I predict the core rules will be a trimmed down version of the game (PHB/DMG/MM), with the four archetypal classes supported in a totally generic manner, and baseline monsters, all laid out in simple terms. You'll never need anything more. Then come the "optional" supplements to flesh things out further (if you want) on a point-buy/experience points basis:1) Complete Book of Skills - Want to customize your thief (rogue?), spend your xp to distribute skill points differently than described in the core PHB.2) Complete Book of Feats - Wanna be able to perform supercool combat maneuvers and suchlike, spend xp on feats.3) Complete Book of Monster Mutations - Tired of 1 HD orcs? Use the templates and advancement rules here to make an Orc Warlord.4) Complete Book of Prestige - Buy class abilities with xp and call the result whatever you damn well please. My concern is that they will attempt to retain the 4E move away from the DM being the predominant controlling force in the game, and the battlemat/miniatures elements. They need to put the DM back in the driver's seat, and throw out all of the crap (in the core rules anyway) from 3E and 4E that made almost any combat take a minimum of 2 hours.

MetamorphosisSigma wrote:I was going to ask what the heck "OOTS" is, then realized I could just click on the link. Then.... nowhere on the linked page did it tell me (and I read about 12 paragraphs, in which they refer to themselves as "OOTS")... Finally I googled it. Not that I haven't heard of Order of the Stick (I have, but have never read it), but is this some sort of geek shibboleth that I should have recognized right off? Seems like they think so. I'm somehow perversely proud that I had no clue.

Maybe the bulk of people loves them some 5 hours to make a character, but I prefer 0e and 1e where death was quick and capricious and characters that lived to 5th level really were Heroes.I never saw 4 as any worse than 3, really. It was just an extension of the path that had been set decades before. If anything, I found some of it refreshing and good. The first modules out were new and not rehashes of old modules. Though I didn't love Eberron, myself, at least it was a place that didn't feel like we were rehashing the same ground plowed back in the 70s. I found some of the simplifications of things great. The length of combats was obviously horrible, but I found 3e to be intolerable as well, so it was same same to me on that front.I'm not sure WotC can gain me as a regular customer really except by reprinting 0e and 1e stuff as it was to replace my lost/damaged goods and let it be easier for new players to get access to stuff. Or a version that would likely isolate so many people it'd be death..
