Precisely my reaction. I went from having absolutely no interest in 5th Edition to having next to no interest in it, when I heard that MC was leaving the project. Now that it's being likened to 1st edition, I'm slightly more intrigued. That's progress, in my book. There is now a significant nonzero chance I will actually flip through the rulebooks in my FLGS (F playtesting) when they're released to see if there's any there, there.

I signed up to be a playtester a while back (presumably, many many others did too, hence the server issues)... they sent out the download links for the playtest materials this morning.  The info was at http://www.dndnext.com (I think, can't check now from the office computer).  I'm sure someone with better writing than myself will post a review of the playtest rules soon... at first glance, it seems very 1E-ish, with the 3.0/3.5/D20 mechanic for checks, but very simple and uncluttered... also, at this point miniatures appear optional with specific reference to 'theatre of the mind' role playing as a legitimate style.  Again, at first glance, I like what I see and will play-test it :)

So far I've heard it being referred to as an abomination. Huge amounts of HP for players, stats for monsters, no hit dice for monsters, at will powers for clerics and wizards, something akin to feats and healing surges... doesn't sound anything like 1e. Maybe I am hearing wrong but it is getting a big thumbs down from a lot of people I read online. Personally I stopped at the 'at will powers for wizards and clerics' which Mearl's talked about recently.

On the acaeum I'm not much into talking about the mechanics. This just sounds like a rather monumental failure by WotC and I wonder whether they will survive another purge by Hasbro. I think they have lost a good chunk of their fanbase to Pathfinder, they long ago tossed their older fanbase by completely failing to support AD&D and they have lost one of their main sales outlets (Borders) and if the financial news is to be believed Barnes & Noble is soon to follow. They have also just boned their 4e fanbase. At the very least this game seems to be incompatable with 4e.

Personally I have no reason or desire for WotC and 5e to fail. It just seems as inevitable as Greek Tragedy and their is a fascination I find in seeing it happen.

The solution just seems so simple. Restart 3.5 and work out a business model that is not based a new rulesystem every 3 or 4 years. They could even fund special projects on their own site in a kickstarter method (without actually using kickstarter and the percentage they rake off the top). WotC has an incredible wealth of material from various rulesystems. Why they aren't at least milking pdf sales of their considerable library of out of print material is beyond me.

I've said it a million times....a company that sits on 40 years of reprintable material and does nothing with it deserves what they get. Could you imagine Marvel or DC comics sitting on 40 years of XMen, Spiderman or Batman and refusing to reprint any of it?

At this point (if not before) I have zero interest in anything WOTC publishes, I haven't been interested in WOTC products since the end of 2E, and all the best stuff published the last 12 years was all 3rd party anyway (Kenzer, Goodman Games, Necromancer, etc).   Their 5E has as much pop for me as a single soap bubble.

They do seem intent on operating on an outdated business model.  Perhaps, they consider themselves above the guerilla marketing of a Kickstarter project and the like.  OR, it is possible that the money works for them to keep operating as they are/have.

That's about as old-school as it gets... I'll be reading through it at lunch today - can't wait!

I think the playtest sign-up is still available at WOTC's site.

Hey David,

I did the same thing and downloaded it today.
Was nice to see the old map back on the last page.

Haven't started to read through it yet.

Best regards,
Ronald

I downloaded the playtest material and looked it over last night.  I haven't dug deep into it yet, but my first impression is that it's a mixture of 3.5 and 4th edition leaning more heavily towards 3.5.  There's a remark on the pregen character sheets 'for a more old school experience ignore the background and theme sections' or something to that effect.  This dumps feats and skills, but the basic class and race features don't align with AD&D.  There's information on leveling the characters up that describes features that have a distinct 4e feel to me, but it's not clear if these are class features or if they're related to the background and theme.

OK. Apparently I'm allowed to discuss the new rules as long as I don't quote anything verbatim, post any pictures or upload video of me playing the game. So, here we go.

First off, this is barely an RPG. The packet was small, the rules are SUPER light, so far. Honestly, I was going to run a playtest group, but, there really isn't much to playtest. Let's hit some bulletpoints:

Same dice.
Same stats.
Spells are IN, powers are OUT.
No feats.

Where do I start digging deeper? Hmmm. First off, they are barely rules. Seriously. Was like, 30 pages. I chalk this up to a first time playtest and they want to keep it simple and get some basic feedback. PC creation looks about the same. Spells are back! You actually memorize spells and cast spells and normal stuff like that. What they did change is cantrips/orisons. Now you get certain essentially zero level spells that you can cast as much as you like. So, when your wizard gets done casting his two sleep spells, you have magic missile or burning hands to fall back on. That simple way to keep everyone useful longer in the game is excellent IMHO. You still get the 4E version of "resting" with a short rest and a long rest. No healing surges, you gotta cast heal spells.

Powers look like they are gone. Now it's "swing your longsword for d8 damage" and that's it. I'm not going to say feats are gone because they allude to them with the way certain math interacts and stuff. Weapon proficiencies and stuff like that. Skills are going to be here, they reference them, just no lists or explanations quite yet. Everything is stat based. EVERYTHING. Also, they try to "empower" the DM by "allowing" them to make all sorts of rules calls on the fly, which, I've been doing for decades now but apparently nobody else has

Here's my final thoughts. First off, these rules are FAR too light to really make any kind of judgement on how good it is or anything. It's just basic, basic, framework rules so far. Furthermore, I think, from reading these early rules, that they will go with a layered approach. It seems like it would be easy to say "no feats, no skills" then add a layer of skill checks, say, then add a layer of feats. Then add a layer of I dunno....whatever other layers they want to add on. So, you could go with just the plain pizza, but, if you add 7 toppings, it's still a pizza, but now it's YOUR pizza.

Any questions? Ask away.

P.S. To JasonZ, you've been hearing wrong. HP for players is up from 1st Ed, obviously (the lvl 1 pregen wizard has 18 hp) but I never thought having 3 hp was fun. YMMV. Monsters do have ability scores, and it would be very easy to "layer" on HD for monsters. PCs already have them. No feats (yet) and definitely no healing surges. It's like 1E in that it can be VERY rules light, I think was what they were going for.

Zen, AD&D was my pizza 30+ years ago. It was a basic framework that a DM could develop with houserules into anything he wanted. What you are talking about is a framework that boosts powers from the start, changes many fundamental mechanics of the game (AD&D) and is much more akin to the 3.X system than AD&D.

If you want more spells and more HP with AD&D you start players off at 3rd level, but the nature of the AD&D game is this low level experience. The process of gaining power and the threat of imminent demise is a wonderful experience for players. I don't think I have heard incorrectly, but all the pro opinions about this playtest are coming from 3.X players and all the negatives from AD&D/D&D so far.

I have no desire to have stats for every monster so that they can do various saving throws. I don't want to 'layer' on their HD, it is part of the crust of my game. I do not want green eggs and ham or to have magic-users cast Magic Missile and Light as at will powers. I do not want a magic user that starts at 18hp. These are basics. I have no desire for a skill based game, or having everyone be able to pick locks or remove traps. I don't need a game to 'empower' me as a DM. And this is the 30page rules-light version.

After getting a chance to go through the playtest rules there is a movement of Old School Gamers to pick up the DCCRPG and give that a try instead. I also liked the pro 5e posts that were happy to give the finger to the 4e players. Who do they think is going to buy this system? I don't think it is the AD&D players out there or the people who have gone over to Pathfinder.

I don't think I've heard wrong or been read parts of the playtest differently. I just think their are different outlooks as to what form the basics of the game and what do not. The basic form isn't AD&D to me, so for me it is a failure. Your mileage will no doubt vary.

It's an okay RPG, where I can point and say, "Oh look at that rule, there's Mike."  "Oh and that one, there's Monte."  But when I ask "Where's Dave?" "Where's Gary?" "Where's Mr. Holmes?" I really don't see my heroes in this current work.  And when I think about how I want my published game of choice to reflect a love and appreciation for the pulp classics and to show heartfelt experience with classic D&D, I'm drawn more and more away from 5E and toward the Dungeon Crawl Classics.

I'm okay with that, I was just really looking forward to "my" game being the default in-publication D&D again.  It's nice to have that connection with people.  But that isn't what this game is.  It's another custom Wizards game with their Dungeons & Dragons branding on it to sell copies.  I think it's better than 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, but it's certainly no Pathfinder, and honor for the past at WotC left the building when Adkison went away.  I don't think 5E is going to be the great reunifier that we were hoping for, although I will watch what happens with licensing and open gaming options.

My last glimmer of hope for 5E is that in their quest to reach out to all play styles, they might sell legal PDFs of their 40 years of treasures once again.  But that's about it and I'm not holding out much hope for that.

Conversing about 5E playtests with the people who are happy about it feels like talking about Raiders with people who have only seen Crystal Skull, or people who prefer the prequel trilogy to Empire Strikes Back.  The generation gap looms wide.  I am finding that some 2E devotees like 5E so far though.

Oh well.  I'll be sticking with AD&D, Moldvay, Mentzer, WoW (that's my touchstone to the younger) and picking up DCC.  It's good to live in a world with that many options though.  8)

The character stats for monsters was both the bane and brilliance of 3.0/3.5.

Monsters were customizable and the rules could be used to create doubt and danger in player minds.

Stat blocks were also impossibly long and monster modifications had to make game mechanics sense....so no more giant rats that were just a bit more giant than the other giants, "Because I said so."
