Well done to Spain 1 - 0 over Germany.

I had Holland to win, but delighted to to see the Spanish with the Cup  :D  :D

Shane....you misunderstand me.  I am aware that they are working on Diablo 3.  Apparently they have been working on Diablo 3 for nearly six years!  Starcraft 2 has been in development even longer.  And Duke Nukem Forever?  Well...you get my point.

Gamers shouldnt have to wait this damn long for a sequel.

Although, that is one sweet game trailer.  :D

Switching over from the dying gasps of that other thread ... is the new Indy really not good?

I've been avoiding internet reviews/spoilers, etc., so I honestly haven't heard much.

Some of my friends liked it.  I didn't.  Sparing spoilers; my main gripes are:

1. the new Indy replacement, Shia Lebouf, can't act.  And even if he could, his character is ludicrous.

2. too little plot, too much action.  I know that one doesn't go to see an Indiana Jones film for an insight into the human condition - but the balance is skewed too far this time.

3. what plot there is, is too obviously signposted, even for a teenage audience

4. the score is waaaay too intrusive. No minor plot development goes without its overly obvious musical underlining

5. what a waste of John Hurt!!

It has its good bits, especially in the early parts, but overall it has been dumbed down, CGI-ed up and the dialogue is laughable.

The new Indy sucked mangy rabid poodle ass.
Do yourself a favor: Rent The Matrix: Revolutions and The Mummy Returns, use a video editor, and randomly mix the two. You'll get the same effect.
It pains me to say it, but Harrison Ford's acting ability is BELOW Keanu Reeves'. He should have had a stunt double for the speaking parts. The worst part is, it will forever stain the glowing memories everyone had of the Indy trilogy. Well, Temple of Doom was bad, but the chick had a smoking body, which made up for some of the deficiency.
I wailed and tore out my hair afterwards, for I lost two hours of my life that can never be recalimed. I should have taken out $8, stuffed it in a Mason jar and pissed on it, then buried it in a lime pit.

Like one online review I read, the guy titled his review

"wished for the sweet relief of death.."

I pray to God every day that you never get paid to do movie reviews in my lifetime Frank.

It wasn't that bad....suffice to say it was my least favorite Indy movie of the four.  The plot was laughable although the first twenty minutes was a lot of fun.  And even though it was beyond ridiculous the "refrigerator" scene at the Nevada Test Site was hilarious.  Bringing Karen Allen back was, in my opinion, a mistake.  She has not aged well at all.  And although Shia Leboeuf is not the heir apparent to Tom Hanks, it could have been much worse....how about Hayden Christensen?  And although Harrison's career isnt what it used to be, to say that he is worse off as an actor as Keanu Reeves....well honestly Frank, lay off the pipe man.     Way too much cheesy CGI, especially the big, freakin' ants.  Very similar to a scene with scarab beetles in The Mummy, just like Frank said.

Two stars out of five for me.  Iron Man kicked its ass....I hear The Incredible Hulk is actually really good too....will probably see it next weekend.

Duke, was George "Metachlorians" Lucas anywhere in the same city when it was written/filmed? That should answer your question.

The man should retire, or do cartoons, or something.  He just doesn't need to have anymore hands in any classic adventure series. He lost his touch, if he ever really had it.

Impossible to "spoil" this movie.

Not one unexpected plot development after the first two sequences.

Everything stupid you could think of to put in a movie.

One word shall suffice:  Roswell.

Which is OK...because M. Night Shyamalyan managed to stink up his movie even worse.

Only advice I have for The Happening....not even worth 99 cents.

Not even worth your time to watch it.

Not one scene involving any sort of suspense.

Not one character I cared about even a little.

Nothing to be interested in.  Literally, a complete waste of time.

Stupid idea.

Stupid performances.

Just plain bad.  Really, really bad.

Teams of Chinese scientists are currently working on words contemptuous enough to describe this movie.

Got it?

After an all day "BattleGrounds: Crossbows & Catapults" marathon between myself, my wife, my 8 year old daughter and my 3 year old son, I figured I would let you guys know that Toys R Us (my local one and they said it was store wide) has the new release of the Crossbows & Catapults game on sale/clearance now along with all the expansions. They had an additional 20% off clearance items sale going on as well and I had a $10 off $50 or more coupon they they sent to my email (if anyone wants it, PM and I'll send the link). I paid the following:

War Chest (main game) clearance priced at 19.98 - 4.00 (20% off) - 2.76 (10 off 50 coupon) = 13.22

Tower Attack (expansion) clearance priced at 10.98 - 2.20 (20% off) - 1.51 (10 off 50 coupon) = 7.27

Attack Pack (expansion) clearance priced at 5.98 - 1.20 (20% off) - 0.82 (10 off 50 coupon) = 3.96

Attack Pack (expansion) clearance priced at 5.98 - 1.20 (20% off) - 0.82 (10 off 50 coupon) = 3.96

Attack Pack (expansion) clearance priced at 5.98 - 1.20 (20% off) - 0.82 (10 off 50 coupon) = 3.96

For a grand total of 32.37 for the entire game including all expansions. Good prices if you want to buy to resell or great prices if you want to buy to play and enjoy. I originally told the wife it would be good for teaching our daughter about angles and acceleration, yada yada   , but next thing I know she's on the floor kicking my ass using the orc's triple catapult.  8O

I remember playing the original version back in the early 80's and it seems like the new version is just as fun with my daughter and son today. Ofcourse with him being 3, he just likes the destruction (hmmm...similar to his dad), but we all had a good time playing it. Good family fun.

A friend who watches a LOT of movies, much more than I do, told me with all sincerity "Mike, directors don't recover from movies that reach this level of badness."  Looks like Shamalama Ding Dong finally punched his ticket out of Hollywood.  The funniest quote I heard, if you watch all his movies from lastest to first, basically in reverse order, (The Happening to Sixth Sense) you see the slow but sure development of a talented director....taken in the correct order, you see a one-shot wonder sadly declining in every aspect of his craft.

Mike B.

PS Update:  I just went to a few movie sites, Shamalama Ding Dong's supporters (and oddly enough, Nighty Night himself) are defending the B-movie badness of the movie by saying it was INTENDED  to be bad. I kid you not.  Because, you know, every film auteur is just dying to make a crap fest of a movie.... Go to IMDB or a similar site, it's quite ridiculous....

I may be unique in this, but I actually preferred Unbreakable to The Sixth Sense.  I thought Shyamalyan's take on the old superhero mythology was interesting.  (Although having unintentionally read a spoiler before seeing The Sixth Sense may have killed too much of the impact of the movie for me.)

None of his movies after the first two seemed to be much more than gimmicks in search of a plot.  Sometimes, the worst thing that can happen to an artist is being pegged as a genius.  They spend the rest of their lives trying to prove they were worth the press.

Signs was a good movie.

Aside from the only farmer in America who does not own a shotgun, and somehow missing the very basic idea of turning on all the sprinklers in the front yard (a corn farm has got to have a lot of sprinklers), it was mostly not too illogical.  (Other than being totally illogical, like all movies.)

Signs was easily worth 99 cents.

I also enjoyed Unbreakable more. We are both in the minority.  I thought Sixth Sense was a one trick pony, and it was a great trick, but since I guessed it halfway through I wasn't as taken with the movie as many were.

The problem with being Writer, Director and Producer of your own movies:  There is no one else to tell you "Shama, this BLOWS.  Go re-watch Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, and remember what brought you here."

out of all them films mentioned, signs was about the only film i would go out of my way to watch again. i actually did like that. i thought there was some good, decent acting in that, at least. it kept me interested, which is good.

as for the indy film, as i said, the only reason i went to see it, was to take my mum and daughter - mum is pretty ill with many diff problems and so cant make it to cinema herself and loves the indy films. her and daughter thought the film was great - i just said meh.

i liked a few things in it, but essentially just thought it was a nice little earner for all involved, cos folk would STILL see the film.

the happening, i really was most disappointed. i kinda knew it was going to suck. we got to the cinema on the offchance a film would be starting-ish when we got there (not planned). that was the only one on unless we wanted to wait 90 mins (which we didnt), otherwise i wouldnt have watched it either. i really wish i had just gone and rented a DVD out instead.

so we got back home and sat and watched the quiet man, to cheer us up again :)

Al

Same here.  Unbreakable is a good film, it builds suspense well and has some great imaginative turns. But I will never know if I would have preferred  Sixth Sense - because it was spoiler city over here.  You couldn't move without people blabbing.

I would agree. I preferred Unbreakable to Sixth Sense or Signs. I actually liked The Village although many did not like it and it was critically panned. I would like to go and see The Happening. I have heard all about it - with most people saying it is a let down - but I am curious to see if he is making a point that many may have missed.

Yesterday, I took my kids to the movies. I suggested Get Smart, but they outvoted me and we saw Kung Fu Panda.
