People who like to be more leading edge would probably have a different view of the price on these pads and readers.
I would be willing to pay full price for the device itself, if the (non-public domain) books were a little cheaper. Like Jason, I would probably jump into a whole world of early- and pre-20th century stuff that's free or cheap, but I do read more recent things, too, and the prices on new kindle titles are outrageous (2/3 to 3/4 of full trade paperback price).
As far as the other choices, there aren't any as far as I'm concerned. I can't read a backlit screen (iPad, PC, etc.) for more than a few minutes. The blank white background on the kindle is just like a page.
I'll get one eventually, but I'm not in a big rush.
