I think Foul is trying out a new version of the site. Why else would he "bump" such a thread? Gotta say though, I like the way it looks.

Gah! The secret forum revealed!

Actually, it's not that big a deal. Yep, I've been working on a new forum version for a while now (since last April, in fact). Nope, it's not ready yet. I haven't publicized it because it will just generate all sorts of support nonsense. ("How come I can't reply to this topic?" "Why has my avatar been changed to a lemur?", etc).

I guess I didn't anticipate that by bumping a topic that someone was watching, they'd get a notification e-mail about it. Heh.

I removed the links folks had posted above, because I don't want Google in there spidering it. Will cause all sorts of chaos. If you'd like to visit to check things out, feel free: the address is the same as this forum, just add an "s" on to the end of "forum".

As a further reminder -- the forum is beta, nothing on there is permanent (it's actually using a forum image from last April) -- and when it goes live, it will go live at this current web address, so no bookmarks will break. Please feel free to screw around on it, just don't bother me with bug reports, there'll be time for that later.

Woah. Too loud. Gotta say I prefer the visually uncluttered simplicity of the current design. Acaeum is a peaceful place to visit and spend time, and the new presentation will change that image and feel. Just my 2c.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

If it were only that simple!

The forum itself doesn't have any site ID / keywords associated with it. The main site has meta tags, though "game" is not one of them! I'm not even really sure how sites end up on blacklists with firewalls, though I've certainly noticed The Acaeum is blocked by my work, too.

Before I was on the home front, I used to be in charge of Internet filtering/monitoring for my employer. It's more or less like this...

The software your company's IT department uses (we used "SurfControl") comes with a library of DNS entries/domain names that are associated with various categories (like gaming) which are updated periodically, sort of like antivirus s/w continually updates virus definitions. Your friendly IT staff member also has the ability to modify these manually.

In my situation (I worked for a casino), the problem was that we wanted various marketing types and executives to have access to gaming (i.e., gambling) sites, for a variety of reasons including looking in on the competition, buying gaming-related supplies and products, etc. It was a constant struggle to make sure that our people did have access to gaming sites.

Your company likely is trying to do the opposite (i.e., prevent you from playing Internet poker at work

). If the company's policy is otherwise liberal with regards to Internet usage, that is, if they don't mind you checking Facebook and stuff like that, you might be able to formally request (or ask the person in charge of that on the sly) that acaeum.com be recategorized or individually allowed for you. It's a long shot, but worth a try. Just keep in mind if you get the Internet flunky to do this, that your activity still shows up on the usage report that your boss reads...

Their policy is simply to block Internet gaming/gambling, and they have to block FB because of all the potential viruses and malware.

They're actually very easy going in general, and actually trust us to be adults, which is refreshing as hell.

Besides, I can play Internet poker from my phone ;-)

Facebook also comes up as a gaming site (Farmville, etc.). Yeah, they probably wouldn't be willing to unblock one site, especially if it's not work-related.

They shouldn't trust you (not you specifically, employees in general). When I was doing usage reporting for the casino, some of the stuff that came out was just astounding. People spending 5 hours of their 8-hour workday surfing work-unrelated sites, surfing porn, posting porn (yeah, we had ones salesman who was a photographer...), etc. etc. All of this despite the fact that the employee handbook laid out the ground rules pretty clearly. I hated that part of my job...

It's mindblowing how much time some people waste while they are at work. It's also astonishing what some companies will let their employees get away with.

One of the companies I worked for years ago was a hotelier. We did a pretty good job of locking down the firewall so people couldnt surf the naughty stuff. But I started working for them around the time Napster had gotten huge and we would catch people all the time downloading mp3 files using it and other P2P applications. Every once in awhile we would do a sweep of our file servers and find a huge chunk of space taken up. It was almost always mp3 files sitting in someones personal directory. So we would "appropriate" the files and leave a text message that said something like "stop downloading music: sincerely, the IT and HR departments".

The last company I worked for was a large commercial insurance company. We had no restrictions on our firewall because we insured other companies and had to be able to access pretty much everything. The internet usage rules were there but the bigwigs didnt care what people did and human resources had zero power. I probably spent 75% of my time cleaning viruses and malware due to improper internet usage.

We only have about 200 employees. Maybe size is a factor. I dunno.

But you are quite right: They really should not allow us as much latitude as they do. it doesn't make good business sense.

Four or 5 is a lot over the course of 8 years for a 200-employee company, IMO. There are lots of measures that can be taken before going that far.. Like threatening to fire

Not good if the employees are seeing their time at work online as an interactive experience, especially in cubicleland.
