If you have the option, try a small local bank or credit union. Unless you really need the services provided by a huge bank, a small bank will probably cause you less grief. I've never had an issue at my local bank that wasn't able to be resolved very quickly.

And I agree on credit cards too - having one is almost certainly necessary, but more is probably not.

Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

Credit card free for a long while now. I'm in the process of dumping my bank for a credit union my fiance uses. Every time I've been there and any phone calls I've made or they have to me have been a culture shock of how nice they are.

On the "bank" topic.

My wife and I are going through similar scenarios but with our mortgage and the Obama mortgage modification program: "Making Home Affordable" plan. It's a shame because the banks have no interest in helping anybody and are doing what they can to obfuscate and block the plan. And of course the government is not holding them accountable. Basically the NYC teachers union and a few others are threatening to take their pensions out of the big banks.

In general we should be moving our money out of the "big" banks and into smaller savings banks and credit unions. Especially Banks that have no connection with the Fed.

The banks are crooks... almost all of them and especially the "big" five. They profit from jiggered debit dates, stacking the cards in their favor to manipulate overdraft fees.

If any of you suffer from this kind of bullshit just do a quick search in your area for a class action suit... there are many. And please consider moving your money over to a local Credit Union. Fuck these assholes!

She is great... And she's put in too much of her (and our) time dealing with these pricks at Bank of America.

We've hear similar reports from people with mortgages with Chase. They get the runaround for months and then if they do actually get "approved" after the "trial period", they then have to pay the deferred interest as a lump, often forcing them to default. It's a shill game... as I'm sure the banks have projected this very thing and have insurance out on all of these foreclosures; Where it's cheaper for them to just let us tank than to pay staff and administer programs to help folks out... even though the stipulation for the bailout money was that they have to help people.

I call bullshit.

I urge all of you to find a nice local credit union and pull your money from Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Wachovia...

Entirely OT to the current OT thread, but in a kind of appeal to killjoy and our Scottish members, my friends and I are walking/climbing the 3 peaks next May and could do with some weather advice on Ben Nevis? Seems inclement at best and typically windy, foggy and snowy, so just wondered if there's any firsthand advice.
Its the 1 mountain thats giving me the willys...

Where we live, its about 20 miles north of Southampton, so we're at the bottom of the country. Driving round trip is about 1250 miles, about 5hrs drive between each mountain, after the initial 10hrs to Nevis!
Its going to be a challenge, albeit doing it over a long weekend!

I dont have the exact heights, but Nevis is the biggest, Scafell the smallest (but hardest apparently) with each one taking around 4hrs up, 2hrs down... So 6hrs walking, 5 driving each day. Seemed like a good idea at the time!

Although, as with most things, there is a wealth of conflicting info on the Interweb, some saying 5 hrs, some 3, some saying 40mph winds, mist, snow, others saying sun.
First hand, trusted experience would be handy

Back to the OT part of this thread, the credit union we use will close out credit cards for us.
Actually, they need the money first, which is annoying, but ...

We had a Chase credit card and our credit union did all the dirty work: paying it off, handling their red tape, talking to customer service in Indonesia, etc.

Now Chase wants me to re-apply of course.
I'm tempted to mail empty postage-paid envelopes back to them just to f*** with them.

Back in my youth I used to do a bit of mountain hiking and moderate climbing up in Colorado but nowadays I just do the camping bit. Every once in a while I still get the urge to hike so I do the next best thing and check out other people's trip reports and photos. This website has a crapload of information including weather, pictures, best trails for experts and beginners, climbing tips, etc.

Ben Nevis is the biggest?

Aren't the Cambrians (including Snowdon) the tallest peaks in the British Isles?

As I understand it, these are more like hiking trips than mountain climbing (which would involve ropes, pitons and the like). Right?
