Jeff and I had a chance to see the sample footage at Gencon and really enjoyed it.  Looks like they will do a great job of telling the history of TSR and so forth.

I only have a few seconds but I wanted to drop a quick post. The OSR Booth was a great success this year. We had many, many OSR enthusiasts stop in to talk and meet with others. Our location sucked - way back of the hall by the novel/book people. Next year this will be rectified. First off, we will have a double booth and if things work out, it will be part of an entire island of OSR publishers and or OSR-related businesses. More later tonight with pictures.

It was a pleasure to attend my first Acaeum dinner and meet some of our "famous" posters and collectors in person. I was the empty chair next to Tim in the above photo - neatly avoiding any incriminating photos yet again! Increment had an extra copy of his book, and I scored my first purchase of the con. Bracton, Tim and I shared some of Buca's notoriously huge portions while I consumed some poncy cocktail loaded with OH and chatted with Strat about convention modules.

Now I should mention that I once had a string of consecutive GenCons going from about 1979 - 2002, and have been back now for about 4 years. I must say I was nearly overwhelmed on Thursday with both how enormous and diffuse the con has become! I had to choose a mission, or risk being subsumed by the masses.

I decided this year to give Hasbro a chance and proceeded to follow the path of jumping through hoops to acquire the full set of dice (pretty obviously Q-workshop) being offered as incentives for participating in various D&D related activities. On Thursday this meant particpating in a Next playtest (underwhelming at this point), and answering some crossword puzzle questions. My buddy from Chicago showed up, and we spent the night drinking beer, playing Hive, and fantasizing about how we will do this every night once retired (I am sure our wives will bring us back to earth on this one!)

Friday was a 4th edition drow scenario for another die, and a long evening of board and card games, including helping my buddy get his first ever win at Pandemic.

Saturday involved a long line with generic tickets for a Dungeon Command demo and another die to complete my set. My expectations were low, but I unexpectedly liked the game. My buddy and I each bought a faction at one of the discount retailers on the show floor, and set up in the bar at the JW to skirmish against each other from about 5PM - midnight. I must admit those JW folks are remarkably tolerant. We had a large table in a crammed full bar with just the two of us for about 7 hours (ending with a $70 bar and food tab).

Sunday was a day for shopping. Troll and Toad had by then reduced it's clearance price to $1 on it's huge selection of mostly failed gaming products, providing a sobering cautionary tale for those of us who might be budding game designers! Gifts purchased, my buddy returned to Chicago and I spent the evening in, playing online with my regular DDO group.

Back to Salt Lake City, and already looking forward to next year!

How long did it take from unloading-to-setup?

And were you allowed to carry everything straight to your booth, or did you have to deal with show-staff/contractors during the process?

I'm just curious as to how it's done in Indy (I believe it's not union FYI...)

Were auction results were posted anywhere yet?

It took me about four hours in total to set up the booth up which included unpacking, etc. I had to use the loading dock and procedures were not too difficult. However, you only have 30 minutes or so to unload and then they kick you out of the loading dock area. That was not great because I had to go and park somewhere else. Most of my problem was dealing with the space. 10 x 10 is too small. You do not have to use the workers at the convention center. I think we made it work pretty well and I moved products around to make sure everyone got prime exposure. But most people knew what they were looking for when they came to the booth. Of course, hearing, "Hey, I finally found you guys!" was not so great news.
Leaving was not so hard. I actually packed up most of the extra stock at closing on Saturday and loaded it up Sunday an hour before the con opened. That way, me and Matt only had one huge load to take out at the close. Funny thing is that we had to wait for the carpets to get rolled up before leaving (about 45 minutes). It was a great experience and I learned a great deal. Next year I expect a much larger and integrated OSR booth.
