Finally got back all my D&D rulebooks. Here are photos. This also gives you an idea of what it looks like in the holder. Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, These are the only 4th prints to be graded and there are no printings 1-3 graded yet for the original 3 books.

What are the reasons for the 6 on the first LBB?
From the cover i can only spot likely rust on staples...

Sometimes not easy to spot from scans. Here are the defects.

moderate creasing to cover
moderate spine stress lines to cover
moderate staple rust

So JSA is now authenticating signatures on magazines. So anyone who wants to submit their modules and such with sigs, you can do so. We've graded signed stuff in the past with our signature series, but if you have unwitnessed sigs, you can get them authenticated. Just note that any piece with a signature on the cover MUST go through JSA first. Any signature on the interior will be optional. Also, talked with the president about sigs on the cellophane. He doesn't see why we can't authenticate sealed pieces with sigs on the wrapper.

Phil or anybody else.... Some modules have a small square notch taken out of the spine about 2 inches down? What is this and how would it impact grading. I've noticed this notch a few times over the years.

I believe it's called a "remainder notch". Big retailers would do this to overstock / unsold copies in order to identify them as price-reduced (so an enterprising individual didn't buy them and then attempt to return them later to the same store for original retail price).

Others will have to weigh in on whether this affects value or not.

Many of the 10th Anniversary packs had the notches.

I agree with what Foot said. Probably was to mark them as 'overstock or unsold copies' to be discounted

Much like record albums, cassettes and even CDS were done. A notch, a clipped corner, a hole punch through the bar code.

In regards to the notch, it was an overstock practice for retailers. As far as the impact on value, I read an article years ago about how grease pencil markings on old comics that retailers sometimes put on their stock (I forget why it was done). It was explained that those markings don't generally impact the value/condition....it was a while ago (2020?), so I have no clue if my memory is 100% correct, but I got the feeling people/graders didn't care. I wonder if it will be looked at like these markings?

Sorry, I've been a bit out of commission mentally. That notch is rather small and will probably not affect grade too much. That being said, my guess will probably be at least a 7.5 but don't quote me on that. I'd have to consult with my fellow graders. I know with records, they would clip corners on overstock/discounted items.

Yes, or else the grade would probably be 5.0 or lower. Depends on how many were detached. On a comic book, a detached cover would be no higher than 4.0. Actually completely split books will usually get 1.0-1.5, but that's usually because of brittleness. So instead of killing the grade, the finalizer decided to give it a higher qualified grade.
