His films haven't won any awards since 1991, mostly because they have been shit since then, but I think he has pretty much creeped out all of Hollywood and they are ashamed of his nonsense. While JFK was entertaining, The Doors (out the same year) was IMO the beginning of the slide. It's come out since then that Stone ignored everything anyone told him about Jim Morrison and basically made the entire film up, a trend that would follow in his other "historical" films since then. Only gotten worse since then. If people in hollywood are avoiding Stone it is for an entirely different reason.

Hiya,

the fact that the Germans are good doesnt alter the fact that England played like sh*t the whole tournament.

However, I would rather see the germans win than that cheating junkie Maradonna

I don't think they are a machine - theyre young and energetic with a different way of playing, and VERY fit.

Platoon is a good movie. (It's playing on TV right now, as I type. Does Stone have another movie coming out?)

Unfortunately, Platoon is taken as sort of a definitive statement on the Vietnam War by many people. It's a fairly narrow and very extreme story about one month in the life of one platoon. It's not a history lesson.

A rough equivalent would be if people believed that Kelly's Heroes was the entire story of "how it really was" in World War II. :roll:

Well it's obvious that JFK is Stone's lunatic fantasy masturbation manifesto about what he thinks happened, but it's entertaining in a way that all conspiracy thriller movies are as long as you don't try to make any sense out of it. The Doors, by comparison, is just shit, from both historical and entertainment viewpoints. His slide down continued from there.....

Not to say other Stone flicks since aren't entertaining...Nixon's Anthony Hopkins gives me giggle fits whenever I see a clip from that monstrosity.

maybe not 100% historically accurate, but a great film nonetheless

Malcolms spot on with all of this - sums up my feelings of the world cup thus far (and I've got the Germans in the work sweepstake, so potentially happy days!!)

Much better films are firebase gloria or hamburger hill, but the Vietnam War lasted a long, long time, went through different phases starting with the French and their incredible mismangement of the conflict and our own bizarre handling of both the strategic and tactical situation.

For a down to earth take on WWII read Bill Mauldin. For a look at the details of specific european engagements read Cornelius Ryan. My Dad and Uncles slogged through both europe and the pacific, two of them didn't make it home. Europe, according to them, was made up mostly of mud, more mud, frozen mud, and spring thaw mud.

Vietnam was my cousins war, they were pretty big guys even for marines and most of them ended up in the military police, but what they all said was Vietnam was a different war depending on when you were there and what unit you were with, even for combat troops.

Oliver Stone is an idiot, but how many hollywood actors, directors or producers aren't idiots. JFK was at least a fun movie to watch if you didn't take it seriously (and I liked the Doors).

My dad and uncles described Europe as dismal, frigid, muddy and punctuated by cities that'd been pulverized to gravel by Allied bombers. And that made for a hornet's nest of German snipers.
