Hey everyone,

Maybe I'm too recent of a member to count for this.
But I'd love to see a Denis Beauvais piece of art.

His chess pieces are great but the one I really loved the most was Bridge of Sorrows from the cover of Dragon #92. :)

Also, would Greg Hildebrandt be considered shooting for the moon?
As in Mission Impossible?

Best regards,
Ronald

I think we should keep it realistic. Den B, Brom, Willingham, Caldwell, Elmore, Truman, and Hildebrandt are going to be far too expensive and they only have tangential connections to the hobby at this point.

Rather than shoot for the moon guys I think we should make this is easy and painless as possible by going with someone with connections to the hobby that is affordable and approachable by the average fan.

One thing in the favor of guys like Easley and Holloway is that we have connections via Acaeum members and both are still producing art in the hobby.  Guys like Roslof and Jeff Dee are very much approachable and still in the ballpark.

I know this might be controversial to say, but I don't want to just get a "hired gun" in here that sees an Acaeum commission as a way to get a big check and then churn something out when their heart really isn't into "that kind of art" anymore.  I'd rather have someone that respects the hobby, still is in touch with their roots, and will be reasonable about the price and the direction from whatever committee is assembled to put this together.  Just my two cents worth.

Depends on the artist, but if we stick with BadMike's suggestions I'm likely to be interested!

I'll go again. Add me to the list.

I have no issue with the price. I thing I got great value for money.

I think the quantity should be kept below 100 units. I also think we should prioritise community members over bandwagon jumpers. Some people like have contributed greatly over the years but their lives are such that they don't get to visit us too often (bclarkie, johnhuck, killjoy32 to name but a few) We know who they are, and they deserve an opportunity over non-contributors and new members who sign up just to buy a print.

I'd like to see something detailed and nuts by Tom Wham.

mbassoc2003,

I would like to see this project treated as a brand. As such, we should be thinking about building the brand. I do not want to limit the number of prints to some decided upon number. However, I do agree with you about long-standing members getting prints. I propose the the committee decide that the first "50" or so prints be reserved for long-standing members (however defined) and then those that are brand new or who just signed up for the print can have a later numbered print. That way those willing to pay can get a print. This builds the brand and hopefully later down the "street" so to speak maybe we will have to artist's knocking at our door rather than us knocking at their door.

E.O. has more of a "connection" than those guys? Price is an issue but you payed top dollar already for # 1 so I don't think it could get much worse Mike... Some of those guys above have hugely influenced the hobby to the point of changing the entire look of things. For sure Brom and Hildebrandt.
Broms latest work is his best and he hasn't deviated from his dark fantastic path imo. Hildebrandt is doing lots of pin-ups lately. You want to go with Easley or Holloway but saying that Brom, Caldwell etc aren't in the genre anymore is ridiculous. Priced too high but then again you payed E.O. VERY well so why is price an issue? D&D has a great legacy and a wide range of art defines the hobby over the years and I think you're being a bit narrow minded with your last post. Just my 02c, nothing personal;)

That link was...um...interesting...

But it doesn't explain your beef with Pipsqueak at all. Why don't you either let the cat out of the bag or clam up?

EDIT: Oh, BTW, I'd be in on the art print thing, depending on the artist (Roslof sounds good).

Most of the guys I mentioned are still working in the hobby (Holloway, Easley, Roslof, Dee, Otus, etc) while the other guys are not. They are still doing gaming related stuff (Goodman Games, etc) while the others are not.  Willingham and Truman have been in comics the last 30 years, the others are making huge bucks doing book covers and such. Hildebrant has zero connection to D&D.  Den's main claim to fame is doing great Dragon covers, nothing in the mainstream hobby. Caldwell and Elmore and Brom are charging big bucks for their works, I don't know how much you think we paid Erol but it was nothing near what one of those guys would charge. My numbers might be off but if we got a Brom I'm thinking we'd need 100 sponsers at about $150 each to pay for the print, printing, shipping, etc.

Obviously this is just my opinion but I'd like someone sporting the "Acaeum" brand to have a connection to Dungeons & Dragons specifically and not just the hobby in general.

Honestly my choice would be to get a more "modern" artist like a Peter Mullins because I think a lot of those guys are more into the scene nowadays, but I completely understand the nostalgia thing and getting some of the old guard because these guys won't be around forever.

Since the EO Project is wrapping up and the Acaeum members are clamoring for the next project, print or otherwise, what will be the method used to select the next project?  More specifically:

Should the EO Committee continue forward as the Acaeum Art/Print Committee?
(I think the current members have proven themselves more than capable with the EO Project and have the necessary skills to execute another commission of this nature.  Well done gentlemen.)

Do the existing EO Committee members wish to continue serving on the Acaeum Art/Print Committee?
(I believe they all do, but they should speak for themselves before they find themselves volunteered.:))

Should the AAP Committee be opened up to new membership?
(I would think not unless one or more of the members opt not to participate.  Further, too many members could impede project progress and decision making.)

Who should decide the artist and/or art content for the next project?
(Rather than everyone posting their artist selections in various threads, let the committee solicit input from the members at large and decide on which artists may be practical.  Perhaps a focused poll of the membership at large once a period of input has been applied would be a useful method.)

Who should be eligible for a print?
(I think the committee should decide on a reasonable criteria to prevent one post wonders from jumping in and long time members from being excluded.)

How many prints should be generated?
(This was a challenging issue with the last project as several members dropped out and made calculating print runs and overall costs difficult.)

What should be the price point per print?
(Well the quality of the EO print was outstanding and I believe the committee has a good feel for what it costs to achieve this print quality.  Mike has a very good estimate of shipping and so with artist commission and miscellaneous expenses such as Paypal fees, it should be relatively  straightforward to calculate what a future print will cost based on number of prints.)

Should other committees be formed to pursue Acaeum, non-art projects such as games, modules, clothing, etc.?
(Sure. :) Others on the boards have expressed interest in such and have experience producing and/or publishing.  Someone should step forward and run with it.)

I know we are all excited about the next project and there are literally dozens of other questions yet to be answered or addressed, but we first need to see if the existing committee wishes to move forward.

My two cents. :)

The Alabama man asks good questions, and the "clamoring" leads me to take some personal, not completely official, responses.  The EO Committee has begun preliminary discussions on some of these matters, and as I stated in the EO thread, we want to finish up the first project before launching the next.  I stated that mid-October is our likely start date.  I know many of you are excited, so here are some likely responses to smarmy1's inquiries.

If the Acaeum community will have us, we'll likely have another go at it.

smarmy1 wrote:Do the existing EO Committee members wish to continue serving on the Acaeum Art/Print Committee?

We are all willing to lead another project at this point.

smarmy1 wrote:Should the AAP Committee be opened up to new membership?

The committee size and make-up worked well together.

smarmy1 wrote:Who should decide the artist and/or art content for the next project?

Input from the Acaeum community is important to me and was important to the committee on our last project.  What basically happened last time is that we heard lots of input on the thread, and once we felt like we had enough information, we proceeded as a committee until we needed additional information or feedback.

smarmy1 wrote:Who should be eligible for a print?

The system we used last time worked well enough, and future systems will likely be close to the previous model.

smarmy1 wrote:How many prints should be generated?

One of our concerns last time was having a large enough print run to reduce the cost of the print so most people could afford it.  Also, one of my passions was to at least get the project completed, unlike some other web-community projects which took forever or were never completed.

If we make the prints too limited, they become too expensive for some Acaeum members.  Likewise, if we make the prints too easy to get, they lose the Acaeum aura and appeal.  I don't anticipate the requirements becoming less restrictive.  If anything, they'll become more restrictive.

smarmy1 wrote:What should be the price point per print?

We originally sought to make the price point $50 to $75.00 for the EO LE print, and we missed that mark significantly.  Now that we have a better feel for what things actually cost, I think less than $100.00 is realistic and a similar cost to the last project is likely.

smarmy1 wrote:Should other committees be formed to pursue Acaeum, non-art projects such as games, modules, clothing, etc.?

I think the LE Art Committee, or whatever we're called, has our hands full for now, and other people are welcome to do whatever other projects they want.   8)

I'd have no problem paying $150 for a Brom original. Of course, I couldn't if there is no option.

And, I dunno if Elmore is not into the hobby anymore. Maybe its because he goes around to conventions and sells his own prints? I've seen him at Con-on-the-Cob (last year where I bought like 8 things) and he was just at TrollCon. He might not be doing covers and interiors and the like, but he's still around, and very easy to talk to.

The EO committee did a miraculous job.

They have formed the nucleous of an organized Acaeum which is very handy for getting things done. But it is just a private organization of individuals who can make whatever descisions they like, choose the artist they want, set prices, etc... with or without the input from anyone else.

As BJ says it is up to anyone here to start other projects. I'm not sure if the EO committee wants to be part of alternate projects or even further art projects. It all depends on their desire or availability, but it certainly shouldn't stop anyone else from starting another art project with or without their assistance, or a completely different kind of project (which is what I'm personally interested in pursuing, and which will be an entirely different thread).

And nothing should stop any of us from talking about ideas and possibilities.

I think the problem Serl is getting 74 OTHER people to also pay $150 for a Brom. We had people dropping out this year because of financial difficulties with half that, and only had 65 copies made. Then are the guys paying for the Brom Acaeum members or just guys with deep pockets that can afford it?

It's fun to speculate and all but you have to keep it real also.
