I miss the old U.S. version of the Mars bar.  It was so much better than the Snickers Almond.  They got nothin' on the Zero bar though.  :)

My wife and are are about 50/50 on going next year. That's better than the odds since the last time we attended (2008).  I'll probably haul a ton of Judges Guild stuff for the Auction store so we'll drive again.  Depends on how things go the rest of this year....don't have too much fun this year, guys!

If anyone in the states remembers the old Marathon bar (chocolate covered caramel in a drizzled twist), the closest you can get today is the Cadbury Curly Wurly...might save on shipping costs ;-)

We found some in a local market that has an England section (Jungle Jims market in the Cincinnati area ) and stocked up.

The old Marathon bar in the UK was a Snickers.
Wasn't the US Marathon bar, just a Chomp that had been run over by a steam roller?


This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

assuming its the same thing, theyre called Snickers now.

At least, we had a chocolate bar like that, but with peanuts in it, that was rebranded to Snickers.

I think you Brits are getting them confused.  The original Marathon bar was a twisted rope of hard, chewy caramel with a coating of chocolate.  Now they are called Curly Wurly.

and has been around since before I was born.

I dont think we have the high energy things.

Curly Wurlys appeared in the 1970s or so.

Possibly why they decided to rebrand the Marathon tho.

Damn confusing candy makers.  So Mars sold the Marathon in the U.S. during the 70's and 80's.  Cadbury sells the exact same thing as the Curly Wurly in the U.K.  And Snickers in the U.S. was called a Marathon in the U.K.?  But nowadays its Snickers?

.....and they definitely all used to be bigger! (I think Marathon became snickers to bring the UK in line with the rest of mainland Europe - something we seem to traditionally rebel against!)

Highly recommend the non-fiction book "Candy Freak"  A guy who has loved candy obsessively his entire life goes on a tour of the US finding old candy makers of classic candy that is now hard to find.  Also explains how the big makers bought up all the local guys and now just have a handful of candies/chocolate bars they produce and spiked the rest.  Good stuff.
