid and betting that he'll find someone more stupid than himself in the future. He's gambling that he's not the stupidest person out these. That's one helluva gamble for many of these muppets.

That is wholly different from the person who gets the magazine and sends it for grading. They are buying something for whatever, $500, paying to have it graded, and selling it for $2500. That is damn good business sense. They are not the idiots here. They are merely preying on the stupidity of the buying public, which indeed is no different from buying a stack of PoD modules for $20 a pop and selling them for $70 a shot. In each instance I see nothing wrong with the buy/sell process. I do see something morally wrong with telling someone that they do not need to think for themselves but just do as they are told. But morals aside, if a buyer is that stupid they really do need to learn a lesson life should have taught them before they grew up.

In both instances I believe the buy sell transaction is entirely personal between the buyer and seller. The seller is merely exploiting a current business opportunity, and the buyer is merely paying over the odds for his own bone idleness and/or willful ignorance.

Zenonmarfat wrote in Your opinion doesnt matter anymore:Just so you know sir, a "Good" grading on the CGC grading scale is a 2.0 to 2.5. So you are correct, my copy is not in Good condition, it is FINE-!

These are all merely subjective terms. They have no definition or standard that is not based purely on their own belief in what they want those words to mean, and they do not have any experience in the RPG industry. That said, if you have a mechanism to buy something for whatever, and sell it for 5X, that is good business sense if you can get the buyers. More power to you. My only issue was the mischaracterization of the rarity of the item and the statement that your buyer should not think about what he was doing because you'd already paid someone to do his thinking for him. If I send a copy of something to them and they grade it 3, but its the only copy they have graded, and everyone sells them regularly on eBay, would I be lying if I posted saying my copy was the only known copy, and the highest graded copy in the world? Just because there are 8 copies graded and yours falls in the lowest 25%, does not make your copy rare or high quality, and your characterization as such is deliberately misleading.

I can only imagine that you didn't point out that the overwhelming majority of graded examples are better than the one you are selling was because you preferred your take on the truth to the actual truth. But again, you are a seller selling in a relatively free market, and you have the right to represent your version of things in whatever way best creates the chance of you making the sale. I do understand that. But just so we're clear, the only reason you cannot lay claim to have the worst copy ever graded is because CGC's system of grading is too general and not accurate enough to differentiate between this copy and the other similarly graded item. That is the flaw with the whole grading system and the misrepresentation of what is being said. It is not accurate, and it does not represent what is available in the collecting community or representative of what collectors have in their collections, or have had pass through their collections.

I clearly used the word 'lie' in the heat of the moment, when I should have used the word 'misrepresent', and for that I apologies. I believe you misrepresented the rarity of the magazine and mischaracterized its condition, as neither are exceptional examples, and even CGC place it at the bottom of that they see, which you failed to point out to your buyer. But then, it is up to the buyer to understand what he is doing, isn't it?

I really, really wish you would educate yourself on this topic before spouting your nonsense. You want to preach to me about misrepresentation, maybe you should look at what you preach in your posts. It is anything but an honest dialogue or critique of the industry.

First of all, let's get something straight right off the bat. This is a magazine, understand? It does not require a D&D expert to ascertain its condition. Furthermore, grading is simply that....GRADING. The item in question is being graded on its CONDITION. They are examining bindery or printing defects. They are examining that the cover is flat with no surface wear. That inks are bright with high reflectivity. That corners are cut square and sharp. That the spine is tight and flat. That staples are centred and clean with no rust. That the paper is white, supple and fresh. That there are no interior autographs or owner signatures. That there are no stains, blemishes, or humidity/water damage. One does not need a PHD in RPG's to do this. Magazines have been graded by CGC for years from Sports Illustrated to Playboy. To take it to your extremes, maybe those who grade Playboy magazine should have a Degree in human anatomy!

Secondly, my graded copy of this magazine is not in the bottom 25% of graded copies. If you knew anything about grading or how graded items are marketed, one never lists how many copies are worse than the item you are selling... it's irrelevent to the buyer. The buyer simply wants to know the population at that grade and how many are graded higher. For your information, there are other graded copies of this magazine out there graded lower than mine. Based on the CGC population reports, there are 12 graded Dragon #1's out there, with 6 better than mine. That places mine firmly as mid-range. Now this is empirical evidence of the rarity of Dragon #1 conditions from this small, albeit limited, sample. Hopefully more will be graded in the future to get a more detailed and accurate representation of what's actually out there as per condition. This is what benefits the hobby in general....FACTS & DATA. Grading provides this and is what has led to the explosive growth of the comic and sports collecting hobbies.

I have been in touch recently with a well known dealer who proclaimed that an item was exceedingly rare and that he had only come across it 3 times in 25 years. I found 2 copies in less than month of searching. Now this dealer was dealing with his experiences, but those experiences do not necessarily correlate to actual FACTS. This is the great benefit of grading, actual empirical data that one can base their decisions on rather than opinion.

Your continued misrepresentation stating that the buyer does not have to think is also very distasteful. I stated that the buyer does not have JUDGE condition. That is a simple and straightforward fact. Someone impartial to both the buyer and seller has stated a condition based on the criteria listed above. I may think it deserves a better grade, it's irrelevant. This is what it is and the buyer knows EXACTLY what he is getting. To me, this is the most honest form of selling!

Do you really think that most of us go through the criteria listed above before selling something ungraded.... be honest! CGC's grading scale is thorough, complete, and the best that I have seen. Certainly better than any description that I have seen on any eBay listing... ever!

Lastly, my graded copy of Dragon #1 is a 5.5. According to CGC that represents "A slightly above-average collectible with several moderate defects.". There you have it, you state my copy is below average, yet an impartial grader differs from you based an rigorous grading criteria as opposed to your own opinion formed from a hostile view of the grading industry. Who's opinion would you trust more? I know who's opinion I would follow.

I just wish you would educate yourself on this topic more. You appear to be an intelligent man, albeit ornery with his opinions, and those opinions seem to ferment to the point of arguing just for the sake of arguing. It is ok to allow oneself to be open to new ideas... they are not all a conspiracy to deprive of freedom and liberty and thought.

Peace,

Richard

Whelp, I accidentally deleted my post. I get to do this twice.

Its beyond cynical to think folks who want graded items are participating in a greater fools strategy. Ive known too many who buy graded sports cards, comics and Pokemon. My local comic store even grades comics straight from UPS. Graded items are easier to display, customers have more information about what they are buying, they can immediately display them because they are more protected. Some want the 9s or 10s. Some buy the few 1.0s. A few even buy the scale 1-10 to display. Its a pain in the ass to grade items and expensive if only sending a few things at a time. Grading is value add - for some, again, not everyone.

I cant debate if PSA and CGC have credibility. They do. Not with every human, including the monks in Tibet. Not every soul. They do with many in different hobbies though, including those who owned million dollar cards and comics. I agree with those folks. I respect if you dont.

Five or ten years from now we will have folks on this forum, or discord, talking about pursing S1 CGC 10s. As long as I am still alive and kicking, I hope to be discussing all sorts of topics with you. :)

He didnt mean you were a jerk seller of the Dragon #1! We just free wheel sometimes and disagree. And you dont post enough. And tell me how you felt about that 5.5. Bastards could have gave it a 6.0!

You're probably right. I remember a similar discussion about 15 years ago where I said everything would be published electronically and available for free online in 20 years. We're pretty much there now. Everything with very few exceptions that is published now is freely available to anyone who is willing to go and download them. For those who choose to pay, there is that option too. This mechanism seems to have been establised with the tasit consent of the publishers as it ensures wide distribution and use of their products, and also ensures that money is focussed on purchase of genuinely good product (in the opinion of the buyers that is) as opposed to being spread across and diluted by the whole gamut of garbage that is published every month.

Exactly. In fact, and I have no way of knowing unless I missed something posted in the thread, if the seller is the seller of origin for this graded item, it is a really good economic move. For a marginal outlay you get to mark up the perceived value of your product 5x or more. There is nothing wrong with that.

Just following up on submitted modules for grading.

Mine were mailed off in July 2022 and aren't due back to April or May of this this year. Frankly, its been so long, I go long stretches and forget I even sent them. I have zero excitement now, but expect to be happy to see them graded. I still have a concern they wont grade them for one reason or another. Card submissions are occasionally returned ungraded for several reasons.

Also, has anyone else here submitted any for grading? If so, what did you submit? Folks out there are submitting more than ever. Its up to 260 days from 180 for a return. Keep in mind, that's business days. 260 days is about 13 months. You can pay essentially double, or $85 per magazine, to have them graded in 70 days, or 3-4 months. ikr?

I remember that, and I remember agreeing (maybe not in the discussion) due to the fact that the rampant music and movie sharing would inevitably lead to anything being able to be digitalized having it happen and shared.

That is obscene.  Too much life can happen during that long of a wait.  It needs to come down to a month, maybe two...the industry needs to either hire more people or do something else to scale to demand.

The 2020 collecting craze got them well behind. Though they have caught up on cards and comics, sealed packs and magazines are still behind and no solution seems to be in the works. Based on what I make up as I type, I dont think they expected the collecting crazy to continue this long and expect it to peter-out any day now.

Holy fucknuts. That just told me if the answer to the question should I start sending this stuff off to be graded? (Answer: Nope). I mean, I'm 60, there's a pretty good chance I'll pass on before they get back to me.

Isn't there a way to submit them at Comic Cons or through an authorized Comic Dealer and the turn-around is quicker?

Walk Through is $150, or 3% minimum. So $45 for a year, $85 for 3-4 months, $150 for three days.

Based on nothing, I think a 9.6 S1 mono could sell for $600-$800 soon, so it could be worth it. I say this so I can look back and see if I was right or just wrong again. :)

I should have my graded modules back by Thursday, goodness willing. They have shipped. The grades are posted to my account. Overall, they averaged a 7 for 11 books. All of my submissions had "White" pages. This was important to me. Ill include part of the definitions below.

The wait time is down to 60 days for submissions. It dropped by over 100 days in a couple of weeks. Prices went up by about $3. They have updated the searchable submissions to include about 30 modules and rule books. They are beginning to distinguish printings, so that's nice.

I might remove the shrink from a couple of my modules, so they can be graded.

I dont believe there are going to be many graded modules for a very long time if ever. Precious few modules will exist above a 8.0-8.5 imho. The dude with the CGC 6.0 Green S1 for $500 is making more sense to me.

** expired/removed eBay auction **

Magazines are graded as harshly as cards.

My S1 first print got a 4.5. It was one of my nicest. Yes, it had spine creases, a few small dents and scratches but damn I hit a major defect you cant even see in some light.

Or is it harsh? 10s in comics are basically unicorns. A single major defect OR accumulation of minor defects makes a magazine a 7. Having both a single "major" AND several "smaller" defects means its a 6. Staple rust apparently takes a magazine straight to an 8, but wont make a magazine that's already an 8 any lower. And "rust" begins at tarnish - less than bright as I understand. Grader defects are noted.

Back to the green S1 on ebay for $500...

These are the notes.

spine split bottom of spine
spine stress lines breaks color
wear spine breaks color
multiple crease cover
multiple staple rusted
pages and edges are white, unmarked.

The cover is far from perfect at a 6.0, but its likely the second or third best condition S1 on ebay right now. That's not a stretch. And its 5x the price. But I wouldnt buy the $98 S1 that looks to be, maybe, in slightly better condition, pay to have it graded to end up with another 6.0 or 6.5.

High grades are going to be more rare than I thought, and I thought they would be stupid rare from the jump. Those who are into grading would expect it, but they dont exist in this hobby right now, and may never. The $500 green S1 makes more sense, but I wouldnt pay it. I would pay 1k for 8.0, but I may not have too.

I have an green S1 "in" shrink, but the painters tape, the bundle of modules was wrapped in, removed the shrink from the spine side. Its still in that shrink, but its 1/16" of plastic away from the top and bottom from being out of shrink. Late this year or early next, I might find out of the staples are rusted and send it off.

Shrink is not condition. 8.0 from the worlds largest comic grader is IMHO. I wonder what my opinion of shrink will be in three years. Its already degraded. (Boom! Pun! :) )

I am normally not a big fan of entombing my RPG things in plastic, but I decided to do so with my Dragon #1.  I have to admit I am happy with the grade.  It is the second highest grade awarded to date. (Small sample size alert.)  Pretty good considering I bought this off the TSR table at Origins 2 and threw it in a box for 30 years before I decided to bag and board it.

I dont know what to say. That is glorious. It may be the best looking #1 in existence. It also may stay the best looking one.
