I use dismembered versions of most of the hardbacks. iirc I was considering that FF for the process but found another that was even worse, so I offloaded that one.

Pity about the box damage (on the later images), but didn't stop that from making $406. And I'd thought the 5th still running at $310+ (

The price was on the high side. The buyer was desperate for a copy pre-OCE with Tolkien references and even with the few "mouse bites" this was the cleanest edition they had seen in the past year (I'm the buyer). The bargains elsewhere were just a happy coincidence

Outside of our well-known and jaded circles there are quite a few folks who are extremely interested in any & all Tolkien-based games, legal or otherwise. The illegal boardgames in particular can get quite pricey.

(tho the latter doesn't seem to have been updated for 5 years... and is inaccurate, as they rate several as max rarity if in shrink, while I have several of 'em in shrink. Or maybe that's just me. ;> )

ps: welcome ccamomile, and you should also acquire a Holmes D&D 'blue book' of a printing early enough to also contain hobbits and other unlicensed Tolkien tidbits.

Thanks for the links, ExTSR. What is really killing me about your post, though, is the discovery of a printing of the Holmes edition with Hobbit references. Now I have to spend every waking moment scouring the far reaches of the internet for a 1st printing. AAAaaaargh! I've never even seen a first printing of the Holmes edition. Time to start saving up and figure out how to explain it to the wife....

Ccamomile, you might be interested in my Summary of Tolkien References in the Blue Book.

In the Holmes Basic rulebook (aka Blue Book), the only Tolkien material that was ever changed was the word "hobbit" to "halfling". The 1st print (Lizard Logo, ~Fall 1977) uses "hobbits" throughout. The 2nd print (Lizard Logo, Jan 78) changes most to "halflings" but still uses "hobbits" in five locations. In the 2nd edition (Wizard Logo, Nov 78) and later printings a sole reference to "hobbits" remains, in the description of the spell "Cure Light Wounds".

The other Tolkien references in the Blue Book (e.g. to Balrogs, Barrow Wights) were never changed. Some of this text is straight from the OD&D set, but even though the same text was changed in OD&D it was not changed in the Blue Book.

The first three printings of the Blue Book are also collectible because they have differences in art (three pieces were later deleted, others were added), tables (alignment and wandering monsters were revised), and monsters (Nixie was deleted, others were added), in addition to other changes.
