It does strike me that PHB2 & PHB3 are further attempts at milking the cow, harking back to the old days with books released for cash where perhaps it could have been included early on??

As an early teen BITD, I bought MMII, DSG & WSG (avoided UA until very recently and its purely for my collection now) as soon as they came out, as they were new books and I 'needed' them. IF I were still playing, perhaps I'd be doing the same now on 4th ed and having a feeling of buying material for the sake of it, rather than its quality...

I was more keep with 3.x and not get anything 4e until deals started to happen.  Core books @ $10 each, FreeRPG Day freebies, the 4e DCC sale.  Heck even listened to the WotC podcasts and others of people playing it, while funny to listen to, hasn't convinced me to want to play it.  I've not talked to some people who were WotC devotees in over a year, but am curious if they stayed with 4e or not.

With Pathfinder I was a Dungeon magazine subscriber that got the free Pathfinders initially and that first one was what got me to want to stay with Paizo's products.  Playing a lot of 3.x through the years I think Pathfinder improves on the game, so if you were fine with 3.x you'd find it an easy and enjoyable switch.

Confusion settles in. I'd expect a flurry of buys by idiots who don't realize they're not buying 4th edition crap. Oh, and way to go Hasbro. Recycle everything. Only way to make money is by saving it.

Okay, that's disappointing.  

I was just hoping for a simpler set of rules that covered all levels, not the 1-3 stuff like the old basic set.

C&C is looking more and more likely for what I need.

I agree, but I think that's what appeals to me.  There was too much structure in AD&D.

Of course, back in those days, I had to use the 1E books if I wanted to have any players ... I've never known anyone who actually played the basic/expert/comp sets for any length of time ... but I would've had the players agreed to it ... my campaigns and modules were OD&D in flavor ... and I used those as resources quite often.

There was a small bookstore across the street from my high school that had an entire spinner rack of (A)D&D stuff. Dad would give me $1 to buy my lunch every day in the cafeteria. I pocketed that money, along with my yard mowing and car washing money and made an after school trip to that store at least once a week to purchase those treasures. Ah, the memories...
