Wow, it actually sold for $1,750.  That blows away any previous copy, SW or not.

I wonder if it was bought by a collector on this board, or if it was bought by an investor(s).

This is going to be a hard one to find in NM condition....black cover is hard to find without color breaks, spine creases because the contents are packed, and it's a first print. Early D&D adventures are going to be really hard to find in NM shape.

I stumbled across this video, this morning.  Not sure if there is any meat behind the issue or if it's just a customer venting...

Here are some links to more videos. I am personally on the fence about grading. Now that the Heritage auction has ended and there are auction sale prices to go off of I am sure the prices of grading just went up.

Available now from Die Cast Games: Night of the Black Swords by Allen Hammack (Author of C2-The Ghost Tower of Inverness) with artwork by Jeff Easley and Diesel.

Being on the fence makes sense. Vintage DnD collecting may largely diminish with our generation. Condition will always matter, but possibly not to the extent of separating a 7.5 and 9.8.

However, the youtuber at the top of the link isnt someone I would follow, or pay attention to, when it came to comics. He sounds like many of the youtubers who started in 2020, "stonking" all the collectables. Complaining about not being able to flip, how prices are down, how raw comics are easier to sell now than graded etc. The story he read isnt even believable. We all know 2020 sent everything crazy (save for vintage DnD :) ) Many who started collecting comics are no longer engaged. Folks who have collected comics for a long time are now more into buying raw comics. There is a ton of this in Pokemon btw, its like a whole sub-hobby. Anecdotally, I also know some folks that feel uncertain about the economy + other stuff. So, yea, slabbing-to-sell doesnt make sense right now. Slabbing because you want to preserve and display a 40 year old item in great condition makes sense, especially if you like grades. :)

The warping inner well is crazy though. I have never seen that.

I've had about 50 books slabbed by CBCS, none of the issues noted in this video or others. Not a big fan of CGC due to a snafu I had with them the one and only time I used the service (for a comic). The customer service I've had so far with my RPG submissions has been phenomenal. Had a long discussion over why they couldn't slab a 10th anniversary edition (couldn't see the back of the item because of two modules being back to back, which I respect), and although I didn't totally agree, they were being true to their philosophy.

Phil,

Hi, I was wondering how CGC grades a Module with a seperate map that is slightly larger.... For instance the Demons of Dundurn the book is 8 and 7/16ths and the map is 8 3/4s.... Would you place the map behind the book?  Should I include the map?  or would CGC not grade it?  Forgive me if this topic has been discussed before.

Please Advise. TY.

Best, Disco

Was the module sealed? If so, was the map inside or outside the book? Usually contents are put inside, and sometimes will stick out slightly on the side. As long as it doesn't look like any damage will occur, we usually do it this way.

I wanted to give a slight update since it's been a while since I've written.

We've been getting some pieces in, but not as much as I thought. I did want to give more info of artists. I see "D" signed on many pieces, but I do not know who this is. Also, there are more initials in other modules, I think "DSD" or something like that. Can't remember off the top of my head. Early D&D modules usually do not credit artists. So if anyone can help fill in gaps, let me know. I'd like to add these artists to the credits.

In order for something to be considered sealed, the contents must not be accessible. So even if there is splitting, as long as the module or anything inside cannot be removed, then it will be considered sealed. Anything sent in with compromised shrinkwrap will be graded loose.

I saw that the Heritage auctions were a bit mixed. Some pieces went really high into the $1000s, while other pieces barely broke $50.

Any idea Phil on when or if Heritage will be doing another D&D specific auction of items?

Thanks,

Richard

Things seem to sell a good bit slower now than last year. I only stated selling last year, so that may be a false signal. Bad Mike may have a better idea.

Election year. Been through a lot of them in 30 years, just can say that things will slowly get back to normal after November 5th (no matter who wins). People tend to hold on to their money until things are more settled. That's my non-political opinion based on decades of seeing this in election years.

Looks like it's been moved to January 16th. Good time of year for an auction, I plan to put some items in there; comics.ha.com/c/search/results.zx?dept= ... name=40286

Hi, The item is not sealed. When I put the map into the centerfold of the book it sticks out about 3/8 of an inch. Which which is kind of the reason why I asked. There is artwork on the back of the book which would be blocked if the map was on the back, but if it’s in the centerfold, it really sticks out pretty far. Anyway, I’m debating sending in for this reason. Thank you best regards, Tom.

The D (usually with a dot before and after it) is Jeff Dee.

The "DSD" is probably David Sutherland but I'd have to see the piece in question to be sure.
