Congrats to all the winners. I agree that having something from EGG's personal collection is pretty cool.

Hector.

I would have went up to $100 on Top Secret, but I lost track of time and missed half the stuff I wanted to go back and bid on late. My early bids were all smashed except for the SPI Micro Game I won.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

I'm so happy to have won something from EGG! Have been a fan of his since the mid-80s. Always wanted to meet him, but never did get the chance, at least now I have somethings from his collection.

My primary item that I wanted and won:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0301061890

Never heard of this before the auction, but the description sold me on it.

My backup item in case I didn't win my main item and I won it too:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

This is getting framed and hung in my game room.

US$308.25...

Sure it's a shrink but...

Best regards,
Ronald

I actually thought it would go higher, considering a Holmes Basic in shrink from Brian Blume's collection sold at the GenCon auction 2 years ago for $500.  It was a thing of beauty, but still..... 8O

I was suprised how low the Orange B3 went as well.

This was one of four modules that EGG's short lived company "New Infinities Productions" published under the Fantasy Master line.  Frank Mentzer (ExTSR) and Kim Mohan were involved in the company as well.

Frank is a member here an could probably shed a little light on these modules.  He was actually the author of "The Convert".

It would be interesting to know the print run size and other tidbits.

There is some additional information here:

Oh, I won a copy of the other three.  Even though I already have them, I couldn't resist...

I would have liked to have picked up some of the other items as well but unfortunately didn't bid before falling asleep!

I agree, FS is pretty awesome:  I wrote a stellar review of it in Pyramid bitd:  http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/ga ... _suns.html

Not that I'm aware of, Ralph.  Redbrick may have released a limited version, though:  I haven't been following their releases very closely other than Blue Planet.

Do you have the FS video game?  It's not common, IIRC.

Some more info for LordJR: The author of Town of Baldemar was Bob Blake, who previously wrote Gen Con IX Dungeons (where players investigate Baldemar Castle) and Skulls & Scrapfaggot Green for Judges Guild, and The Prophecy of Brie series - first published as RPGA3-8 (the first two as stand alone TSR modules, the rest in Polyhedron), and then as modules C4 and C5. He also wrote IM2 Wrath of the Immortals and another series of Polyhedron modules. IIRC, Frank had a connection with him through the RPGA (getting him to submit his mods for Polyhedron) and perhaps even before that.

Frakkin' Hell!  Of COURSE!  What a stupid/cool detail to miss in my Judges Guild write-up!

Hehe yeah the artwork is a bit off at times  :P

I know Redbrick released the main rulebook in both softcover and hardcover. I'm not aware of a ltd release. They did have an issue with the first copies of Arcane Tech where the pages were incorrectly cut so a number of those books have been cut through the artwork at the top of the pages.

I was actually looking at the videogame today but the ones on ebay often are just the cd + case, or are missing the box. Don't have that one yet. Also don't have the Noble Armada stuff either.

The winning bidder got that at a steal IMO.

I agree with bombadil; and furthermore, if I'd had enough funds to spend, that would not have been even close to enough to buy that Orange B3.

Hey Gnat and Bombadil,

Just out of curiosity, how much did everyone expect the Orange B3 to go for?

Best regards,

For a start, the price on that one is distorted by the "+50% for SW" attempt to do a one-size-fits-all on the "valuation"; whereas in reality SW'd copies are "relatively" common.
If you want to buy a decent unshrinked copy, you've basically got to pay more-or-less full SW price - not forgetting that a good number of those SW'd copies have a degree of warping.

I know of at least 4 copies that sold for $1500 or more in the past year and a half all of them were NOT in SW.
As far as I know they were all in Fine to NM condition (Some were sold privately through this forum board).
One other copy I know of was sold privately (May 2010) for $1800 (Slightly warped, in SW, otherwise Mint).
Two years ago, one that was slightly dinged and slightly warped in SW sold for $3050 on E-Bay.

As far as anyone knows, NONE of those copies were touched by EGG...
Much less owned by him for 30 plus years.
Hence my surprise that his copy did not sell for a lot more than it did.
A shade over $1300 was a rediculous steal IMO...

If I had the funds, then there is NO DOUBT at all that it would NOT have sold for what it did.
I would have gone to $1600 myself and not even hesitated (If I had the funds).
If I had the funds some collectors here seem to have, $2000 would not have been too much.

But then I am one of the few here who think the Acaeums valuations for the orange B3 are rediculously low.
Some think there are hundreds of copies out there, though they offer no convincing proof of that total.
While there is far more reliable evidence (including eyewitness testimony) that suggests that there are probably only 72 copies (At most).

Even if the truth is that there were say 200 copies of the Orange B3 that somehow survived the garbage bin...
What is the reasoning for a NM ST1 (100-200 copies sold at the fair and who knows how many went to stores) to be valued at $2339
While a similarly conditioned NM Orange B3 is valued at $843?

Especially since (other than ONE copy at the 2008 GENCON Auction) no Orange B3s have (reportedly) been sold for so low an amount in at least 6-7 years (2003). :?

As I understand it; the valuation board has a formula they use and I am sure it is pretty much standard, but I do not have to agree with the results.    8)

Standing by for another flaiming....

Don't recall exactly but the runs were very probably 1,000 @ tho it might have been 5k (at most) if we were overoptimistic. We produced the settings "Town of Baldemar" and "Aesheba: Greek Africa", and modules "The Abduction of Good King Despot" and "The Convert."

The late Bob Blake, author of Baldemar and co-author of Aesheba, had a long and storied history with Judges' Guild and was also the Coordinator of the GenCon Open (AD&D Team Tourney) in the 1970s and early '80s, writing/co-authoring/managing all the tournament writing during that time. I offered him the job of running the RPGA after I set it up, but he stuck with his job & family in Indiana. (As a pharmaceuticals regional manager he made a lot more than TSR could offer.)

Tutored extensively in the D&D school of hard nox, Bob was one of the best in the world at writing and running adventures, a huge talent now almost forgotten. In the DM's Invitational of 1980 (the last major DM competition of record iirc), he took second place by only 1 point out of 300 (players/voters/evaluators being Gary, Brian Blume, and Jim Ward).

Despot is rather interesting. It's a classic '70s convention tourney by Will Niebling (one of his very few, he was mostly in TSR Sales) and Don Turnbull (1st inductee of the Hall of Fame, head of TSR UK for a time, and NIPI's second and final unsuccessful President). Doesn't work well as a campaign plug-in but is fine as a one-off.

Convert is, of course, the infamous RPGA tournament that I wrote, formally offered to TSR for publication (which they declined), and which NIPI then published, but TSR sued since we hadn't touched second base or something (despite our attorney's assurances that everything was aok). Turnbull negotiated settlement instead of fighting (we didn't have the money) and that was that. Cost us a few grand, cost TSR more than 50 grand, and was promptly buried. The PoG didn't want to publish anything by me, for business reasons.

I am aware of a nice neat 2 cases (don't recall the case size but that 72 sounds about right) that vanished from the warehouse, and at most a couple of dozen others that employees (and others) didn't return for credit/shredding.

I was the auctioneer for the first few sold (notably 2 to stratochamp, early '80s) and knew several owners of copies at the time. I also know who had the 2 cases but I ain't sayin' unless they okay it.

The 200 speculation is probably near the mark.

(aside) Previous discussion of oB3 boxes within cases, etc., over on viewtopic.php?t=2954 . Plus those couple dozen that other employees got a hold of.

Almost certainly more than that blind guess as noted before: advertised on two occasions in WD, with the remainder sold after the fair not pulped. The number known to exist has already been more than doubled on the Acaeum listing (that amendment went through unadvertised); q.v. also viewtopic.php?p=32730&highlight=#32730 and various posts elsewhere.

Hi,

I think there comes a time, when all the collectors who CAN afford a rare item, and want it,  already have it.

I suspect that is what happened with this OB3.

Those who cared enough about its rarity were also distracted by other items, so it slipped thru.

Cheers,
Malc

Thanks guys.
That information brings more clarity to the issues (for me at least).

And to be clear, I am not knocking the way things are valuated here either.
This site has undoubtably contributed more knowledge to this hobby, than any other site in existance.
And the members here are awesome too.

Gnat,

Current valuations have not been incorporated yet (2010-2011).  Plus, some of the past valuations will diminish in importance as time goes on.  They are eliminated from the valuation calculations.  So, assuming that the sales values of oB3 continue to remain high, expect that the valuations will rise.

By the way, private sales are not included in the valuations. Only eBay or convention auction sales typically.  It difficult to authenticate and there is too much potential for skewing the "market value" up or down.  The valuation board also reserves the right to omit any sales that are considered an anomally, although this is rarely done.  The valuation calculations tend to smooth out these issues.

Hope this provides a little more clarity as well.

I thought the shrink items would be crazy in this auction so I actually steered cleared of most of them. 8O.  No, I have not kicked the habit, just took a breather. Everyone relax now. :)

Actually, I picked up one of the books I have been intending to buy for some time, Gary Gygax's World Builder.  It seemed like a nice piece and was reasonably priced, although I imagine he never actually had much to do with it.  Oh well.  It was the best sniping I could manage with an iPhone and a pathetic Internet connection.

Congrats to everyone who managed to pickup some really great pieces.

Hello Mrs. Cleaver, Theodore.

Gee, Mrs. Cleaver ... That certainly is a lovely dress.
