But I've said it before. The stereotypes of various countries tends to be true for the bulk of it's population. The English on the whole are arrogant arseholes when they go abroad, with no interest in foreign culture, and little interest in anything cultural.

I agree, I've met Killjoy.  That arrogant git made me get up early every morning to fix his tea and crumpets....which would have been ok except I had to serve him in bed, and he kept ringing that little hand bell to make me hurry...

Well, posting from my mud hut in post colonial ireland ...

Never underestimate what an amazing country the US is. For me it represents humanity in all it gloriousness and all its depravity: it is the best and the worst all at once. I'm going all Dickens

I'm irish, (as you might have guessed  ) but i'm also british. Maybe, that gives me (like red_bus) an interesting perspective on the UK-US western liberal democracy.

At Cambridge our reader in residence was Seamus Heaney. In his poem Act of Union (freely available on the web) he wrote:

          I

To-night, a first movement, a pulse,
As if the rain in bogland gathered head
To slip and flood: a bog-burst,
A gash breaking open the ferny bed.
Your back is a firm line of eastern coast
And arms and legs are thrown
Beyond your gradual hills. I caress
The heaving province where our past has grown.
I am the tall kingdom over your shoulder
That you would neither cajole nor ignore.
Conquest is a lie. I grow older
Conceding your half-independant shore
Within whose borders now my legacy
Culminates inexorably.

II

And I am still imperially
Male, leaving you with pain,
The rending process in the colony,
The battering ram, the boom burst from within.
The act sprouted an obsinate fifth column
Whose stance is growing unilateral.
His heart beneath your heart is a wardrum
Mustering force. His parasitical
And ignmorant little fists already
Beat at your borders and I know they're cocked
At me across the water. No treaty
I foresee will salve completely your tracked
And stretchmarked body, the big pain
That leaves you raw, like opened ground, again

Ireland, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran?

TBH, I think it is supremely arrogant of any country to think it has the right to tell another country how it should govern itself or deal with it's citizens. For us in the 'democratic west' to think our values and systems are superior to everyone elses, and then to impose those value systems adhoc on everyone else is completely contemptable. The idea that 'we' the western democratic alliance are 'bringing democracy to these backwards countries is both laughable and an example of how stupid and ignorant we are as nations. As nations we ask our governments to do these things and we send our young to enforce it. Really, who are we to judge and say 'we are right and they are wrong'? Between the USA and the UK, we comprise two of the most politically corupt ecoonies on the planet.

And the comment about Mexico....dude, it's a 3rd world country. When I want their opinion of how to bribe a police officer I'll ask them, otherwise any opinion of theirs is silly. They can't even run their own banana republic much less take time to comment on boorish Americans.  If it weren't for  U.S. money (both aid given them and billions of dollars mailed back by illegals here) Mexico would be pretty close to Somalia right now. They've had more police officers killed there this year than I've had hot lunches (and I'm big, I eat a lot...)

Not that I made a specific "comment about Mexico" but for what it's worth If we hadn't passed NAFTA they probably would have been well on their way years ago to being a 2nd-world country just like us.

And you are right... the French are pretty snobby... But they gave us Erik Satie and the Tour de France so I'm not complaining. ;)

I think the strongest and richest nations have a responsibility to the poor and weak nations.  However the attitude and approach with which this is done makes all the difference in the world.  Isolationism is not the answer.  No man is an island, and no country is completely independent.  We can all learn from each other.  I wish we could all take a few thousand miles step back and see ourselves as citizens of planet earth.  However, as mbassoc2003 has indicated before, we live in a world with a bunch of stupid people and that makes this utopian blathering sound worthless.

Still, I believe there is a lot more to celebrate here than criticize.  There are fewer people dying from conflicts percentage-wise than just fifty years ago.  The United Nations, with all its faults, is better than no UN.  Most of the world's wars have to do with smaller countries instead of the super-powers.  We've got a long way to go, but I like many of the trends. 8)

The problem with foreign aid to poor countries is that it typically rewards bad behavior.
By throwing buckets of money at problems (hunger, education, aids, etc.) it creates cultures of corruption, theft, bribery, warlords and local gangs.
Concentrate on rewarding good behavior and there might be some tangible long term results.

As long as the economy of Mexico can run better on drugs than actual commerce that place isn't getting any better....

The right? Countries aren't about rights, they are about protection. It is safety in numbers from the very first pack of men to the most modern society. It isn't about rights it is about the ability to tell other countries what to do, which is mainly don't take our stuff, or give us stuff or we will take it from you. While mankind can intellectually conceive of where evolution can take both man and society, we are not there yet.

But countries do not judge right and wrong, that is what men do, what we all have to do and be judged ourselves by our actions. It is the burden of being human, of taking a step into the world of other humans. Countries on the other hand usually have more heads than a hydra, so many judgements of right and wrong that they either do not act or act for reasons of what they want or need rather than right or wrong.

So each nation is a lumbering many headed beast, or a beast of one head, usually vile, with a monster leading it, a Hussein, Hitler, Stalin or Mao. Unfortunately the west tends to drift from Boar to pig, from Buffalo to fattened cow, while other countries become lean, feral, hyena's braying and striking at the soft underbelly of their larger rivals.

With nations, any nation, it is not right or wrong, it is survival in a world of diminishing resources. The west is a pig too large to kill quickly, and while we would like to see other countries become smaller, more tractible piglets, there just aren't enough Big Macs to go around.

As a citizen of a very large Pig, I want to see the nation become at the very least a nicely tusked wild boar secure in our sounder with no other boars quite so large, mean and nicely tusked as ourselves.

Benjoshua is almost right IMHO. But I think it is the responsibility of richer and stronger nations not to exploit poorer and weaker nations, and we (USA and the UK) have exploited more poor weak and deprived peoples than anyone else in the entire history of mankind. We are the most corupt societies on the planet.

And, yes, we do 'judge' other societies and pronounce them inferior to our own. We do it every day in our press and on our television sets. Why is the UK and the US in Afganistan and Iraq if not to 'bring them democracy'? All the rest is just political smoke and bullshit.

Problem is, the majority of people buy into the biased and misleading crap that their TVs tell them because the majority of society has neither the brain power nor the will to think for themselves.

I have very little sympathy for the "imperialism" slur.  It's intellectually lazy and just plain false.

(I'm not attacking you personally, TheMilford, because I know we're all just having fun talking smack.)

We have a few old territories (most of them dots of land in the Pacific) hanging on to American protection because we can't get them to go away.  Guam and Puerto Rico, for instance, don't want to be their own countries.  Within the last decade both of them have voted not to get off the public dole and go independent.

It's kind of cool to talk about imperialsim and how the US is doing this or that to someone around the world.  That's because memories are short and a number of the countries that used to need us desperately don't need our protection right now.

LoL The "Bring them Democracy" is the political smoke and bullshit. The USA  in Afganistan is about stuff, keeping and taking it.

While the richer and stronger countries are corrupt they are also not more corrupt than the poorer weaker countries. Making the poorer weaker and angry countries stronger and richer is a good way of committing suicide.

Nations are not nice, even if they are small and oppressed. Small and oppressed also tends to be dangerous, feral and cruel.

As a member of a larger richer stronger country I definitely want it to stay that way. I want my family, friends and most of my neighbors to be safe. Part of that involves making sure that the small poor dangerous countries stay as small and poor as possible as long as they are dangerous.

People are basicly good, unless they are hungry, or think you are an infidel, or want something you have, like your shoes, or your kidney...

People are basicly good till they band together for protection and create a warrior class, then an aristocracy, till they worship big mojo whose voice on earth wants you till kill anyone who doesn't worship big mojo.

Yeah, I really want to see my country become weak and poor because it just isn't right that people in other countries are weak and poor.

What I want is my country to be rich and strong and have countries that ally with my country become slightly less rich and strong, and countires that hate my country, I want to see them become weak, disordered and so poor they can't buy a tank, or plane, or nuclear missile.

I have no desire to commit national suicide, or wear sackcloth and ashes for the injustices of man upon this earth.

That doesn't explain or justify why the US and UK are in Afganistan or Iraq. The idea that we invaded Iraq because SH had nuclear weapons (or nucular weapons as the monkey liked to call them), and the idea that we invaded Afganistan to cat OBL is plain and simple bullshit. We invaded those countries for no other reason than we felt like it. Like as not, the UK has got itself into another Vietnam, and many many people will die and eventually the US and UK will go scurrying away with their tail between their legs once the general populations of our respective countries stop buying into the propaganda being pumped out of the press every day. I realise it's hard to see it, living in that environment, but it's true nonetheless.

Stuff?  What is there in Afghanistan that we want?

Dirt?  Rocks?  Impassable mountains?  Scrub grass?  Burkhas?  Turbans?

We don't need Afghanistan to get heroin supplies.  We can get that from China via Mexico.

We're in Afghanistan because a bunch of nutbirds used its chaos as a safe harbor to attack us.

We're still in Afghanistan because we're too soft-hearted to either leave them in the lurch or do the cruel things that must be done there.

Stuff?  No.

Imperialism is taking over other countries to use them as colonies for economic gain.

We have little to nothing to gain economically from occupying those two countries.  (Oh, god, please don't answer "oil."  Think harder than that.  The US doesn't need Iraqi oil and we could have had it from them for much cheaper.)

As for the non-existence of nukes and chemical weapons...don't mistake the political needs of the American Left for actual history.

Look at the map.

None of those pipelines pass through Iraq.  We did not need to invade Iraq to secure piplines.

TBH, the attacks of 9/11 happened because the US had piss poor defences and believed it were completely impenetrable to the rest of the world. You can't blame Afganistan for that. If you're gonna blame an entire country for the actions of some of it's citizens, maybe you need to look closer to home.

That is the whole problem that the Middle East has with America, and the fact that the majority of Americans just don't understand that is what we're talking about here. About being educated and fed bullshit from cradle to grave, and very few being intelligent and motivated enough to take a real look at the world outside of the American World your country fabricates for you.
