Damn you, Kingofpain, I told you that that is not to be spoken of again.  Besides paying $265 for a print of two dragons that goes for $35 on the exhibit floor should not be catagorized as a bonehead play.  It should be catagorized as an unbelieveably generous donation to charity.

Yeah, Lawrenson, you want me in your booth I overpay for everything.

(Damn that was the worst purchase of my life).

One of the most popular Gencon events has been cancelled:

World Series Of Gen Con Poker -- Cancelled

It is with regret that we inform you the World Series of Gen Con Poker event has been cancelled for Gen Con Indy 2008.

While all aspects of the event were in full swing and, as in years past was believed to be working well within the law, we were contacted in late May by the Indiana Gaming Commission questioning the legality of the event. Unbeknownst to Gen Con LLC and the company contracted to run the event, earlier this year the Indiana Gaming Commission formed a task force whose purpose is to shut down poker tournaments. Weeks of conversation and negotiations yielded nothing except the knowledge that unless the tournament was completely free and offered no prizes it would be shut down and anyone involved would face prosecution.

Needless to say, Gen Con LLC had no choice but to cancel the event for this year.

We will begin processing refunds to the players who have pre-registered for the event and hope to have that process completed prior to the show. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Customer Service while onsite.

Really?  It was popular?  Wow...never would have expected that.  Yet the Spam carving competition will still likely be held.  Go figure.

There would be a hell of a fight if they cancelled the spam carving event.  I look forward to it every year.  No one walks by that table without stopping.  Some even vomit.  Great memories.  8O

Now, if the contestants had to EAT the Spam after they carved it, THAT would be a contest....sort of like Survivor!

The Empyreal realm of King John IV is threatened by an advance of evil forces from the southlands. The Dwarves of Krazandol are debating whether to sever ties with the humans, and the Elves of Breem and Elt are having similar discussions.

NEWS FLASH --

A recent Major Clash between groups of armed Elves and Dwarves has occurred south of Empyrea, along the riverside by the central Ruling River. This recent battle took place just north of Woodstown, the southern-most Castle City, which will doubtless be at the forefront of the impending war with Evil. Woodstown city officials fear that this matter may escalate.

Other lesser demihuman confrontations have occurred this week in the Castle Cities of Dorin (on the northwest coast) and Outland (the eastern borderland).

At this crucial time when the evil armies are moving north,
what will the peoples of the Realm do
if these non-evil demihuman groups also take up armed conflict?

Stay tuned for more news from Empyrea...

Oh yeah.  I wouldn't trust a stinking Dwarf any further than I could toss one. :)

As the person who came in second place for the opportunity to make this unbelievably generous donation . . . thanks, and sorry.

And for lawrenson and others plying the mercantile trade at GenCon, I can undoubtedly also be relied upon to pay way too much for whatever nice shiny things cross my path.

Don't tell me the elves are going into elf-denial that the evil forces encroaching from the south won't bother them...

(Elves are just tight-wearing nancy-boy humans that got their ears caught in a mechanical rice picking machine anyways.. )

The dwarves will handle this army of evil while the nancy elves fritter about eating nuts and berries and hugging trees.  The humans can tag along if they like, but no half-elves!

NEWS UPDATE

Gorvale, autumn 234 JR*: An Orc Army led by "Graatch the Invulnerable" has overrun the Castle City of Gorvale. Although the city is now considered Lost, casualties are slight due to fast action by the royal family. Prince Andri of Gorvale (youngest son of King John IV and his elven wife Queen Nuana) is unharmed and has arrived in Empyrea with his senior staff.

Prince Andri was successful in identifying the oncoming forces and evaluating their unstoppable numbers several days before they reached the city. It seems that he immediately contacted Queen Nuana in Empyrea, who arranged the assistance of a multitude of elves from nearby Breem in evacuating most of the people of Gorvale. The bulk of that population is now en route to Fair Passage, Johnstown, and Empyrea under elven guard.

Queen Nuana has expressed her heartfelt thanks to her people for assisting their neighbors in their narrow escape. King John has also added his thanks on behalf of the humans in the Realm. Both have also stated their hopes that these actions and proclamations may alleviate some of the growing anti-elf sentiments.

Unconfirmed sources claim that Graatch has renamed the city "Orcun".

May I add my congratulations to the Elven race on such expertise at running away.

::snicker::

Malc also pointed out that Krazandol is displayed on the map.

In that respect, the map is correct to within 40 miles (2 hexes)... and "Big K" is entirely underground anyhow.

So no worries, mate.

"Multitude" of assistance is a misnomer. I think we sent one, who was ably equipped to both lead the queen to safety and hold off the orc horde. Our motto: One riot, one ranger (half elf, that is)*

*With apologies to the motto of the Texas Rangers....

BTW, where were the dwarves?  Sources say they may have been laying around in a drunken stupor, as their kind is apt to do so as to help deal with the fact of looking in the mirror daily and seeing their dirty, smelly, hairy mule like faces......

"dirty, smelly, hairy mule like faces......" the dwarves would rather be thought of as ugly than pretty which is what the elves are.  No wonder their race is dying out.  The males are apt to think of other males as better to look at then the females.  Stupid elves.  However, a dwarf gives credit where credit is due:  they sure run away from a fight well.

Update on PCs:

Sorry for the delay* in character info. Some questions arose during character creation, easily clarified & resolved.

I've disallowed multiple request for most Rods, the Helm of Brilliance, and other superpowerful items. But I AM allowing Girdle of gStr. but minimized (Hill Gt, Str 19), and elves MAY have Elven Chain (+2) for armor (an exception, since it's from UA, but whatthehell).

Please note that magical Gauntlets & Girdles confer specific Strength scores. These do not give a "plus something"; they give the specified Str, exactly. They thus do not stack; the higher of two will apply.

Now, if you're a fighter (or part-fighter) and want Super Strength (instead of choosing a gadget for it):

18 points in character creation gets you to the 18/01-50 category (per PH).
Each additional point invested pushes you up one notch, to the minimum. Thus:
19 pts --> 18/51, 20 --> 18/76, 21 --> 18/91, 22 --> 18/00.
That'll probably leave you rather low on charisma or something, but dem's da brakes.
Minimum ability score is 3 (tho this may be ruled out by other btb restrictions).

Feel free to post or email other questions.

More Event Updates to come. Those will conclude by thus Sunday 8/10, since some of you are flying in from afar and I don't want to force you to read this junk instead of packing...

I expect to be onsite by Wednesday afternoon 8/13, in plenty of time for the dinner. (I hope that's still on; if not, somebody email me.)

* If you hadn't heard... I run a bakery in a northwoods summer resort area. We're crazy busy at the moment, and we're also trying to sell the place.
