Ok, apologies in advance if i don't recall where we discussed about the big book on d&d history that was published earlier this year.
I still haven't bought it as my skeptical attitude towards that books hasn't passed away... i found a copy on amazon at a very good price today and i was near to buy it... then i found this review:

For those that have read the book, is the review too nasty?

It's an idiotic review.

The book is a compilation of manuscripts from the history of D&D. What is it supposed to include other than copies of those manuscripts? I suspect this is someone who's real complaint is the paragraph disclaimer in the preface.

All one really needs to know is that the lion's share of the work compiling this book was done by Jon Peterson. It includes copies of documents you will have seen only if you have been shown copies by Jon or Bill Meinhardt. If you want to see copies of the original D&D manuscript, the Twin Cities version, the Mornard fragments, hand-drawn maps of the Great Kingdom, correspondence between Dave and Gary, etc., it's all here.

I bought a copy. I think it's worth it.

I second Bracton's comments. The book is well done and there's a lot of excellent information in it.

The biggest issue with these books, and Amazon, seems to be the terrible shipping practices. This coming from a company that started out selling books!

I purchased a couple of these from them. They both were insufficiently packaged and damaged, so I had to return them and ended up purchasing them elsewhere. This has happened multiple times, so I should have known better. Until they are better with their packaging, I will not buy anything from them that I care about being potentially damaged during shipment.

Up vote. Dont buy collectable books from Amazon. Its about the only thing I dont buy on Amazon.

Bought mine from Amazon and it was just thrown in the box without any packaging at all. The book was not damaged in any way, that may only be because the warehouse is only about 3 miles away.

I echo Bracton's comments about the book as well. Well worth it to see the drafts and correspondence. I got mine from Amazon. It was in a box with minimal packaging but not damaged. I had preordered from my local Barnes and Noble, but it didn't come in. Amazon was a second choice. Still haven't heard from B&N about the first one I ordered.

Anybody else ever use their rootbeer mug to make rings on their character sheets whilst imagining they were from a beer stein? I think I was heavily influenced by that one Jeff Dee art piece~ the one with the fighter drinking on the floor with the tavern wench next to him…you can prob guess why :D

Mine WERE from beer steins. I donated about 1/4 of my liver to our D&D sessions.

Haha I was a little young for drinking at that point…does make me remember when I would watch my brother and his friends play D&D in like 80’. They would takeover the basement pingpong table…sometimes It would smell like Christmas which kinda baffled me because it was the middle of summer :P

I was underage too, I was 14 when I started. Fortunately (?) I was in private school in Vermont and was able to lug a backpack to the liquor store and buy hundreds of fifths of booze. Pretty much paid my tuition. Me and another guy named Colin Barney were the only ones who looked old enough.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.
