It's a common business practice called "Taking another bite from the same apple". The phrase is more commonly used in music, where artists put out "best of" CD's, then the "newly remastered best of" CD's, then "really new and released cd's with a new single never-found track" ...

I would agree with you in the sense that they are cashing in for this reason.

My understanding is that modules don't sell.  "If" they do, it's to 1/4, or less of the market, i.e., only DM's buy 'em.  Basically, anything aimed at the DM doesn't sell.  At least not well enough for their model.  The retro/return to's are as good as we're gonna see from WotC.  It's the basic reason for the OGL.  Let the other dudes gamble is their business model.  Whether I agree with the model, or not, is irrelevant.  


Please, no edition wars are warranted, or welcome.  So long as I can kill things and take their stuff, it's still D&D to me.

About as rare as those Ultra rare TSR 2nd Edition Dieties and Demigods with Cthulhu in them, though those new 4E modules seem to sell for a bit more.

It's the same whenever a "new" collectible becomes available....first few copies sell quite a bit, then the price comes down to reality.  I think we are seeing a bit of that right now, prices should adjust in the next couple weeks and we'll see what this starts selling for after the diehards get their copies.

Well, I am a new member of the RGPA so I think I missed the boat on this one, in any case, this is one of my all time favorite original modules (lots of memories with my old HS gaming group in the 80s doing the Temple of Elemental Evil... so, I'm going to have to pick up a copy of this at some point... Wish me luck.

As much as I'd love to "have it now!"  I am going to hold off, monitor ebay and get a feel for when the prices level off. I don't mind waiting a few weeks or even months, but this is one that I just have to have for sure.

I've never even considered looking at 4E, but T1 did peek my interest. Has anyone played 4E? I really thought 3/3.5E was horrific. Is 4E any better?

Just the early adopters who are willing to pay big $.
Don't expect these to be worth more that 10$.

If the rule set sucks, there's not much left of the game to praise. That pretty much seems to be the general consenus on the internet. And WoTC are trying to sue some guy for distributing 4E in PDF?! WTF! You'd think the more people they could get their rules to, the more likely they are to find people to play their game. When a product gets so bad the RPG community is shunning it, and you've already screwed all your supporting 3rd Party Publishers by forcing them to ditch your old system, then you really need to be giving your rules away for free and hope people will buy books and adventures on the back of it.

I bet Goodman Games and the likes are seriously regretting pulling out of the RPG market and buying into WoTC's inhouse fantasy. I note they've had to diversify into other non-fantasy products more heavily, as I expect they now know they made a serious miscalculation and are suffering because of it. GG may well go the way of the dinosaur if they can't find a way to break their license and start publishing things people want to buy. Was a time I was spending $100 a month on GG products., and $50 a moth on the electronic releases on top of that. Now I don't even bother to watch what they're up to because I know they won't be writing anything I can spend money on.
