Really cool read, thank you for posting.  Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlases are true artistry.  Her attention to detail, realism, and  stylistic approach is the stuff of legends.  I wish she was still with us, making more in-depth D&D maps.  She was a great cartographer. RIP.

Looks like Hasbro isn't doing too great, at least in terms of Dungeons & Dragons (I cant imagine why) and ticker price. Rpg revenues down 22 pct q4 year over year, despite new 5.5 core book releases, and revenues 4 pct down year over year (though not specific to Dungeons & Dragons). Interestingly, MTG is flat or negative too, and the only product worth specifying in the financial statement (Dungeons & Dragons listed as "Hasbro other gaming"). It appears Hasbros bottom line is being fueled by licensing. It'll be interesting to see how long that lasts.

Ay. Interesting to reconcile that sentiment with the popular view that rpg collectibles will continue upward trend in short and medium run.

There's a small group of 5E players where I live who have been badgering me to play, but even I have standards. I did listen in while the Dm was explaining a few things to a new player and I was not surprised at the dumbing-down of the game; he even admitted such. I heard him describe a spell the player had that was basically Spiritual Hammer without the component, and he explained how one player made the manifested weapon a huge lollipop and was beating foes with it. I have no interest in seeing the greatest game ever invented turned into a parody.
On top of that, the DM had a SUITCASE of books that weighed more than a cast member of The View. According to him, he needed all of them. I was tempted to weigh in about a game that used to take 2-3 books now taking 30 and how he was carrying the GDP of Sri Lanka around in a suitcase just to play a game based on imagination, but it would have been pointless.
