And here we have the missing handout!

One of my favorite games during NTRPGCON was the K&KA Social game.  Not only did we acquire the Gygax cup, but we killed both Dungeon Masters!   8O   In celebration of our victory, each player present was awarded with a boxed version of the adventure, pictured below:

Image

I separated the module cover from the booklet in the photo, a 28-page document.   The inside cover includes some nice maps and an adventure flow-chart. What a great reward!  :D   I read the adventure, and it appears that our party did well in solving many of the puzzles correctly and overcoming many of its monsters.  Of course, our party was composed of over twenty 6th through 8th level characters.  Frankly, if someone hadn't rolled for a random magic item with three wishes and used it to bypass the final exit, we likely would not have survived.  If I were running this adventure with a standard-sized party, say five to seven characters, their average level would need to be at least ninth level unless the "End Note" monster encounter is eliminated.

I enjoyed reading through this adventure and found it to be a quality publication.  The maps were detailed and placed near each room description for quick reference.  The artwork, while crude, was well-placed and enhanced its reading.  There were few typos.  It was an interesting adventure, and I'll treasure it in my collection.  I am now hoping for a K&KA Social game next year.

Finally, I couldn't help but notice that the adventure was labelled "KK2" which indicates there are possibly copies of "KK1" out there somewhere.  I am now curious about what it's like and about.   :?:

That was a module austinjimm ran in June 2015. Only a few copies distributed (grodog/tacojohn had one for sale at their booth this year for $100), but I should have a copy at home, so I'll take a look and post some pics tonight if I can find it. Here's a pic from EOTB in the meantime.

I'll confess that I purchased the KK1.  8O

I haven't actually had a chance to read it but as soon as I do, I'll post some notes. Would love KK2 if anyone is willing to part with one.  :)

About the con, I had a great time as usual. I didn't get a lot of time to socialize outside of games because I carried my son with me for his first gaming con. Many thanks to ExTSR for inspiring a future generation.

I loved seeing the members I bumped into and if I didn't see you or say hello, I hope to next year if not sooner. As always, an amazing job by the staff and a premier event if you can make it. Huge thanks go out for all the work and effort.

Hope your son had a good time! One thing I was very happy about was the amount of kids, and women, at the con. It looked like both numbers had doubled since last year.

Well, meant to do this a couple days ago but had to settle back into reality first……plus this is long…hopefully not too long ;)

Holy Shit….What a freaking amazing time I had at the Con! I got in about 6PM local on Wednesday and, of course, headed straight to the bar to meet my buddy Dave…promptly ordered a 22oz shiner and some 15 year Glenlivet to wash it down with…made a packy run.. And had a few drinks before heading out to meet people.

Image

Found Mike first so I could register and from there the whirlwind began…and the continued destruction of my liver… I think that first night we went to bed about 2:30.
Thursday I had the privilege of playing in the Charity Game (Save the Magic 1st Ed -- DM Doug Rhea) with Erol Otus, Frank Mentzer, Steve Winter, Allen Hammack, Dr. B. Dennis Sustare,, Craig Denham's son , Edwin S. and of course Doug at the helm…. To say it was surreal playing at that table would be an understatement for sure! Really enjoyed the story line and having to make it all work with nothing but Magic Users and Illusionists made for some pretty fun gaming. We manage to find the artifact and "Save the Magic"… all while surviving some critical fumbles: Crit shot to the nuts then slitting of the same fumblers' throat a round later….Oh those Dwarven, battle axe wielding, magic users!!...

Image

Right after that went into Badolato's B1 adventure…managed to survive again as a fighter this time….during the whole adventure all I could keep thinking, while I sat, chatting, next to Erol was… "Holy Shit…I just got healed by Erol "fucking" Otus!!!!"…even texted that phrase at one time to my wife, who texted back "That's cute honey, is Erol a new friend? Go have fun killing monsters…and drink plenty of water between your beers :D "…. Headed to the bar after (surprise!!) and the craziest meeting/introduction with Chris Haskins (How the fuck he remembered me from Italy is still amazing…)We all pretty much stayed up until 3:30 drinking whiskey between the beers, instead of water (as suggested by my wife). Friday Morning was tough…

Image
(Yes' that's Erol "F'ing" Otus' arm!!)

Friday I played in Alex Kammer's H2 5E conversion….Thank the Gods I forgot to set my alarm for my 8AM game (Sorry Bill!) and nursed a hangover  :(  . My experience with 5th has been fairly limited but I will say, I am really impressed with the mechanics of it. H2 was pretty fun…I had done H1 before and actually had an extensive campaign I was in that took place in Damara so being back in that part of the Forgotten Realms was very nostalgic! We obviously had a great DM, and we had a good crew at the table. We were able to get through the dungeon relatively safely with some creative thinking and some good rolls on the other end of the table…not mine

Once we wrapped that up I had to hustle up to Stefan Pokorny's Theatrical D&D….fully dressed with Dwarven Forge pieces (of course!), sound effects, physical props, and beer!! It was being held in the conference room in Stephan's suite which made everything pretty convenient. As we settled in I noticed a pin on one of the other party member's shirt that read "Acauem" ( I have come to the conclusion that there are at least 23 different ways to pronounce this place...  :D )… I couldn't see the name on the badge and inquired…. He introduced himself as Bill Meinhardt. To me that was pretty freaking awesome! We got to talk a lot and it was such an honest pleasure getting to know him and make friends with another genuine person… the theme of this con for sure…great people. Once the party debated long and hard on a plan to get into the castle (climbing, etc.) I decided to let them know I had a flying carpet…was worth a couple good laughs  :D  Wondering why a 3rd level would own such a powerful item, it quickly came to fruition as we approached the tower…they had a crystal!! A freaking anti-aircraft, lightning bolt, shooting one!! I'm sure it was Stefan's plan all along ;) after some heavy damage, but no deaths, we assailed the caste and all was going well until I left for a moment…then the "Dick Move" happened and all chaos broke loose!! Wasn't funny at the time but with some creativity all survived! Game was running late…which meant it was overlapping with Stephan's suite party that had the likes of Bill Webb and a host of others, drinking merrily and watching us, as we delved deeper in until we finally killed the Red wizard at the end  PDT_Armataz_01_01

Image

We partied a short while before heading to the bar to catch up with people. By time I got to the bar it was in full swing, and somewhere near 4 I stumbled into bed….a common theme at this point, the peer pressure was just too much for me to say no to

Saturday I had made sure I kept most of the day open, partly because I wanted to sleep in, but also I wanted to be able to sit and talk with various people, head out to get my wife a pair of "real" cowboy boots (freaking wish I could get souvenirs' that good when she travels!!), and actually make it worth the money I spent on a rental…lol. Once I got back I wanted to sit with Jeff Dee… here's the thing… Jeff was the reason I perused art. While I always drew, Jeff's' image from the Rogues Galley, with the pally standing on the dead black dragon,  was the image that hooked me…then the likes of Erol, John Byrne and Michael Golden came along (Easley/Parkinson were just starting ta TSR as I was in Art School). But Jeff started it all and convinced me to become an artist. So I kept roaming and avoiding! I was chicken shit…lol. Finally I sat and introduced myself and for the next 90 +/- minutes we (Jeff's wife too!) talked and talked…it was pretty epic!

Image

Then the first auction started…I was a little late but got there in time to snag one of the Jeff Easley paintings, and some other stuff I have forgotten…lol (having it all shipped :) ).

Image

Once we wrapped up it was off to my final game of the con…Allen Hammack's C2. While I have been through almost all the original modules, I don't ever recall going through C2, and to have its creator running me through it…well, ‘nuff said. I was surprised at how many times I sat at a table with the same people, this time being no exception. Allen gave us our intro as being captives earning our freedom (I was being held for killing the captain of the guard and the 10 who came to help him…lol) and sent us on our way. Given the time constraints (Satan's Midnight Auction!!) we actually made good time gathering the key segments needed to gain access, found some creative ways of avoiding the Medusa and the fog room…overthinking the Giant but then quickly getting through the water room and making saves 2x's while getting the gem… freedom gained, but I am forever bleached white!  8O

Image

Satan's Midnight Auction was all I had expected and more!! Seriously, the great humor and laughs that happen there really is a testament to everyone involved! I took home more goodies and then realized that I had a 9:30 AM flight so had to get up at 7:30 so I could return the car, etc…. I was gauging what time I should go to bed when everyone started piling into the bar…and the shots began to rain down, rounds being bought, laughs being had, and new friendships being forged. At the end…somewhere around 5 AM, Doug, , Some Irish guy, and I went over to Denny's for some breakfast and more great conversation. At 6:30 I found myself strolling into my room…so much for rest! Got ready, and headed out.

So, if you made it this far you can pretty much figure out that losing my NTRPGCon virginity was amazing…and that my liver hates its existence! Seriously though, the month prior, if you know me on Facebook, was pretty tough for myself and my family…and I honestly toyed with maybe not going (the wife was not going to let that happen..so thanks to her as well!!). I'm so glad I did, as it helped in a part with healing and accepting…..the people I met made me realize we have some very amazing people in our hobby and how much I wish I could have really got into the Con scene decades earlier. I am already registered for next year, and will strongly considering Gary Con and Game Hole next year/this year as well…unless the Mrs. is preggers and ready to go ;) Thanks to Mike and Doug for everything you guys do…thanks to all the people I met for their kindness and genuine conversations we had. We have some amazing people on this page, and it was such a pleasure to finally put a face to the avatar  :)  If you're on Facebook and haven't already, send me a friend request. And again, thanks.

Matt Roberts

It was great meeting you Matt. My #1 story from this year's con that I have been sharing with folks has nothing to do with RPGs.  It was Haskins talking about a person he briefly met in Italy years past who then minutes later randomly shows up in the bar as we are chatting. My mind is still spinning from that one.

Cheers,
Curt

It was great meeting you, Matt.  And also glad to find another 'Hawks fan on the east coast... I was beginning to think I was the only one out here!

And thanks for the beer at the auction!

One reason I love the con is that I meet people I've known for years online! Matt (Lordan) and I realized last year he had bought stuff from me in the mid 90s when I ran a page on usenet selling D&D stuff, then became reaquainted last year,  and after he won the "Free Trip" to NTRPG Con 2017 I was getting him pumped up all year telling him what a great time he was going to have. Seeing as how he was one of the last to bed every night I think he did have a great time!

BTW, is Allen Hammack a machine or what? I think he closed down the bar with us every single night, and looked none the worse for wear the next day. The man is what, 100 years old? :)

Anyway, this is exactly why I love having the con every year, meeting new and old friends, and making new memories.

Great meeting you Matt.  Hope you enjoyed the Whataburger and looking forward to seeing you, and everyone else, again next year!
