I am a regular customer of Powell Books. They are not a good source for RPG material because they tend to over value the items.

Powell Books on Ebay is a brand new thing as far as I know.

Maybe they haven't actually got a clue, but think they know books so they must know RPGs...?

When I went to Powell Books on my honeymoon, I was excited as I had heard many stories about the treasures inside.

Excitement dwindled when I went to the RPG section and saw 1E PHB and DMGs for $50 each (this was 10 years ago when any HPB store had shelves of these for five bucks each). By the time I got to the REH section and goggled at the $20 and $30 paperbacks I decided I'd stick with finding the occasional deal at Half Price Books instead....

I would go with Mark and say they just don't have a clue....

It's like the Strand in NY. Every time someone sticks around long enough to train themselves, the person wanders off and sets up an online business of their own. They can usually buy almost all of their inventory at their former employer. They know that the next employees will be clueless and there are endless pricing errors. Consequently, there is extraordinary lack of continuous expertise at the big stores.

That makes it somewhat random for the consumer. A bigger problem for occasional shoppers looking for deals is that in just about every collecting area one or more bookseller/resellers with expert knowledge checks the shelves every few hours. Soon they have the capital to buy all the big mistakes.

If you hit Powells, the Strand or some of the bookstores in Chicago, Texas or Oakland when they have just priced things, it can be rather like hitting the lottery. But, you have to be there doing business in real time when they hit the shelves.

In person, Powell's is the most impressive book store I've ever seen (much more interesting than The Strand). My experience with purchasing from them online has been mediocre at best - no pictures, slow delivery, etc.

The Powell's experience is not meant for the online world. Powell's is meant to be visited live and in-person. Many, many good deals can be found just by taking some time and wandering the stacks.

Powell's is a literary experience in itself. A city block of books on multiple levels with a layout so confusing you need a map to find your way.

Tremendous fun!

They just aren't a good place to buy RPG's.

Except that last time I was there I bought Pleasure Prison of the B'Thuvian Demon Whore for $6.95.

Many of the GAZ series have always gone for high prices but then throw in a shrinkwrapped copy and then no telling what someone will pay for it. But it really isnt all that nuts until someone actually buys it.

I think it's apart of their strategy to drive up prices. They are less worried about selling (but yay if they do!) and more concerned with driving the prices up.
