Frank's game.  Have you ever seen a party look more doomed?

I took a lot more pictures, but this gives a good taste of the Con.  If you haven't been, you've got to go next year.  Registration is open!  What're you waiting for?

Hey Bracton,

Thank you for the pictures. :)

Wow, I'm not sure what was happening at that point in Frank's game but whatever it was it couldn't have been good for the players. :)

Best regards,
Ronald

Phaedran wrote:Nice recap of your con weekend. What books/products were you selling at the con? Are they available online somewhere?

Thanks David :D  We had these BBP print products available at the con:

  • OSRIC (new printing from March, with many pieces of new art, Jason Zavoda's new index, all the current errata, etc.)
  • Monsters of Myth (this is the same printing that you get from Lulu.com)
  • DCC 7 - Secret of Smuggler's Cove (1e version with double cover)
  • Swords & Wizardry Reference Sheets
  • 11x17 hex pad (smaller hexes inside larger campaign hexes)
  • 11x17 graph pad (6 squares/inch; FWIW, 6 spi is the graph paper size Gary recommends in OD&D)
  • 8.5x11 graph pad (6 spi)

You can buy them from the BBP store @ http://black-blade-publishing.com/Store.aspx although we don't have the paper pads available, since they're somewhat non-standard size means higher shipping costs.  That said, if you wanted to order some, the 11x17 pads are $10, and the 8.5x11 are $5 (plus shipping).

Phaedran wrote:With so many members offering products these days I'm having trouble keeping track of who is with what company sometimes. I know you have your hand in a few different arenas so I just want to make sure I'm up to date.

Thanks, I appreciate the interest.

Phaedran wrote:Also, do you have any idea of what the next offering from RJK will be and when?

If everything goes according to plan, it'll be his Castle Greyhawk "Machine Level", but we don't have a release date for it yet.  Rob remains committed to the project, but he hasn't been able to work on much since the fall.  We'll keep everyone posted as things proceed.

Thanks for sharing the shots, Mark :D

Do you mind if I post this one to my Facebook NTX coventions pics?---I haven't seen too many shots of the first descent into the BR   I'll credit you, of course, if you're willing?

Please do.  I've got a few other pictures of the game, so let me know if you want me to send those to you too.

Of course, someone else will have to tell me about the pictures on Facebook.  I still refuse to join . . . I already spend too much time online as it is.

Yeah, I hear you there :D  But, I don't play any of the games on FB, which I'm sure helps to cut down on the idle time spent there (that's what the flash Aliens game is for! ).

Lol.

Great to see photos. Looks like a fine weekend.

Given the self censorship on the other thread, is it wise to keep the photo of the goods WoTC have refused to allow to be printed, along with Insidious which WoTC have already issued a Cease and Desist notice on, being on display at the con' in a TSR sales rack?

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

ExTSR wrote:And stay OldSchool... but consider this radical notion: NewSchool rules sets can sometimes be played in OldSchool style. So think about Pathfinder.

Been there, done that.  Left it behind.

I got on the 3e/d20 bandwagon when it came through town, and I ran it with "old school feel."  For example, I ran a lot of 3e with modules from Necromancer Games ("1e feel/3e rules").  I had some fun with it, and it worked okay at lower levels, but as the levels climbed, things started getting out of hand and not feeling right.  By the time 3.5 came around, I was already dissatisfied and looking elsewhere.

I ended up going with Castles & Crusades, because it was in-print and seemed to offer exactly what I wanted.  It seemed a lot like AD&D.  I could use all my D&D and AD&D stuff with it without breaking a sweat.  Et cetera.  At first, it just felt right.  After a while, though, I found more and more things that didn't work like I wanted.  I found myself house-ruling these others systems to be more like TSR-era D&D.  Eventually, even I realized that was just silly.

The fact was, I had an "old school D&D" itch that I wanted to scratch.  And if you have that particular itch, the absolute best way to scratch it is to play the real deal.  Period.  And if you can't play/run the real deal, then the next best thing is a very close clone (e.g. OSRIC for AD&D).

Yeah, you can play Pathfinder with an "old school" style.  You can play *anything* with an old school style.  You can play Dogs in the Vineyard or Exalted with an old school style if it floats your boat.  And don't get me wrong, I think some of those other systems are fine, well designed games.  Some of them are even fun games, in their own right.  But system matters.  It affects the way the game plays and the way the games feels.  (And sometimes those effects aren't obvious, at first, but after playing the game for a while, they start becoming more and more apparent.)

Bottom line for me: if I want "old school D&D," well, then I'll play "old school" D&D.  No need for any half-measures or substitutes.

That's actually in "reverse" order since it lists the post from newest to oldest :)

And this is for 2012, should be in the other thread !

My experience is a dead-on match with philotomy, except I didn't even bother trying to run C&C, as I could tell it wasn't what I wanted from reading it, and I was using homebrew stuff for my 3e "run old-school style" attempts.

But the conclusion is the same: system matters.  Old-school D&D is best played with OD&D or 1e AD&D, followed buy the close clones (S&W, LL, OSRIC).  3e and PF can be fun too, but it is a whole different experience than pre-2e AD&D (or straight MM/PHB/DMG-based 2e for that matter).

Frank and Tim, I can understand wanting to support as broad a range of systems as possible to appeal to as broad of a marketplace as possible.  It will be interesting to see if you need to make concessions during design to make the adventures palatable to multiple systems.  It will also be interesting to see what the end result is from the players of different systems.  I imagine what may be an adventure suitable for 4th-5th level OSRIC/AD&D characters may end being suitable for a different range of levels in Pathfinder, for example, due to the general differences in the powercurve of the two systems.  As always, good luck.

Not at all. Just thought it pudent to protect in advance if the tide turns, is all. No animosity or ill intent.

More importantly, what is Chex Mix?

Hmm, yeah, I think that would be a lot of work to get right.  It's not so much the stats themselves as it is the different expectations of the target markets on good adventure design.  I'm thinking of stuff like balance between exploration vs. combat, etc.  On the stat side, d20/Pathfinder fans tend to be very focused on and aware of the stat-blocks and the encounter balance.  If you do hit the sweet spot, though, that could be a big coup.

Green Ronin is doing something like this with some of their products.  I haven't kept up with it, but I believe the model is to release a core "fluff" product (i.e. stat-less info) with separate stat books for different games.  For example, they released The Pirate's Guide to Freeport as a completely stat-free resource, and then a bunch of "companion" products with stats: True20 Freeport Companion, Castles & Crusades Freeport Companion, Savage Worlds Freeport Companion, Freeport Companion: Pathfinder RPG Edition, et cetera.

Thinking about it, it might be easier to do the multiple-stat approach with a setting, rather than an adventure.  Looking at Green Ronin's catalog, it appears that the Freeport adventures don't follow the same model as the setting sourcebook.  Most of the Freeport adventures target a single game (d20 for the majority, with at least one True20 adventure).  There's one that's dual-stat for d20 and True20, but there's not as much design or scale difference between those, with True20 being closely related to d20.

Given the venue, that must've been Quick Pix of Tex-Mex Chex Mix.

Yeah. Me being silly.  :D
