The party of adventurers rounded a curve in the road when they spotted a lone figure atop a low hill in the distance. Dressed plainly and sporting a short white beard, the fatherly figure quietly watched the party come to a stop.

Instinctively, each member of the party silently raised an arm in acknowledgment. The kindly figure raised his in return and with a quit smile on his face, turned and departed over the hill. With a sadness in their hearts they couldn't quite explain, the adventures continued on.

I was wondering what kind of broadcast (TV/radio) media coverage this would get since he is the biggest name there ever will be in our hobby. I noticed no coverage on PBS Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and nothing on ABC News with Gibson. NPR had a nice obit (seemingly adapted from the AP newswire article) that they ran at the top of the hour with the day's news summary. I still can't believe he's gone...

Little or no airtime but many mentions online (the AP story) -- at CNN, ABC, CBS, others...

i'm still sat here genuinely choked up. man!

couldnt get onto the chat last night guys sorry...had stuff i needed to do

will get on at the weekend and hopefully we can talk then.

i've always took folk pretty much at face value - he truly was a really nice guy and i am immensely priveleged to have gotten to speak to him, albeit so briefly.

Are we nearly there yet?

I'm almost a newbie in the great world of RPG ... and I've listen about Gary only 4 or 5 years ago.
But ... I don't know ... I feel like I've lost one friend of mine.
And "friend" is a very important word, for me. Terribly important.

I agree with this one.

At least he did not go through the pain of seeing "his" game dismembered once again.

I'm so, so sad. In an email at the end of the 2007 he told me he was living "on borrowed time" and unfortunately time has run out. :cry:

It was a great privilege working with him for the Ultimate Gary Gygax Interview and getting permission to print his answers in my small print book, but it was a still bigger privilege being a (small) part of the phenomen he created so many years ago. Sigh... I'm gonna have a picture of him in the store for perpetuity.

Dear Friends,

Gary and I have known each other practically all of our adult lives, and I have always held great admiration for his achievements. Beginning in 1975, we worked with phone calls and handshakes, and there were no contracts or lawyers, but the industry grew up around us and other people changed things. Yet, he and I remained friends throughout all the years, so I wish to say goodbye to one of the Great Leaders and the Hero of our industry... E Gary Gygax.

I send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends in this time of shadow.

It's strange, of all the things that I want to say, nothing seems quite appropriate or cover everything I feel.

All I know is, for someone I never met, he has had an important part in not just my life, but in a number of my friends' as well.

To me, the final moments in the Futurama episode encapsulates it best.

Deepest condolences to his wife, family and friends.

I heard the sad news on NPR last night. It got me thinking about how gaming has affected my life. It's odd how something so seemingly inocuous can, over time, have a profound impact. For me, gaming isindirectly indirectly responsible for me having met my wife, and getting my last two jobs. (Long story, involving friends from gaming, etc.)

I believe it's a pun about rolling dice. Not sure if it is meant as a comment on 4E.
