frontloading HP? what is that?

is that just you get max hitpoints on level 1?

sod that! :)

i once had a guy roll up a fighter and then roll his HPs...he only had 14 CON, and then rolled a 3 :)

the combats were a barrel of fun let me tell you. that said, due to the HP impairment, his legendary comment was "i feel like a feckin magic user", but i used to give him XP bonuses for the amazing things he used to come up with come combat situations. superb fun!

Zen offered to answer questions.
I had some questions, so I asked HIM.
He didnt write, if you have question go to Google.
Perhaps you missed that while you were trying to be so helpful yourself.

Sounds good, Zenfinite.

One of my players has the rules pdf files...since those are included with the books they got leaked way ahead of time....

He complains about some of the new rules, but his complaints boil down to essentially one complaint:  It is new.

Aside from the obvious nods to today's video game player needs, everything I hear about 4th edition is good.

No surprise that your FLGS thinks sales of 4th edition are slow...he's being undercut online and everything a player wants is available at Barnes and Noble...for which everyone one on the West Coast has a gift card or two lying about.  (That is what I used, by the way.)

With "straight" bookstores selling gaming products, the FLGS is just screwed.  Add in online sales and the FLGS is better off sticking with miniatures.

Deadlord39 wrote:"Marking" an opponent in battle isn't really roleplaying. Talking a crowd out of crucifying an aaracockra (name that module!), investigating  mysterious disappearances, researching lore about an old castle, things like that constitute roleplaying. Just because a player has his character say "Booyah!" whenever he defeats an opponent doesn't make him a roleplayer.
As far as balance: Played properly a 1st level mage is just as useful as a 1st level fighter. In fact, under my 6 second rule, the MAGE is usually the one directing the battle if necessary. He is typically the one with the best view of any melee involving several creatures, and therefore can keep the party informed of events WHILE he casts spells, hurls missiles, etc. It sounds like you mean "immediately making kills" when you say "doing cool stuff". I know 3E is largely focused on kills, so I would be very surprised if 4E is not.
The fact remains that today's younger generation is less intelligent, more visually oriented, and more based on instant gratification. There's a reason Playstations and other game consoles sell so well.

UK7 Dark Clouds Gather....a classic!!!

All 4E has done has basically adapted video/computer style gaming to the tabletop. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with that in itself, sounds like something fun to play when you have some time to kill. I'm just never going to be sold on the fact it's "D&D", instead of something called "Mini Wars" that uses a system remarkably similar to the game I still play.  Not interested in playing it myself, but if the kids like it, go for it.  Maybe one or two of the exceptionally intelligent will begin researching the roots of the game and stumble across earlier editions, and join our little club.  We can only hope.

What WOTC finally needs to do, however, is sell the 1/2E system to a company that will put out scenarios, supplements and rules additons of interest to the old school gamer; or, allow that ruleset to be used by anyone who wants to write an adventure using those rules without any sort of repercussions.   Stop pretending it's the same game, it hasn't been for 8 years, that way we can have our goodies and the kidz can have theirs.  That's what needs to be done.

Yup, but it wont happen.
It's nice to hope/dream that it could though.

think you're on to something there.

this system is basically minis meets WOW. if you like minis and/or WOW then go buy the books. just keep in mind it isn't D&D and they really need to take that name off of the books.

the deal breaker for me is healing surges. wtf is that. someone please explain to me why a fighter can arbitrarily heal a quarter of his hit points up to ten times a day. i think after ten he can still get more, he just has to deposit a quarter.

the raping of the greyhawk gods truly angered me, but then i looked at it another way.

now i know it isn't D&D. it isn't even greyhawk.

so for those who enjoy minis and WOW, enjoy - it looks to be a solid system for you.

this is of course disregarding the firebreathing dragonborne which i cannot acknowledge as a serious race in any game world or the truly ridiculous 'action points'. for those not in the know, action points are the only viable explanation as to why Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock didn't drive the bus off that bridge in Speed.

yes i apologize for having seen and referenced Speed.

I don't quite follow you here...  They've never said that the default setting is Greyhawk; in fact, they've quite explicitly said that it isn't Greyhawk.

yes, but they kept pelor and one or two others.

but either way i am delighted (except for pelor and the other) since nothing ties this mini/WOW system with the D&D i love.

Well obviously I wasnt trying to be helpful....where is the fun in that?  But since you asked and still havent gotten an answer from anyone else.

Eladrin - In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, eladrins are a type of celestial of chaotic good alignment and hail from the plane of Arborea.

Tiefling - Tieflings are a fictional race in the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy tabletop role-playing game. Tieflings were originally introduced as humans with demonic ancestry.

Dragonborn - Dragonborn are a core race in Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition. They are decedents of a once great empire which long ago collapsed. They now exist in a few, small clans which work as mercenaries, soldiers, and adventurers. Dragonborn society places honor above all else.

Warlock - Warlocks are users of spell-like abilities either in-born or granted through a pact with some unearthly being such as a demon or a fey. Since a warlock's invocations are not normal spells, they may be used while wearing light armor and any number of times. Warlocks can later acquire energy resistance, toughened skin, fast healing, and the ability to force magical items to do their bidding.

Much information on the Warlord class:

Eldarins are no longer celestials.  I don't know what they are now though -- a type of elf, maybe?

Then I want to be a tiefling/dragonborn warlock. That way I can make a pact with myself, and immolate myself if I renege on my pact to myself.
Either that, or I want a red dragon/purple worm/green slime, 5/6/6, necromancer/holy warrior/arcane archer. THAT is what rocks about 3/4E. Anything is possible, no matter how idiotic.

I don't see why a warlock would ever be in an adventuring party.  Sounds like an interesting one-off NPC, but guys that can do it all shouldn't feel the need to travel in groups.

Actually, that's one of the big difference between 3e and 4e. Exactly what you listed is the big reason I hated 3e with a passion. 3e people are complaining about how to become multi-classed you have to give up something. 8O
