I've been painting the Reaper Demogorgon for a few months now, on and off.  It's been quite fun, and is a challenging figure, given all of the different textures (hair, scales, suckers, etc.)

Sorry for the delay in the reply but I've been chatting with some folk on production of a few figures going into private hands. So here I go:

In answer to a couple of different users questions, right now the main contender is the Pumpkin Headed Bugbear or Jack O' Bear. It is not a front runner from a personal perspective but more the general response of, 'Yeah I'd buy that.'. Most of the suggestions have been fantastic, and in terms of production reality especially benjoshua's:

I fully expect you to make some figures just because they pay the bills. Because, if you don't make the money-makers, you are likely not going to be able to make what we request over a long period of time. And while there is significant overlap, it's rarely always that way.


The Collector's Trove also had some great comments, and expressed a concern of not going down the same old path of producing the popular miniatures (another axe bearing dwarf anyone?). I really cannot stress enough that I believe there is a win-win path here for everyone: Me to create miniatures you want, and for (part of) a living to be made.

There have been some great lists, started (I think) by The Collector's Trove and dremeled down by several other forum members. Here is the last I saw:

You can see the Jack O' Bear does not appear on (so I am still flexible on that front (although won't be past a committed to an illustrator to start putting together ideas for the sculpt (plus, again if anyone has scans of rule pages pertaining to the Jack O' Bear of its aliases please feel free to send them to me so I can get as accurate a brief of what he/she needs to look like)) but:

Slug, Giant (like the size of a small house as in the MM)


Could not be economically produced in low melt metal (I mean if the average 25mm figure represents and average (US) male height of 5' 10" and an average 1 floor small house is 20' x 25') as it would be 85mm x 107mm) but would be good in resin. Does that bother anyone in particular? Is the general expectation that figures would be played with unfinished / unpainted or have those days long passed?

I can't speak for everyone, but I have noticed two general trends:

1)  The old gamers here generally talk about painting their miniatures.  I have not heard them discuss unpainted miniatures as a bonus.

2)  Younger gamers seem to expect to buy pre-painted miniatures.

Throughout the 1990s I waited for this to happen. Toymakers, particularly for Star Wars, began producing some pretty nice minis, probably inspired by the popularity of wargaming. Inevitably it came full circle back to D&D.

I'll aways associate old school minis with unpainted globs of toxic metal.

I agree (in my own modest opinion). In fact I think that Paul's comment about wanting figures in a tactical position is a good one.

I haven't really garnered enough information on the Jack O' Bear to produce one so far. I'm wondering whether everyone is to busy to supply it or it just isn't available.

If you can't / won't copy 'n' paste or scan the pages from your various rulebooks pertaining to the Jack O' Bear then could you please just post a reference and I'll attempt to track down the various manuals.

It is a much longer process, but I do need to get as much information as possible to return an accurate representation.

RQ 1979 rulebook: Humanoid in shape, this strange creature has what seems to be a pumpkin for as head and an exotic talent not to be sneered at.
The jack o'bear can ensnare another's mind in a version of the Harmonize spell.. The victims..are frozen in place and helpless unless the jack o'bear dies..
Jack o'bears are basically Chaotic..
OTHER SKILLS-- Hide in Cover 50%; Move Quietly 50%.

Griffin Mountain, 1981: Gondo Holst..will attempt to lure player characters into his trap and then sacfifice them when they are helpless..In addition he keeps two jack o'bears on hand to assist him. The jack o'bears are intensely loyal (or as loyal as chaos things can be) to the Priest..He feeds them and takes care of them, approving of the things they do. They like that and will do what they can to help the man. Even if it means being cooped up in a wagon for several weeks. They know not to leave the wagon without Gondo's permission because of the special protection he puts on it.
