Much of the concern I read here seems to revolve around the rather…er…organic way the first fifty got dibs.  Originally "The List" was simply a call for interest  - very different than a sign up for the purchase of a specific Otus print; printed in a specific manner and in a specific number.  Shame really.  The committee might not want to change their mind on the final number -- but it would be nice to have THEM offer up a solution that addresses the significant concern shown in the community about the project.

That said - why don't the wait list folks simply approach Otus independently to draw up a second piece of original art with the same reproduction terms?  It wouldn't be an "Acaeum" themed print but I bet most wouldn't mind.  Perhaps the existing committee could even offer a generous introduction between Otus and a delegate from a new committee. I don't see the harm as long as the original group doesn't get saddled with more work.  Just a thought.

Excellent idea.

If this isn't resolved in a favorable way I will almost certainly be looking into this...

And yes... it is a shame... how something so nebulous became so rigid and will end up leaving such a bad taste for many and needn't be so.

If the number is increased or the waiting list is going to try themselves, please throw me on the lists. Thanks!

I would be in favour of excluding those on the list (proper or waiting) who joined the Acaeum purely to get in on the project. Post count shouldn't be the way of deciding; a simpler way would be if a user joined the site AFTER the announcement and call for interest, then they do not qualify. People with a join date before the announcement (irrespective of post count) are eligible.

Just for the record, I'm in the 50 but would have no objection to the count being increased, should the committee decide to go that way. There are valid reasons on both sides to either increase or stay at fifty - the prime reason for increasing the count (in my opinion) - the project is a labour of love, not an investment opportunity. The more collectors on this site who can get a print, the better.

Conversely, the main reason (as I see it) to keep the list at 50 is with logistics. The committee KNOW if they print 50, they will all sell. If they up the count to 75 to cope with the waiting list, and get a small number of drop outs, they might be left with a handful of extras (which might open a can of worms all of its own). Being sure of fully subscribing the print run is a good reason of keeping the number printed below the number of people desiring a copy.

Regards

Mike

Thanks!  You can give me credit for it waaaay back on page 9.

:)

If this parallel work takes off then another thing ...don't try and pigeon hole Otus into doing something YOU think is going to be cool.  Just show him the money and let him go to town on what HE would like to do.  I'm sure it would be a refreshing change for him to work on such a commission and he would really enjoy it.  Maybe just keep a loose D&D Fantasy parameter, but otherwise anything goes.   :)   Art should stimulate, challenge, and surprise the viewer, and the opposite happening with this project was my fear, hence I wasn't interested.  But if this were to become a reality ...

Cheers!

Cheers!

just my tuppence worth, as I'm not on any list. It strikes me that those grumbling about not getting on the list are upset they arent getting an investment they can sell soon. I would like to think all those who are getting a print would value that for what it is and retain it forever. I dont visit here daily, but even I could have been in the 1st 10 people. It wouldn't surprise me that those coming out of the woodwork now & arse-aching about not  being on the list heard about it elsewhere, not this thread

This is closer to the truth than anyone else will admit

50 is a good number for a 1st time endeavor! Especially for the schmoe who has to ship these things to everybody!! Doing some major project right off the bat is not a smart idea, plain and simple. I was at 1st thinking the # should be higher but then it's just a big risk considering that $50 a pop deal. Too many things could potentially go wrong... The more I think about it the more I can foresee possible pitfalls. Seriously, we haven't even seen the art yet... This is basically a test run and I think it should remain a smaller venture Vs a potential loss and failure.
If you produce 100 of these things and then only sell 60 or something then you're looking at a fail at $50 per. If they increase the # then 20 more people sign up and then they increase the # again? And again and again... Then people drop out cause the people who're motivated as having something rare drop out and then you're left with too many copies. This is very possible. The flip side being that this may be too rare. I think that the latter could possibly be the case but we just do not know. It's smarter to have a demand than to sit on 30 copies and $1500 unsold. If they increase the # then it makes no sense not to continue, BadMike is correct here. I didn't agree with him at 1st but the more I think about it...

Another important consideration here is that it's in the artists best interest to have a success with this. One of the few things I agree with Cheesepaws about is that E.O. is better off having a prized possession type of piece. He's better off having some percieved value being a high one as opposed to low. This is advantageous in working with future artists.

it also wouldn't surprise me if some people have withdrawn from the lists because money changed hands to do so. I get the impression some collectors will pay anything to get certain items...

From someone who does not know them.......

I am one of those "People" you spoke of.
Have you seen all the stuff I have been placing up for sale on E-Bay over the last month?
Yes, I am in need of money for reasons I have posted elsewhere on this forum more than once.
But I would not sell my place on that list, and my honor is not for sale either.

I would sell my SWed Orange B3 first..... And almost did.
Only a few dollars kept it from happening.

There will be other prints by other artists in the future and I hope I can get on the list(s) then.

Your statement was cruel and rude as hell sir, and honestly quite surprising to me.
Although there are several folks here who it would NOT surprise me at all to read that sort of crap from, I would have thought better of you.

I am sorely dissapointed.
I think you are indeed wondering aimlessly.....

Suckers!  Easiest $50 I ever made.

No, that's stupid.  No money changed hands for my spot either.  The prints had better go to people that appreciate them, though.  The first guy putting one on eBay will get the lemur stare of death.

What a disaster this thing has started to turn into.

All this finger pointing, accusations and bickering. This was supposed a fun endeavor for the community at large and it's turned into quite the opposite.

I think everyone involved in this process needs to take a deep breath and a step back and get themselves a new perspective on this thing.  It's just a a F**KING $50 art print.

In the long run it may even be worth more than that, but even so, is all of the bulls**t really worth it?

Think about it for a second before you make your next post. And that entails EVERYONE.

apologies Aneoth, I would not question your honour or reasons for doing so. I just merely considered if someone off the list, would be trying to buy their way onto the list by tempting less serious members. No offence meant and no thinking aloud from now.

Was it?  It isn't when "Community" is being defined as "50 people who didn't happen to have too busy of a few days to check the boards"

This most definitely is NOT a community endeavor.  It is an elitist endeavor for a lucky handful.  That is all well & good, but don't call it what it isn't.
