Stuff?  What is there in Afghanistan that we want?

Dirt?  Rocks?  Impassable mountains?  Scrub grass?  Burkhas?  Turbans?

We don't need Afghanistan to get heroin supplies.  We can get that from China via Mexico.

We're in Afghanistan because a bunch of nutbirds used its chaos as a safe harbor to attack us.

We're still in Afghanistan because we're too soft-hearted to either leave them in the lurch or do the cruel things that must be done there.

Stuff?  No.

You certainly have a more inspiring outlook than I, but the leaders of the country may appear soft-headed, they are not soft-hearted.

Nations, even the USA, take action because of self interest. Stuff can be goods, like heroin, or resources like oil, or power such as positioning a military force in the middle east, or posturing (saving face or commanding respect) such as slapping down a regions most powerful military or crushing a few countries (that needed crushing, but hell, a lot of countries need to be crushed and we don't do it).

it is very interesting to see the differing views and opinions on this thread on such subjects, but I agree, it can also lead to some serious falling outs and I always try to avoid discussing politics too much with friends, although generally speaking we share similar views...

Why?

I'm not offended... discourse is nice. I like having a heated debate with people I respect.

It's really nice to have an open debate with people from all over the world that share some of the same interests but have differing opinions.

But I'm sure this discussion will eventually fizzle out and we will go back to talking about more important things like our Red Sox and or designer jeans.

I also have no problem staying detached and don't get offended or fall out over discussions about politics or religion. For a devout fascist neo-scientology preaching revivalist born again mormon, I'm pretty open minded. Mind you, so are my wives.

Boobies. We can talk boobies. real or plastic?

Funny, I'm an uber-progressive and we probably share the same objections with NAFTA. Secure sanctioned deals to make cheap and unaccountable business off-shore hurts American jobs and bushiness... and in the end it drives immigrants here, taking up the last of our menial labor.

...Mexico is in a bad way right now. I have a very close friend from Mexico and her family back home is feeling it's effects heavily.

I also, am not a pot smoker (can still count on one hand the times I've "tried" it) and I see it as a "non-issue" issue. Politicians are more afraid of this for it's "political ickiness" than anything else. Canada has the right idea... decriminalization vs. legalization. I would hate to see the government get into the dope business. I guess I'm more libertarian in that regard.

Just like the immigration issue... politicians don't wanna be the one that signs off on a policy that may hurt their popularity with one group or another.

Don't you just love politicians? ;)

Imperialism is taking over other countries to use them as colonies for economic gain.

We have little to nothing to gain economically from occupying those two countries.  (Oh, god, please don't answer "oil."  Think harder than that.  The US doesn't need Iraqi oil and we could have had it from them for much cheaper.)

As for the non-existence of nukes and chemical weapons...don't mistake the political needs of the American Left for actual history.

Then why exactly are we there and have been for years? Why do we continue to pump funds into Israel's military, why do we continue decade after decade to bomb Iraq? We have to be there for a reason and "stability" in the region ain't it.

Certainly not to bring them "democracy".

So why. I'm not being snarky... I'm truely curious as to what you believe our MO is in the middle east.

am i being thick .. i thought that mister heaney had summed a  lot of the whole point here.

this is not a US problem , the whole thing is just part of the being human. Why do we expect countries do act differently from individuals? Self-interest, jealousy ... this is who we are. Why do we expect countries (which don't exist other than in people) to act differently than us?

the way our national governments act is just a refleciton of how we act (and vote) ourselves. why are we so suprised.

So Heaney compares England f**king Ireland physically .. but it leaves Ireland pregnant. Go figure

The bottom line is the survival of Israel and the Jewish population, and yes OIL.

And the fact that the next big war will be fought in the Middle East, and if we (meaning the entire world, not just the USA) allow ALL of the Neighbors in the Middle East to go wild and unchecked with radical Muslim religeous nutsy behavior then Israel is going to die a horrible death as will all the Jewish population in the area.

The political and religeous leaders of all but a couple of the Musilm Countries in and near the Middle East do not bother to hide the fact that that is the goal.
Same for Hammas, and every other terroist group of radical Muslims.

Until some other reliable source of power is made affordable and becomes readily available to the masses, then OIL and the Middle East will continue to be vital to all the worlds interest (INCLUDING THE UK).

That also includes all those folks who could care less about whether all the Jews in the world are totaly wiped out.

And after that happens, the world will no longer care about that region.
The jewish people will be all alone.

I'm sorry. I fail to see how Israel plays a part in the oil equation. And I don't see why Jewish people have a right to their own country (even if it was promised to them by God). Why the hell can't they live on the planet like every other religeon and race? Or is it the 'Hitler tried to kill us, so now we can't trust anyone' thing?

There are plenty of sources of oil all over the globe, and if a bunch of arabs want to fight over a piece of turf in the middle east that the israelis now claim was given to them by God, then who the hell are we to get in on the act? Again, why is it anything to do with the UK or America what or who fights over what piece of land in the middle east. And let's face it, the Israelis have no more claim to that piece of land than say the Egyptians, Syrians, Iraqis, or Italians for that matter. This 'it was promised to us by God' is a heap of bullcrap. That stretch of land has been fought over for millenia, and no one population has any more claim to it than any other. If it weren't for 'western' involvement, there would be stability in the middle east, and 'israel' would be part of some other country.

Yet again, we see the meddling of the US and UK in the matters of other countries, and we do nothing but fuck them up. After we bleed them dry that is.

As for Milf's question (Sorry TheMilford, that one's gonna stick  :D ), the reason the US are in Afganistan and Iraq is because they are training and expanding their military. How better to develop weaponry and train soldiers to kill locals than to have an actual conflict. That's what Vietnam was all about, and that's what Afganistan is all about. It's keeping people in jobs. People need to manufacture clothing and equipment, people are needed to train the kids to go and do the dirty thing, and more kids are need to replace the dead ones. So it's all good. It keeps the economy ticking over and people earn big bucks out of war. Obviously not the schmucks with the guns, but then if they were intelligent, they'd not be there in the first place. It's a natural selection thing.

That's Mr. Milfy to you...

I know why we are there... I was curious as to FormCritics reasoning that is it isn't imperialism... which I believe it is. Imperialism in a globo-capitalist sandwhich

It's all about contracts... Billions upon billions of dollars-worth of contracts.

Cronies gotz to getz paid!

My Buddy (godspeed) is shipping out tomorrow to Afghanistan... It's another private contract hiring police officers. At least he'll have equipment he needs unlike our actual soldiers.

And as for the Israel and the proliferation/preservation of Jews...? ... Not sure I get that Gnat. Israel is a US state for the most part. They are our badassmotherf@ckers of the region and the US is happy to keep them right where they are and in constant opposition to Palestine. That way we are guaranteed  a ripe army of trained soldiers. It's basically a military breeding tank.
