Mike B, get the Cowboys off of your list and I agree with you completely!
The Vikings? Don't bring that weak sauce in here. That is one huge joke of a franchise that will continue to be a joke until they win a big game someday

True about the big game. As far as putting a "good" team on the field year after year they're pretty consistent. I'm not a fan of them either, tough team to best against though (day in/day out) regular season wise. Unlike the Cowboys I should say;)

aw, come on Mike, my love for the Vikings can't be swayed by your facts and considerable knowledge on the subect!  :)

I just loved them as a kid and I know they were typically division runners up against the Bears (mid-80's?? IIRC) but when Moon was throwing for them a few years back they were doing ok, weren't they?  :?

Anyway, might be a European thing, but they have the best helmets!

The Giants? They are about as exciting and interesting as dirt. Eli Manning, their sour faced coach, and their group of no-names are not what fame and fortune are made of. No one out there, even sports fans, can name three players on that team (not saying they are not good, they are, but they have zero marketability). Plus, along with the Steelers, their last two superbowl winners were the weakest SB winners in history.  The Jets? They haven't been relevant since Broadway Joe.  Who else?

According to Forbes, The Giants Football team is worth 1.2 Billion.
The Cowboys are worth 1.7 Billion.  Not much more.

The Co-Owners of the NY Giants, Mr. Mara and Mr. Tisch, are worth about 3 billion dollars.

That sour faced coach and bunch of no names did pretty well against the Cowboys in that shiny new stadium.  That's not a good sign for a team that just spent a huge fortune on a 100,000 seat soccer pitch.

Gonna be alot of empty, expensive seats in there if that's the best product Jerry can put out there.  Dallas is not Detroit.  Texans are not gonna keep buying tickets and jerseys if the team blows year in and year out.

Unless they start winning big in a hurry, I predict a fire sale, bankruptcy or pleas for big subsidies from the municipal authorities to keep the team in Dallas within 10 years.

Cmon guys I understand the partisan "Cowboy hatah" stuff, but use the head in your helmets.  #1, this stadium will sell out straight for 10 years no matter how bad the product is.  #2, it won't be that bad...this team should go 9-7, 10-6 for the next few years with Romo at QB. Don't over react to one bad game, Eli has had plenty...Brady just stunk up the room this weekend and no one is saying it's over for the Pats. You guys are starting to sound like Eagle's fans on Monday mornings, if you haven't ever done so it's hilarious, tune in online to the WHIP or whatever their hometonw station is after they lose. Every caller wants to fire the coach, trade McNabb, get rid of all the players, etc. Then when they beat the Cowboys, that team is going to the superbowl    Dumbest fans EVER. Don't fall into the trap.

The stadium is a spectacle in itself. You think Jerry is going to let games get blacked out so he can be sneered at on national TV? The stadium is already 90% sold out for every game in perpetuity due to seat liscenses...he only has to worry about the other 10% (or 10 thousand seats) for the other games.. Lowering the $100 tickets to $70, boom, he's sold them all. There's not a chance in hell this will lead to anything other than Mo money, mo money for Jerry and company.

(Plus, the dirty little secret of the stadium? The configuraton can be changed from 100,000 seats back to 80,000 seats given a few days notice....so even if it gets close, Jerry just has to drop the seat total back to 80k, and they are "sold out" on paper).

The stadium is a money bank. It's not all about the Cowboys...they have already hosted half a dozen sold out concerts (Paul McCartney, U2, some County b.s., etc). They are hosting some major college games in the next few years (Texas/OU, etc).  They have already hosted a soccer event that filled the stadium (damned if I know what it is, soccer isn't my bag).  They are hosting the NBA all star game, and then the superbowl.  Does that sound like Jerry is going to be begging in the streets any day now? Use your noggins.

The trick will be for the NY football teams to follow suit. I'm predicting trouble, because you are dealing with two different owners, two different organizations, that have not always seen eye to eye.  Texas Stadium was one man's vision and he paid the extra millions to get it done when costs overran.  The new Yankee stadium..man that is the most successful franchise in sports history, how was that not going to get built?  Even then it took forever.  The Giants and Jets? First, neither are as beloved as the Yankees and Cowboys are to their areas, despite the Giants winning a SB. As I said before, no pizzazz with robot Eli, the sour faced coach, and a team of no names. The Jets might have gotten the pizzazz back with Sanchez, but he has to win something first.  Then you are dealing with the notorious roadbloack of entities up there in the NE (no union was in Jerry's way here). Don't forget 10 years after 9/11 they are still fighting up there for the rebuilding/memorial, its a mess to get anything done, which is why the stadium isn't as great as it should/could of been.

The new Meadowlands stadium will be the 3rd largest (not even able to hold 100,000 people), won't have a roof (so no indoor events like concerts, NBA, etc), no Final Four, and more importantly, no Superbowl.  All that means is it will never be worth more than the Texas Stadium that can host all those events. You guys will be staring up at Jerry's masterpiece even after that aluminum-siding monstrosity is finally built in the Jersey swamp.

The best "Dynasty" years doesn't have your best QB.
The 70's Steelers were just loaded with HOF players.
80's 49'ers were better.
2000 Patriots not as good. Better coached but lesser players.
I think the 90's Dallas Dynasty is tied for 3rd cause Pats dynasty had another Superbowl run.
Elways 90's Broncos get an honerable mention too.
Raiders were good over many years. They were called the "team of the decades" but got bad in the 90's-present asides from that short run.
How about the Browns?
1)Steelers
2)Packers
3) tie: Cowboys/49'ers = Superbowl wins. West Coast offense changed the game.
49'ers also have 2 HOF quarterbacks from that dominating run. Also knocked the Cowboys from relevance in the 80's with "The catch".

I'm not a Cowboys fan by the way, could you tell

AS for storied franchises:

My knocks on the Cowboys are: They aren't a good team now.

Neither are the Raiders or Packers. It's not a snapshot of one era, it's dominance and relevance across generations.

I just do not think that this team today will advance to a Superbowl.

Neither will every other team in the league but two. Even then the Cowboys have five trophies on their wall in 8 appearances over 40 years. Pretty impressive.

It has been this way for over 1 decade now.

Yep, they have had the longest playoff drought in their history. Not winning drought, cause they've had a winning record the last few years (unlike the Raiders, for example), and have been to the playoffs five times during that period...it's not like they were going 3-13 all those years (just the three years under Dave Campo).

They talk a lot better game than they play... you have to admit.

So do most teams. Irrelevant to the discussion.

The best "Dynasty" years doesn't have your best QB.

They had two dynastys, with two HOF QBs (Staubach and Aikman).

The 70's Steelers were just loaded with HOF players.

Irrelevant as every Steeler who touched a uniform back in the 70s made  it in due to a documented East coast bias. The Cowboys have been catching up the last few years with the inductions of Bob Hayes and Rayfield Wright. Drew Pearson not being in is criminal. But cmon, how many HOFers do the Steelers have on their roster now? If you say "Big Ben", you lose. He's the worst statistical QB ever to win a SB (having said that I love the guy, but still...)

80's 49'ers were better.

For one decade. How have they been rolling since 1994? Or before 1979?

2000 Patriots not as good. Better coached but lesser players.

Plus they've only done it for less than a decade (despite going to superbowls in the 80s and 90s).  If they can keep it going after Brady, you'll have to consider them with the all time great franchises.

I think the 90's Dallas Dynasty is tied for 3rd cause Pats dynasty had another Superbowl run.

Bah, the Cowboys would have won four in a row in the 90s if not for the fact the 49s had a team of amazing proportions going up against the Boys all through the 90s.  It was no mistake that the "Superbowl" those years was a joke, as everyone knew the real superbowl was the NFC championship game those years (Cowboys vs 49s for three, then Cowboys vs Packers).  Not to say the Pats titles were a mirage, but check out who they were playing in their divison every year (Miami, Bills, Jets) and who the Cowboys were playing in their division every year (Redskins, Giants and Eagels). No comparison.  The Pats were gifted at least six wins every year of their superbowl runs, while the Boys had to fight every game along the way.

Elways 90's Broncos get an honerable mention too.

Not really. Terrell Davis should get an honorable mention. Even Elway had the good sense to retire after Davis was hurt, because without him that organization would still be ringless. How good have they been afterwards?

Raiders were good over many years. They were called the "team of the decades" but got bad in the 90's-present asides from that short run.

They haven't been relevant (except to gangstas buying their apparel) in 20 years. Al Davis' presence alone hurts the inclusion of that franchise in any list.

How about the Browns?

Giggle.

1)Steelers
2)Packers
3) tie: Cowboys/49'ers = Superbowl wins. West Coast offense changed the game.
49'ers also have 2 HOF quarterbacks from that dominating run. Also knocked the Cowboys from relevance in the 80's with "The catch".

Teh 49s were the definitive team of the 80s, you can't take that away from them. But have you seen their history prior to Joe Montana? Cowboys more relevant than the 49s due to more superbowls and dominance in the big games through the 90s (two NFC championships won vs 1 for the 49s) and 20 game winning streak/18 year playoff streak in the 60s-70s-80s.  But I don't have a problem putting Steelers and Packers first if you take into account the Packers accomplishments in the pre-superbowl era (which, btw, I look at very jaundiced since there were only 8-10 teams in the entire league when they won most of their "championships" back then.  When you have a 10% chance of winning every year just for showing up, that's not necessarily a badge of honor)

I'm not a Cowboys fan by the way, could you tell [/

That hurts your point, though  :D
Cowboys make the list.

Why for the love of God does the Superbowl have to be played in a domed stadium?

What happened to playing in winter in the snow?

Just ranting...

The superbowl does not have to be played in a domed stadium unless they changed rule from 2 years ago when the greatest team in the history of the NFL won the superbowl in what is now called "Landshark Stadium".  "Landshark" does not have a roof.

Relax Mike - don't get your panties in a bunch, I know the Colts were damn lucky to have won that SB.

Greatest squad in NFL history....

I'll take either of the first two Cowboys Super Bowl squads from the 1990's.  I am confident of them beating any other all-time squad.

This is fun!

Let's talk trash about another team!  I suggest either the Steelers or Green Bay.   (New England is too easy.)

Anyone?

Because the musical guest might get rain on their head, boo hooooooo...which is exactly what did happen two years ago in Miami!

(Realistically, when the superbowl stopped being about the game itself and about the surrounding hoopla, the NFL was going to take every effort to make the spectacle "managable".  I bet domed stadiums more often than not are going to be getting the nod for Superbowls in the wake of that drenching the richie richs put up with that year).

And Martin, I have only one thing to say about the Colts victory...Sexy Rexy Grossman.  You guys better have won!!!

No particular order;

Bears 1985, Packers 1996, Cowboys 1992 and 93, 49s 1989, Steelers 1978....I base these picks on not only the record of the teams, but the margin of victory and ease of beating their opponents through the season, future Hall of Famers on the squad, and their march through the playoffs and a superbowl victory (in the case of the '78 Steelers, a SB victory over arguably the other best team of the year, the Dallas Cowboys).    You could make a case for the 2007 Pats (undefeated season) but they didn't close the deal in the SB. You could also make a case for one of the Bills teams of the 1991-1994 era, they did go to 4 straight superbowls, but against much reduced competition in the AFC, and they never won one.

I didn't include a lot of teams from the 60s and 70s in my thoughts because if you look at great teams like Lombardi's Packers of the 60s, one shocking fact becomes clear: They would be demolished on the field by the worst team in the NFL in this era. The reason: the HEAVIEST player on the Packers in those days would weigh about 250-275 lbs; today, you rarely have linemen under 300 lbs, or anyone (including the punters and kicers) under 200 lbs. In the Lombardi era it was not unusual to have linemen weigh in at 180-200 lbs; they would be crushed like toothpicks against, say even a squad as inept as the Tampa Bay Buccs. Could you imagine a line of 200-250 lbs defensive lineman trying to hold back the running back tandem of Carnell Williams and Derrick Ward? The Buccs wouldn't even have to attempt a pass, it would be 49-0 by halftime, and the Packers would have half the team on the bench due to injury. Speed kills, but so does size....!

Mike,

I think your picks are the result of having actually witnessed those teams in action.  Of course we cannot compare them head to head anymore than we can compare the college teams of today against the college teams of yesterday.  The picks you made you "saw" with your own eyes rather than take someone's evaluations of a team you may have only seen highlights from.

I forgot about the 1985 Bears - I would put them up there with the '72 Dolphins.
